Unleash Your Creativity: A Guide to MCAD Continuing Education Courses

The Minneapolis College of Art and Design (MCAD) offers a wide array of continuing education courses for adults, providing opportunities for personal enrichment and career development. These classes cater to individuals of all skill levels and interests, from beginners to experienced artists and designers. Who Can Participate?

MCAD Continuing Education classes are open to all. You do not need to be an enrolled MCAD student to participate! Seeking career development? Personal enrichment? MCAD inspires lifelong learning for students of all ages. A variety of programs-both in person and online-are taught by professional working artists and designers. These courses are open to students ages 16 and above.

Figure Drawing Co-op

Throughout the year, Continuing Education sponsors the Figure Drawing Co-op, open drawing sessions for anyone interested in drawing from the live nude model. No instruction is provided. Please see link for more information.

Art and Design Classes

Year after year MCAD offers highly regarded art-and-design programming for adults taught by professional working artists. Classes are offered evenings, weekends, or online. Here's a glimpse into some of the exciting courses available:

Drawing and Painting

  • Watercolor Techniques: Learn the fundamentals of how to control watercolor through a step-by-process, building from simple to complex renderings and easy to difficult compositions. Using flowers and plants as subject matter, create watercolor paintings that are vibrant, delicate, and luminous.

Digital Media and Design

  • Web Development Series: MCAD offers a series of web development courses to help you build your skills in this in-demand field. This is the second and third course in the Web Development course series. One course started February 23 and is open for registration.

  • Figma for App Prototyping: Learn how to create, share, and test an app prototype while learning the basics of Figma, a versatile cloud-based prototyping software that offers the opportunity to explore web and mobile apps, graphic, and UI/UX design in a collaborative and user-friendly environment.

Printmaking and Collage

  • Collagraphy: Explore the kinds of creations that can come from combining collage and printmaking techniques through collagraphy.

  • Intaglio Printmaking: Discover the expressive possibilities of intaglio printmaking, a technique in which images are created by incised or engraved designs into a printing plate-the created lines hold the ink and produce richly detailed prints.

  • Character Design for Visual Media: Characters are essential to making a successful story. Take time to observe and discuss how creators establish characters in visual media, including film, animation, comics, and games.

  • Visual Storytelling: In an era of data overload, being able to tell a compelling visual story is what makes insights actionable.

  • Colour Literacy: Emotion is a powerful connector when considering relationships between color, art, and design. This course focuses on the emerging field of Colour Literacy and explores the relevance of color to emotion as a salient approach to visual communication.

  • Comic Book Creation and Design: Explore the expansive and diverse world of comic book stories and drawing styles while learning the fundamental aspects of comic book creation and design.
