Navigating Student Hub Services at MSU Denver: A Comprehensive Guide
Metropolitan State University (MSU) Denver offers a variety of student hub services designed to support students throughout their academic journey. Among these services, health insurance stands out as a crucial aspect, particularly for students taking a significant course load. This article provides a comprehensive overview of the health insurance requirements, available options, and additional financial services available to MSU Denver students.
Understanding the Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP) Requirement
MSU Denver has specific health insurance requirements for students enrolled in nine or more credit hours during the Fall and Spring semesters. There are slightly different rules for domestic and international students. Students meeting this credit threshold are automatically enrolled in the University Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP) and charged the corresponding semester premium. However, students who already possess adequate health insurance coverage have the option to waive this automatic enrollment. To do so, they must submit a health insurance waiver by the specified deadline each semester to avoid being charged for the SHIP premium.
Domestic and International Student Requirements
The university distinguishes between domestic and international student health insurance requirements. While the core principle of mandatory enrollment for students taking nine or more credits remains the same, specific details and requirements may vary. Students should consult the MSU Denver website for detailed information on both Domestic and International Health Insurance Requirements.
Accessing Healthcare Under SHIP
The MSU Denver SHIP is tailored to meet the unique needs of students, regardless of immigration status. It ensures access to reputable hospitals, doctors, specialists, and behavioral healthcare services. The plan also offers online tools, discount programs, and personalized support to help students navigate the healthcare system effectively. Worldwide travel assistance is also available.
Understanding how to access healthcare under SHIP is crucial. Students are encouraged to familiarize themselves with the plan's details by reading the "Accessing Healthcare on SHIP" guide.

Key Benefits of the Student Health Insurance Plan
The SHIP plan offers a range of benefits designed to provide comprehensive healthcare coverage for MSU Denver students. These benefits include:
- Access to hundreds of hospitals and medical offices throughout Colorado and nationwide.
- 100% coverage for services received at the Health Center at Auraria.
- 24/7 access to telehealth and telebehavioral healthcare services.
It is important for students to understand the full scope of benefits offered by SHIP to make informed decisions about their healthcare needs.
Important Considerations: Coverage Dates, Premiums, and Deadlines
To make informed decisions about health insurance, students must be aware of the coverage dates, premium costs, and waiver deadlines associated with SHIP. This information allows students to assess the value of the plan and determine whether it aligns with their individual circumstances and existing coverage.
Opt-Out Waiver Instructions
Students who have existing health insurance coverage that meets MSU Denver's requirements can opt-out of SHIP by submitting a health insurance waiver. Detailed instructions on how to complete the opt-out waiver process are available on the university's website. It is crucial to adhere to the specified deadlines to avoid automatic enrollment and associated charges.
Special Coverages
MSU Denver offers special coverage options tailored to specific student populations, such as graduating students, graduate students, and those attending summer semester. These coverages address the unique healthcare needs of these students during transitional periods in their academic careers.

Medicaid Members
Students with active Medicaid plans, including First Health Colorado, Denver Health Medicaid, or Colorado Access, should submit a waiver before the deadline to opt-out of SHIP. Failure to do so may result in SHIP being designated as the primary insurance, potentially impacting financial aid refunds.
Exploring Alternative Health Insurance Options
MSU Denver encourages students to explore and compare other health insurance options to SHIP. This allows students to make informed decisions based on their individual needs and financial circumstances.
Connect for Health Colorado
Connect for Health Colorado is the state's official health insurance marketplace, providing a platform for individuals and families to compare plans and enroll in coverage.

Testimonials
Student testimonials highlight the positive impact of available services. Liz helped me through the numbers before we pulled credit to help me understand if it would help my situation. I’m a comparison shopper. I can tell you where to get the best deal, whether it’s a couch or tile for the kitchen floor. For financial services, you can’t beat Credit Union of Denver. I have been with the credit union for almost 5 years now. I used their HELOC promotion to consolidate some credit card debt and it has been so easy to pay off at a lower interest rate. After paying it down I had availability to fix a few things around the house as well. Everybody is always so nice and friendly when I go in. One of our new members was referred by their friend. He had been saving for a truck and needed some help. I have been able to observe how your frontline staff is so personable with members. I have seen tellers help some elderly members with making them feel comfortable in the lobby, by grabbing comfortable chairs and bringing them over so that they don't have to stand for long periods while the employee uses the coin machine. The personalized service is meaningful. The Member Service reps help members through some tough times. For those like me, experiencing fraud on accounts, they help us know that they have our backs in rough times. I would like to add that the receptionists are great with helping members too.
We had a situation with a mortgage member who was experiencing a financial hardship. He had been let go from his job and with no income and had fallen two months behind on his mortgage. I worked with the member alongside with an organization called Neighbor to Neighbor to help him to get current. The organization works with families to help prevent their homes from going into foreclosure. Our member, Tim, is retired and raising his grandchildren. He and his wife have custody of the grandchildren. They had been receiving child support from their daughter, but she lost her job and stopped paying. With their income reduced and having to support 3 grandchildren, he was unable to afford their $510 payment on his auto loan. His loan was originally $24,802 and he had paid it down to $4,264. After reviewing his loan situation, we were able to do a loan modification to help the member keep his truck and have a lower payment. I moved my auto loan over to CUD and they were able to reduce my interest rate and save me over $4000 on my loan! Such a wonderful program and the process was easy.
