Mastering the MRCOG Part 2 Syllabus: A Comprehensive Guide
The MRCOG Part 2 exam is a significant step for doctors seeking to specialize in obstetrics and gynaecology in the UK. This article provides a structured approach to understanding the syllabus, preparing effectively, and maximizing your chances of success. It covers everything from eligibility and exam format to essential study materials and preparation strategies.
Understanding the MRCOG Part 2 Exam
The Part 2 MRCOG is designed to assess a candidate's understanding and application of basic clinical knowledge at the level expected of a UK trainee in obstetrics and gynaecology, as defined by the RCOG curriculum. Unlike Parts 1 and 3, Part 2 evaluates a broad range of Capabilities in Practice (CiP) across 15 knowledge areas.
Eligibility
To apply for MRCOG Part 2, candidates planning to enter the UK Specialist Register must have passed MRCP Part 1 within the last 7 years and be in specialty training. For trainees appointed to a type 1 StR post in the UK, it is mandatory to subscribe to the Trainees’ Register. International trainees and international exam candidates are not eligible to join the Trainees’ Register, but it is strongly recommended that you become an RCOG Associate. With an RCOG membership, you get a 20% discount on all Cambridge University Press Academic books.
Exam Format
MRCOG Part 2 is a computer-based test (CBT) consisting of two papers. Each paper contributes equally to the final score, with paper 1 accounting for 50% and paper 2 accounting for the other 50%. The exam uses two question formats: Single Best Answer (SBA) questions and Extended Matching Questions (EMQ). While you may be familiar with SBAs from MRCOG Part 1, EMQs will be a new format, offering more options to choose from and requiring a deeper understanding of the subject matter. The SBA questions and EMQ question topics can overlap.
Pass Rates and Preparation Time
The pass rates for MRCOG Part 2 are notably low compared to other exams. Therefore, it is crucial to dedicate a substantial amount of time to revision and preparation before booking the exam. Of all of the membership exams we have researched, Part 2 MRCOG has the longest recommended preparation time.

A Strategic Approach to Preparation
Effective preparation for MRCOG Part 2 requires a structured and comprehensive approach. Here's a step-by-step guide:
Month 1: Assessment and Planning
Begin by evaluating your current knowledge base through mock SBA exams to identify your strengths and weaknesses. Gather your preparation materials. Following this, map out the entire curriculum and create a study plan that focuses on maintaining your strengths while addressing your weaknesses.
Months 2-9: Learning and Consolidation
The majority of your preparation time should be dedicated to learning and consolidating information. Maintain a dedicated notebook to record new learning, add to it regularly, and revisit it frequently.
Final Months: Revision and Practice
In the final months leading up to the exam, shift your focus to revision and practice. Avoid introducing new material and instead concentrate on reinforcing what you have already learned. This includes reviewing your notes, practicing with SBA and EMQ question banks, and working through previous papers. Remember that questions are sometimes repeated, so the more questions you can practice, the better.
Essential Study Resources
There is no single textbook that covers the entire MRCOG Part 2 syllabus. Instead, questions are based on the latest evidence presented in recent guidelines. Here's a breakdown of essential resources:

Key Knowledge Areas and Modules
From 2019, the modules are renamed as knowledge areas. The core content remains the same. The Part 2 MRCOG assesses the Knowledge Required for Clinical Practice. Following is the list of modules to be examined in part 2 MRCOG. I have compiled them all for your ease. Here are some examples of modules covered in the exam:
- Module 3: Core surgical skills.
- Module 7: Management of labour.
- Module 9: Postpartum problems.
- Module 11: Subfertility.
- Module 13: Early pregnancy care.
Each module typically includes a lecture in the form of semi-interactive lecture notes on PowerPoint, covering the core knowledge required for the exam. Emphasis is placed on epidemiology, investigations, and management of conditions as outlined in the syllabus. Lectures are often followed by a series of Single Best Answer Questions to test understanding.
