Nate Ament: The Coveted Five-Star Recruit and His Potential College Choices

Nate Ament, a highly sought-after five-star college basketball recruit, is poised to make his college commitment, a decision eagerly anticipated by fans and analysts alike. Ament, a 6-foot-9 power forward ranked as the No. 4 national recruit in the 2025 class, had initially aimed to announce his choice during the McDonald’s All-American Game week in New York City. However, he has since decided to postpone his commitment.

A Delayed Decision

Ament was previously targeting this week’s McDonald’s All-American Game in New York City as the event to reveal his college decision. This year’s game will take place Tuesday night at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn. But Ament - who is working with a top-five list of schools that includes Arkansas, Duke, Kentucky, Louisville and Tennessee - said Monday during a McDonald’s All-American Game interview session that he isn’t planning on committing Tuesday. “I’m going to push it back. I’m not going to do it tomorrow, on Tuesday,” Ament said.

Key Factors in Ament's Decision

Several factors will weigh heavily on Ament's ultimate decision. He emphasized the importance of playing for a coach who believes in him, pushes him to improve, allows him to showcase his skills, and teaches him the game the right way. Ament also values a strong recruiting class with players he wants to play with and a team culture that fosters a family environment with strong bonds on and off the court. Whenever Ament does commit to a school, a significant monetary name, image and likeness (NIL) package is set to be a key factor in his college choice.

The Finalists: Arkansas, Duke, Kentucky, Louisville, and Tennessee

Ament is considering a top-five list of schools: Arkansas, Duke, Kentucky, Louisville, and Tennessee. He has officially visited each of his finalists and is the highest-rated class of 2025 prospect yet to commit to a school.

Duke Blue Devils

Duke was previously seen as the top option. Of Ament’s final five schools, only Duke is still playing in the NCAA Tournament. The Blue Devils cruised past Alabama on Saturday night to win the East Regional and reach the Final Four for the first time since 2022.

Kentucky Wildcats

Kentucky coach Mark Pope’s 2025 high school recruiting class includes Moreno and left-handed guards Jasper Johnson and Acaden Lewis. Ament, who played high school basketball in Virginia, was teammates with Johnson on the United States team that won gold at the FIBA U18 Men’s AmeriCup in Argentina last summer. Kentucky’s signed and sealed trio of Moreno, Johnson and Lewis gives UK the sixth-best high school recruiting class in the nation for 2025, according to the 247Sports Composite leaderboard. A commitment from Ament would have Kentucky jump both Notre Dame and Arkansas into fourth place.

When speaking about Kentucky and Pope in February on The Youngins Sports Podcast presented by Swish Cultures, Ament pointed to UK’s offensive style and its 3-point shooting approach as positives in his consideration of the Wildcats. Kentucky broke the school record for 3-pointers made in a season during the 2024-25 campaign, which ended Friday night with an NCAA Tournament Sweet 16 loss to Tennessee. Pope - who previously recruited Ament when he was the head coach at BYU - extended a Kentucky scholarship offer to Ament in June. Kentucky’s pursuit of Ament has been ongoing since then, but it picked up steam in recent months after UK lost a recruiting battle to North Carolina for five-star power forward Caleb Wilson in January.

Ament twice had an up-close look at the Kentucky program this past season. He was on a visit to Tennessee on Jan. 28 when a shorthanded Kentucky squad went to Knoxville and won. Then, Ament was on an official visit to Kentucky in February and watched another shorthanded win by UK over Tennessee. Just a few days after that game, Pope went to Virginia to watch Ament play on his high school senior night.

Tennessee Volunteers

Nate Ament is an American college basketball player for the Tennessee Volunteers of the Southeastern Conference (SEC).

Early in the second half of Tennessee’s Jan. 24 game at Alabama, Nate Ament, the Vols’ 6-foot-10 freshman, received a pass beyond the left side of the three-point line, and after blowing past his defender, 6-foot-8 freshman London Jemison, took off toward the rim. Ament was quickly met there by the Crimson Tide’s 7-foot center Charles Bediako and 6-foot-10 junior Taylor Bol Bowen. Ament rose, absorbed contact with Bol Bowen, lifted the ball over his head, brought it down to shoulder level and then bounced it off the backboard and into the basket. Bol Bowen was whistled for a foul. When Ament’s feet touched the court again, he let out a yell and did a semi-chest bump with teammate Jaylen Carey.

The Recruiting Landscape and Ament's Versatility

Zach Welch, an analyst for Pro Insight Basketball, considers Ament one of the most versatile players in the 2025 high school recruiting class. Welch believes Ament can make a tangible impact early in college and that his college destination will significantly influence his developmental pathway. Given Ament's versatile game, his utilization and development at his chosen school will be crucial.

Ament's Performance and Potential Impact

Ament's performance is comparable to other notable Tennessee freshmen like Ernie Grunfeld, Tobias Harris, and Chris Lofton. Freshman Nate Ament is averaging 17.6 points per game, ranking third all-time for a Tennessee freshman. Bernard King holds the top freshman scoring record for the Vols, averaging 26.4 points per game in 1974-75.

Before the season began, he was regarded as one of the top two or three freshmen in a rookie class some recruiting analysts think is the best in history. One final ranking of the class of 2025 placed Ament atop the list, ahead of Duke’s Cameron Boozer and BYU’s AJ Dybantsa, and he was a consensus top four pick. Ament averaged 17.8 points, 7.6 rebounds and 3.0 assists in his first eight games and won three of the SEC’s first four Freshman of the Week awards.
