Mark Consuelos: From Academic Roots to Television Icon

Mark Andrew Consuelos, a celebrated American actor and television personality, has captivated audiences with his versatility and charm. From his early days on the ABC soap opera All My Children to his role as Hiram Lodge on The CW's Riverdale, and now as co-host of Live with Kelly and Mark, Consuelos' journey is one of continuous reinvention and unwavering dedication.

Early Life and Education: A Transcontinental Upbringing

Born in Zaragoza, Spain, on March 30, 1971, Mark Andrew Consuelos' upbringing was far from conventional. His Italian mother, Camilla, and Mexican father, Saul Consuelos, instilled in him a rich cultural heritage. The family's early years were spent traversing continents, moving from Spain to Sardinia, then to Puglia in Italy.

Amidst political uncertainty in Italy during the mid-1970s, the Consuelos family sought stability in the United States. They settled in Lebanon, Illinois, a small town of approximately 3,200 people. Mark remembers his childhood in Lebanon as idyllic, surrounded by soya bean fields and a close-knit community.

Despite being one of the few Mexican or Italian families in the area, Consuelos thrived in the small-town environment, receiving a "great education" and creating "great memories". He spent ten formative years in Lebanon, from first grade until his sophomore year of high school.

A significant culture shock awaited him when the family relocated to Tampa, Florida, for his final two and a half years of high school. Transitioning from a small town to a large high school and a completely different lifestyle, Consuelos adapted and continued his education.

Consuelos pursued higher education, initially at the University of Notre Dame before transferring to the University of South Florida. Although his father encouraged him to pursue a business degree, Consuelos' path took an unexpected turn.

The Spark of Acting: A Leap of Faith

Despite coming from an academic family-his brother became a doctor, and his sister a lawyer-Consuelos felt drawn to a different path. During his final months of college, he decided to explore acting, a decision that would forever alter the course of his life.

Consuelos was influenced by his father's actions, who, after work, pursued his degrees, instilling in him the importance of education through example rather than words. His father's emphasis on timeliness, reputation, and family values further shaped Consuelos' character.

He began participating in local theater productions in Florida, where he also secured an agent. Consuelos recalls his father taking an acting class outside of the university with a local theater group. His father suggested that he should come with him and see if he liked it. The agent sent him to New York for an audition, a trip from which he never returned.

His family's support was crucial during this transition. Despite the unconventional career choice, they encouraged him to follow his passion. He said, "For me to tell them that I’m not going to use my degree but go into this crazy field that nobody in my family was in or knew anything about, other than going to the movies, they were so supportive".

All My Children: A Breakthrough Role

Within two months of graduating college, Consuelos landed his breakthrough role on the ABC soap opera All My Children. Joining the cast in February 1995 as Mateo Santos, Consuelos quickly gained recognition. "Even with All My Children, I was part of a major storyline on daytime TV that centered around a Latino family from Texas".

All My Children was not only a career-defining moment but also a life-changing experience. It was on the set of the show that he met his future wife, Kelly Ripa. Their on-screen romance blossomed into a real-life love story, and the couple eloped in Las Vegas in May 1996.

A Multifaceted Career: Television, Film, and Beyond

After leaving All My Children in 2002, Consuelos continued to diversify his career. He starred in the feature film The Great Raid (2005) and appeared in movies such as My Super Ex-Girlfriend (2006) and Wedding Daze (2006).

Consuelos also ventured into hosting reality dating shows, including Age of Love and Science of Love, both airing on NBC in 2007. He hosted a weekly live segment on the Oprah Winfrey Show during its 23rd season, showcasing his versatility and engaging personality.

In 2013, Consuelos co-starred in Amazon's Alpha House, a political comedy where he played Florida Senator Andy Guzman. In 2017, he joined the cast of The CW drama Riverdale as Hiram Lodge, a role he played until the show's end in 2023.

Consuelos' talents extend beyond acting and hosting. He has also produced, optioning a book called Mexican Gothic, and is looking forward to getting it back on track. He is interested in finding those stories and those collaborations with other Latinos or with other showrunners that are supportive of our community.

Live with Kelly and Mark: A New Chapter

In April 2023, Consuelos embarked on a new chapter in his career, becoming the permanent co-host of Live with Kelly and Mark. Replacing Ryan Seacrest, Consuelos joined his wife, Kelly Ripa, on the long-running talk show, delighting fans with their natural chemistry and enduring relationship.

The pair's on-screen dynamic is a testament to their real-life bond. "She definitely challenges me in the best possible ways,” says Mark. “I’m just crazy about her when I look at her. Something happens".

Having worked together on All My Children and built a strong foundation, Consuelos and Ripa seamlessly transitioned into their roles as co-hosts. "We met each other on a soap and that’s how we spent the first seven years of our marriage".

Personal Life: Family, Values, and Inspiration

Consuelos' personal life is as fulfilling as his professional one. He and Ripa have three children: Michael (born 1997), Lola (born 2001), and Joaquin (born 2003). Family is a central theme in Consuelos' life. He cherishes his role as a father and husband, dedicating much of his energy to these titles.

Consuelos credits his wife, Kelly Ripa, as his real-life hero. He admires her bravery, integrity, and unwavering moral compass. "The bravest, fiercest, most loyal person with the utmost integrity - just knows the difference between right and wrong. She is my moral compass when it comes to life. She’s a woman of her word".

He also draws inspiration from his father, who taught him the importance of hard work, education, and family values. His father taught him about being on time or being early. Early is on time - on time is late. He taught me that reputation is something you earn, both good and bad. He taught me the importance of family. He taught me that to be a man and to apologize is one and the same.

Consuelos values staying active and healthy. He works out regularly, focusing on longevity and overall well-being. "Our goal is to stay moving as long as long as we can, you know, because our parents and their generation didn't really do this wasn't part of their life, and so I'm trying to avoid all like kind of the medical history that is looming for me".

Future Endeavors: Theater and Continued Growth

Anchored back in New York with Live!, Consuelos is eager to explore new avenues in his career. "Now that I’m here, I would love to do some theater".

Consuelos hopes that other Latino entertainers will follow, continuing to forge his own path. He remains committed to finding and supporting stories that reflect the diversity of the Latino community. I think the most effective I can be as a producer and a Latino is to find those stories and find those collaborations with other Latinos or with other showrunners that are supportive of our community.
