A Unique Residential Learning Community

As one of Michigan State University's three residential colleges, James Madison College offers students an exceptional living-learning experience in Case Hall, where students live, learn and engage with faculty in an integrated academic community. JMC is a residential college, and Case Hall is the center of the living-learning community. The residential environment nurtures a living-learning environment that promotes exchange and collaboration between students, faculty, staff, and the broader MSU community. This residential model creates an environment where students and faculty collaborate daily to examine critical political, legal, social, and economic issues affecting our world. Total enrollment is limited to maintain a small college environment within Michigan State University.

Case Hall includes not only the residence hall rooms of its on-campus students but also faculty offices, classrooms, dining facilities, and seminar rooms. In the evenings, cultural programs, speakers, presentations, and other extracurricular events are regularly scheduled. At the same time, the college's students are full members of the Michigan State University student body. They take approximately half their courses in other units of the university and enjoy all benefits of living on a large, beautiful campus.

Faculty and Curriculum

The faculty of James Madison College have been recruited from several academic disciplines, such as American studies, economics, history, sociology, political science and political theory. The college emphasizes teaching excellence, individualized attention to students and scholarly research in public and international affairs. Faculty members devote a substantial amount of time to individual student advisement; as a result, programs of study are designed to satisfy the academic needs, intellectual curiosity and career goals of each student. The College’s courses are conducted as either lecture-discussion or collaborative classes in which student participation is encouraged and often expected. A typical class might focus on such issues as how globalization affects civil society, or how theories of justice evolve into systems of laws, or how a society's cultural and social values influence its economic development. In short, the emphasis throughout the program is on the dynamics of public and international affairs and public decision making.

The curriculum and individual courses are multidisciplinary, cultivating in our students’ skills of rigorous thought, lucid prose writing and articulate speech. This rigorous program features serious attention to written work, analytical writing, critical thinking, lively and respectful class discussion, and collaborative work. Competency in writing is strongly emphasized for all students in James Madison College, and research papers and other writing assignments have been incorporated into the requirements for each of the majors and all the College courses.

Preparing Leaders for Global Challenges

With over 1,000 current students and a 90th-percentile placement rate, James Madison College graduates become leaders in government, politics, business, education, and human services. The College has graduated numerous Rhodes Scholars, Truman Scholars, Marshall Scholars, Fulbright Scholars, National Science Foundation Fellows, Mitchell Scholars and regularly represents a high percentage of Michigan State University's Phi Beta Kappa class.

Academic Programs

James Madison College offers four distinctive undergraduate majors that prepare students for careers in government, international relations, law, business, and public service. Its undergraduate program leads to a Bachelor of Arts degree. Students who elect to pursue additional majors should notify the James Madison College Assistant Dean or their advisor as early as possible in order to plan their academic program. The majors are:

Comparative Cultures and Politics (CCP): Examines how culture and politics intersect in global public affairs through a humanities and social sciences approach.
International Relations (IR): Focuses on international security, political economy, global governance, and foreign policy analysis.
Political Theory and Constitutional Democracy (PTCD): Explores philosophical and historical foundations of political communities and democratic practice.
Public Affairs for Secondary Education (PASE): Prepares future social studies educators through a public and international affairs lens.
Social Relations and Policy (SRP): Investigates public policy issues through the lens of group relations in the United States and internationally.

Included in the James Madison College program is a concentrated junior or senior year field experience where students work for an agency of government, private enterprise, non-profit and community organizations, media, and many other institutions. Junior Visit Days: High school juniors and their families are invited to learn more about James Madison College at Michigan State University during Junior Visit Days. Junior Visit Days are designed specifically for high school juniors and will help you explore how JMC can support your academic goals and interests. You’ll hear from Madison faculty and staff and take a tour of the academic areas of Case Hall (this tour will not include residence rooms). Located in Case Hall (842 Chestnut Road) on MSU campus.
Green and White Days: If you're considering applying to MSU, Green and White Days (held annually in the summer) is the program for you! Here you’ll have the flexibility to customize your schedule and explore campus at your own pace. You can also connect with campus resources, find out more about Spartan life and see spots on campus that aren’t visited during regular tours! Green & White Days will repeat daily on July 18, 21-25.
Fall Visit Days: High school students and families are invited to learn more about James Madison College (JMC) - MSU’s residential college specializing in public policy and international affairs - during Fall Visit Days. These events will help you learn more about JMC’s majors, residential college living, future career paths and Madison student experiences. A panel of current students, academic advisors, faculty and alumni will provide insight into the application process, selecting a major and answer all of your questions. on Sept. 19, Oct. 3, Oct. 17, Oct. 31 and Nov. 21.
Meet Madison Days: Admitted students and families are invited to Meet Madison Days to get an in-depth look at James Madison College. These events are a chance to dive into the details that make JMC unique. During Meet Madison Days, you’ll:
- Hear directly from the JMC community. Faculty members, academic advisors, outreach specialists, and internship and career coordinators will be available to help you learn more about your future journey at the college.
- Participate in a mini-class led by a JMC professor. This session will give you a taste of what to expect as a JMC student and allow you to explore the college's four majors firsthand.
- Tour Case Hall. JMC is a residential college and Case Hall is the center of the living-learning community. Our short tour will offer a closer look at JMC’s classrooms, study spaces and faculty offices.
- Most importantly, you'll connect with current students who can share their experiences. on Jan. 16, Feb. 16, March 13, March 27, April 10 and April 17.
MSU Admitted Student Day: During MSU's Admitted Student Day, James Madison College hosts a variety of sessions to help you get a better sense of your future at the college. Admitted Student Day will be hosted on April 11, 2026.

Admissions

Students admitted to Michigan State University are also admissible to James Madison College. Enrollments in the college are, however, limited. Prospective first year and transfer students should notify the Michigan State Office of Admissions as early as possible of their desire to enroll in the college. Limited numbers of currently enrolled MSU students may also be eligible to transfer into the college; such students are encouraged to contact the Recruitment Coordinator in the college early in the fall semester. Subject to space availability, students may transfer into the college until their junior year without delaying completion of their degrees.
