The Macmillan internship experience blends practical responsibilities with meaningful professional development. Interns are treated as valued contributors and often work closely with editors, designers, marketers, publicists, and departmental managers. This exposure helps participants understand how major publishing decisions are made - from selecting manuscripts to shaping marketing campaigns and designing book covers.
Internship Availability and Timing
Macmillan internships typically run during the summer, though some positions may be offered in the spring or fall depending on departmental needs. The program may include both on-site and remote roles, making it accessible to a broader range of students.
Macmillan Publishers is currently offering paid, part-time, remote internship opportunities for Spring 2025. Internships start on February 3, 2025 and will continue through May 9, 2025. If needed, there may be some flexibility in regards to the duration of the internship.
Macmillan Publishers is also currently offering paid, full-time, remote internship opportunities for Summer 2025. Internships start on June 2nd, 2025 and will continue through August 22nd, 2025.

Internship Divisions and Roles
Each intern is placed within a specific division, such as editorial, marketing, publicity, art and design, production, sales, digital operations, or children’s publishing.
Internships will be available in areas such as Editorial, Marketing/Digital Marketing, Publicity, Art & Design, Sales, Managing/Production Editorial, Production, Publishing Operations, Subrights, Creative Services, and Author Events. Internships in the Shared Services division will be available in areas such as Legal, Human Resources, and DEI.
Daily Tasks and Responsibilities
Daily tasks vary by department, but interns can expect to handle responsibilities that reflect the real work of publishing professionals. Editorial interns may review manuscripts, conduct research, prepare reader reports, and assist with author communication. Marketing interns might help draft promotional materials, brainstorm ideas for social media campaigns, or analyze audience engagement metrics.
Learning and Development Opportunities
Throughout the program, Macmillan emphasizes continuous learning. Interns often participate in workshops, Q&A sessions with executives, team-building activities, and informational meetings that provide an insider’s view of how a major publishing company operates. All interns will participate in the fourth annual summer intern project. In teams of 6-9, interns will be asked to develop a cohesive plan and presentation in response to an assigned publishing-related topic or issue facing the business today.
Interns in the program will become familiar with the basic structure of the department/team and gain a general understanding of the key roles the particular trade/shared services function plays in a publishing house. Interns will be provided with the opportunity to participate in job-related assignments, gain practical work experience, and network with employees from various departments - all virtually.

Mentorship plays a key role in the Macmillan internship experience. Every intern works closely with a supervisor or mentor who offers regular guidance, constructive feedback, and support. This relationship helps interns navigate their tasks, refine their skills, and gain clarity about their future career goals. Interns will receive close support from their designated employee mentor, gaining valuable guidance and feedback throughout their projects.
Work Environment and Culture
Macmillan’s workplace culture also encourages open communication and collaboration. Interns are invited to share ideas, ask questions, and participate actively in team projects. They operate by a Work-Life Balance Plan (Plan Concilia), which aims to enable professional development while respecting employees’ work-life balance. Compensation and Work Hours
Macmillan Publishers is currently offering paid internship opportunities. Interns will work no more than 25 hours per week for Spring internships and no more than 40 hours per week for Summer internships. The Summer 2025 internship has an hourly rate of $16.50/hour.
Eligibility and Application
The Macmillan publishing program is available for students currently enrolled in a college or university, who aspire to pursue a career in the publishing industry.
