Experiencing the Magic: A Guide to Super Nintendo World and the Allure of Princess Daisy

Super Nintendo World at Universal Studios Hollywood is more than just a theme park; it's an immersive journey into the heart of the Mushroom Kingdom. From the moment you step through the iconic green pipe, you're transported into a vibrant world filled with interactive experiences, thrilling rides, and the chance to meet beloved characters. While Mario, Luigi, and Princess Peach have been staples of this experience, the growing popularity of Princess Daisy suggests she may soon join their ranks.

Entering a Gamer's Paradise

As you walk through the life-sized green pipe, sparkling rainbow colors surround you, and a familiar soundtrack plays in the background, creating a sense of déjà vu. It's a time travel experience that brings back the joy of being a kid all over again. The magic of Universal is evident as people of all ages from around the world enter the land, some even getting on their knees, overcome with emotion. Families dressed as their favorite characters walk around with Yoshi headbands and Bowser backpacks, creating a vibrant and joyful atmosphere. Some are so moved that they are proposing to their partners in front of Peach’s Castle.

Your Mission in the Mushroom Kingdom

Turns out you’re not merely visiting SUPER NINTENDO WORLD - you’re here on a mission (as one always is when in the company of Mario and friends). As soon as you enter the land through the pipe and into Peach’s Castle, the portraits on the two side walls set up your quest: Bowser Jr. has stolen the Golden Mushroom from Peach’s Castle and Princess Peach is counting on you to retrieve it . To do that, you need to collect three keys within the land - whether it’s by facing the Key Challenges, collecting all 8-bit characters, or by getting them from Mario and Princess Peach. Phew, busy day for you!

Navigating Super Nintendo World

Depending on the day, you’ll need to make a reservation to enter the land by joining the Virtual Line. It’s pretty straightforward: once you’ve entered the theme park, open up the Official Universal Studios Hollywood app, select the number of people in your party (up to 10) and join the virtual queue for that same day. And although the Virtual Line gives you the flexibility of enjoying the rest of the theme park while you wait for your turn to experience the land, I personally recommend getting SUPER NINTENDO WORLD Early Access Ticket. Walking into the land before everyone else? Yes, please! It’s a great opportunity to explore every inch of SUPER NINTENDO WORLD, take awesome photos of the Mushroom Kingdom, get extra practice on the Key Challenges, snag your favorite Nintendo souvenirs (wanted: the reversible Super Star pillow that turns into a ?

The Power-Up Band: Enhancing Your Experience

To fully immerse yourself in Super Nintendo World, consider purchasing a Power-Up Band. These silicone wristbands come in six styles, each based on a different Super Mario character: Mario, Luigi, Princess Peach, Princess Daisy, Toad, and Yoshi. While each character band has its unique color scheme, all styles of Power-Up Bands operate identically. They’re also all the same size, and intuitively wrap around your wrist. Selecting your Power-Up Band is like picking your character in a video game - pick the band that speaks to you! Once you do, you’ll be placed on that character’s Team. Every SUPER NINTENDO WORLD store at Universal CityWalk Hollywood and Universal Studios Hollywood sells Power-Up Bands. They cost about $40 each.

With a Power-Up Band synced to the Universal Studios Hollywood app, you can collect digital coins by punching ? Blocks, earn stamps by completing tasks, and compete with other guests on the leaderboards. The Power-Up Band also unlocks additional gameplay activities and experiences, such as collecting digital coins and stamps when completing milestones within the land. Checkpoints positioned within SUPER NINTENDO WORLD will enable guests to track their status against others. Guests can also amass keys after winning Key Challenges from Goomba Crazy Crank, Koopa Troopa POWer Punch, Piranha Plant Nap Mishap and Thwomp Panel Panic - collecting at least three of them will ultimately allow access to the final boss battle with Bowser Jr.

The Power-Up Band fun doesn’t stop once you leave the theme park - it’s also an amiibo! Amiibo are interactive collectibles that, when connected to your Nintendo Switch, can be used in various ways within select games. Each amiibo corresponds to the character associated with your Power-Up Band. For example, if you have a Toad Power-Up Band, you can use it as a Toad amiibo.

Key Challenges: Interactive Gameplay

Key Challenges are some of the most fun, interactive activities you can play in all of Universal Studios Hollywood.

  • Goomba Crazy Crank: Roll the Goomba away from you by cranking a wheel as fast as you can.
  • Koopa Troopa POWer Punch: This one’s all about timing - hit a POW Block at the right moment to send the shell up the green pipe. The shell will then punch a POW Block above, taking down a Koopa Troopa. You only get three chances!
  • Piranha Plant Nap Mishamp: With the help of friends, get a Piranha Plant back to sleep by slamming a series of alarm clocks off. But be careful, they’ll turn back on again!
  • Thwomp Panel Panic: In this timed, multiplayer activity, your team needs to tap blue and yellow tiles to make a wall all one color before the Thwomp comes down and changes all the tile colors.

Now, you can absolutely play all four Key Challenges without a Power-Up Band. But with one, you can collect Stamps (more on that below) and digital keys. Completing a Key Challenge earns you one key.

Bowser Jr. Shadow Showdown: The Final Challenge

This is maybe my favorite activity in all of SUPER NINTENDO WORLD, so don’t miss out on it! In this activity, your goal is to retrieve the Golden Mushroom from Bowser Jr. During the activity you’ll see a shadow version of yourself projected on the wall in front of you. Once the clock starts, you’ll jump to hit ? Blocks, duck to dodge Bullet Bills, throw fireballs, and swat Bob-ombs away - it’s a total blast. But remember! You need three keys to play Bowser Jr. Shadow Showdown. And to collect keys, you need a Power-Up Band. So with that perk alone, the Power-Up Band brings the fun to the next level.

Collecting Digital Coins and Stamps: Exploring Every Nook and Cranny

The sound of collecting a digital coin in Super Mario video games is so satisfying - and you can hear it all over SUPER NINTENDO WORLD. The kinetic land is covered in yellow ? Blocks. Which is fun in and of itself. But only with a Power-Up Band can you actually collect those digital coins. When you punch your fist with the hand wearing the Power-Up Band against the bottom of the ?

If you love to explore every nook and cranny of a land like I do, collecting stamps at SUPER NINTENDO WORLD is a must. It’s what makes the land not just an experience, but a game unto itself. Some stamps are collected at a touch point - you discover them throughout the land and tap them with your Power-Up Band. Others are acquired by completing certain tasks, from digital coin collection to defeating Bowser Jr. stamps are each worth a certain number of coins, ranging from 15 to 300. There are dozens of stamps to collect all over the land, and you can find them on the SUPER NINTENDO WORLD hub on your app. Tap around on the stamp pages on your app to see how you can earn them, and how many digital coins each is worth. Click the yellow block under your username to check them all out.

  • Key Challenges: These stamps are associated with the four Key Challenges and Bowser Jr.
  • Mario Kart: Collect these stamps by discovering them in the Mario Kart: Bowser’s Challenge queue and by completing specific tasks within the ride itself.
  • SUPER NINTENDO WORLD: These stamps are found all over the parts of the land that aren’t attractions. Punching bricks and ? Blocks also fall into this section.

There are so many stamps to collect, you can’t possibly snag ‘em all in just one visit to SUPER NINTENDO WORLD.

Ranking and Competition: Who's the Best?

What’s the fun in collecting coins and stamps if you can’t see how many other guests have collected, right? Click the green “Rank” tab at the bottom of the SUPER NINTENDO WORLD hub on your app. These include rankings for Daily, All Time, Mario Kart: Bowser’s Challenge and Bowser Jr. Shadow Showdown coin collection. You can also see the ranking for Teams - you’re on the Team of the character whose Power-Up Band you’re using. If your friends and family have Power-Up Bands and are synced to the app, you can track their scores, too. Click back to the pink “Options” tab, then tap “Follow Players.” There, you can search players by their username, and add them to your app. To compare points, go back to the “Rank” tab.

Meeting Beloved Characters: An Enhanced Experience

While meet and greet interactions with Mario, Luigi and Princess Peach are accessible to guests visiting the land, the Power-Up Band may provide an enhanced experience with the characters. As you walk into the Mushroom Kingdom, you’ll probably need to hit pause for a moment to take it all in. Go on, you deserve it. Once you’re ready to resume, check out Mt. Beanpole and all of its layers! Can you spot the Goombas, Piranha Plants, Thwomps, coins, ? Blocks, and Koopa Troopas moving around the facade of the land? One thing to keep in mind is that there’s no right way to explore the land. You can do it differently every time you come.

Mario Kart: Bowser's Challenge

This is the moment you’ve all been waiting for - I know I have. It’s time to put on the visor and battle Team Bowser alongside Mario, Luigi and friends on Mario Kart: Bowser’s Challenge. This groundbreaking ride has cutting-edge technology that makes you feel like you’re actually steering through different levels and versions of the Mario Kart game. You drive on different tracks, go up in the clouds, and drift through underwater courses, all while collecting coins and throwing shells to win the Golden Cup. Who knows, you might even make it to Rainbow Road…

As you explore the different areas of the queue, including a set of Yoshi’s Island themed spaces, Bowser’s iconic castle (where you get the best view of the land), and two pre-show rooms (where you’ll gear up with a pretty cool visor), you’ll eventually be ready to board a kart. But first things first: make sure you tap your Power-Up Band to the steering wheel right in front of you so you can earn points and see how well you’re doing compared to other teams (and isn’t that the whole point?). Next, attach your special goggles to the visor and… well, enjoy the ride!

Dining at Toadstool Cafe: A Culinary Adventure

Toadstool Cafe is an attraction in itself. From creation to execution, Chef Toad put a lot of thought and time into each item. The Super Mushroom Soup (probably my favorite dish) is a creamy mushroom soup with truffle oil and little mushroom crackers on it, served in an awesome Super Mushroom bowl. The Princess Peach Cupcake, almost too pretty to eat, is a raspberry-filled funfetti cake and the Mt. Beanpole Cake represents the tiers of the landscape in the Mushroom Kingdom. From the mind-blowing pesto-grilled-chicken Luigi Burger (adding a slice of crunchy green pepper is just genius!), to the ? Block Tiramisu (which I recommend using one of the cookie block walls as a vessel to dig into the dessert!) to the Super Star Lemon Squash, a lemon soda topped with mango-flavored Super Stars with juice-filled bobas that pop inside your mouth, everything on the menu is cooked, plated and decorated to perfection.

Shopping: Bringing the Magic Home

Super Star Popcorn Bucket (that lights up!), Super Mushroom Drink Bottles, Yoshi and Luigi Headbands, Chef Toad plushies, Mario Kart themed shirts, stylish backpacks (one of which shaped like Bowser’s shell), a lamp with a little Mario jumping … There aren’t enough shopping bags in SUPER NINTENDO WORLD for all I wanted to bring home with me. Although you can get most of the merchandise options around Universal Studios Hollywood and CityWalk, the most exclusive ones can be found at the 1-UP Factory store, located within SUPER NINTENDO WORLD, right by the Checkpoint screens. As other fun elements in the land, you enter the store by walking into a yellow pipe.

The Growing Appeal of Princess Daisy

While Princess Peach currently holds court in her gazebo, there's a growing sentiment among fans for Princess Daisy to have a more prominent role in Super Nintendo World. Daisy has been a significant part of the Mario franchise for over two decades, appearing in numerous spin-off games. Nintendo has seemingly been pushing her more into the spotlight, especially after her appearance in Super Mario Bros. Wonder.

Interestingly, kids have been seen holding Daisy plushes, wearing Daisy Power-Up Bands, and even dressing up as Daisy when visiting the park. This indicates a strong appeal and recognition of the character among younger audiences, suggesting that a Daisy meet-and-greet would be a welcome addition.

Potential Locations for New Characters

The question then becomes: where would new characters like Daisy be placed? Given her status as a princess, the Peach area seems like a natural fit. Alternatively, the Mario/Luigi area could also work. Some have even suggested rotating characters seasonally, allowing for more variety and managing crowds.

The Possibility of a Talking Daisy

If Daisy were to join the character meet-and-greets, fans hope that she would be able to interact with guests like Peach can. This would add another layer of immersion and create a more memorable experience for visitors.
