The Lymphatic Education & Research Network: Fighting Lymphatic Diseases Through Education, Research, and Advocacy
The Lymphatic Education & Research Network (LE&RN) stands as an internationally recognized beacon of hope for individuals affected by lymphatic diseases. Founded in 1998, this non-profit organization is dedicated to the fight against lymphatic disease (LD) through a multi-pronged approach encompassing education, research, and advocacy. LE&RN's mission is to accelerate the prevention, treatments, and cures for lymphedema (LE), lipedema (LI), lymphatic anomalies, and the continuum of lymphatic diseases.
Understanding the Lymphatic System and Lymphatic Diseases
The lymphatic system is a crucial circulatory network within the body, comprising vessels, ducts, and nodes. Its primary function is to filter and distribute lymph, a fluid containing immune cells, throughout the body. This system plays a vital role in maintaining fluid balance, immune function, and waste removal.
When the lymphatic system malfunctions, it can lead to a range of lymphatic diseases. These diseases, including lymphedema, lipedema, and lymphatic anomalies, disrupt the normal flow of lymph, causing fluid accumulation and swelling, and other complications.
One of the primary symptoms of hereditary lymphedema is swelling or puffiness in various parts of the body due to the accumulation of lymphatic fluid in the soft layers of tissue under the skin.
LE&RN's Three-Pillar Approach
LE&RN's mission is executed through three core pillars: education, research, and advocacy.

Education
LE&RN is committed to raising awareness and understanding of lymphatic diseases among patients, healthcare professionals, and the general public. Through educational programs, resources, and events, LE&RN empowers individuals to recognize the signs and symptoms of lymphatic diseases, seek timely diagnosis and treatment, and advocate for their own healthcare needs.
Research
A central focus of LE&RN is promoting and supporting biomedical research aimed at improving treatment options and finding cures for lymphatic diseases. The organization invests in innovative research projects, facilitates collaboration among scientists and researchers, and serves as a catalyst for advancements in the field of lymphatics. LE&RN extends deep gratitude to Dr. Gary Gibbons as he retires from federal service and his current position as director of the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute at the The National Institutes of Health. For too long, lymphatic diseases have struggled for recognition and research investment. Dr. Gibbons helped to change that. He listened, engaged with our community, and helped ensure lymphatic diseases had a place in national research conversations. LE&RN remains committed to carrying the momentum forward.
Eleven young investigators were awarded travel stipends by LE&RN to allow for their attendance at the recent NIH Symposium. The awardees were grateful for the opportunity to advance their research knowledge and to be exposed to cutting-edge research in the field. Many noted how important this conference was in providing a platform for exchanging knowledge, not only among researchers but health care professionals and patients as well. Awardees came from programs across the United States and one young scientist traveled from the United Kingdom.
Advocacy
LE&RN advocates for policies and initiatives that support lymphatic disease research, improve access to care, and enhance the quality of life for individuals affected by these conditions. The organization works with government agencies, healthcare organizations, and other stakeholders to raise awareness of the challenges faced by the lymphatic disease community and to promote solutions that address these challenges.
Global Impact and Reach
LE&RN's impact extends far beyond national borders. With Chapters and Centers of Excellence located around the world, the organization has a global reach, connecting patients, researchers, and advocates across continents. This international network facilitates the exchange of knowledge, resources, and support, accelerating progress in the fight against lymphatic diseases.

World Lymphedema Day TM
World Lymphedema Day TM is an advocate-driven, global celebration dedicated to educating the world about lymphatic diseases and advancing meaningful change.
Community Engagement and Support
LE&RN fosters a strong sense of community among individuals affected by lymphatic diseases. Through support groups, online forums, and events, LE&RN provides a platform for patients, families, and caregivers to connect, share experiences, and find encouragement. These community-based initiatives play a vital role in empowering individuals to cope with the challenges of lymphatic diseases and to live full and meaningful lives.
LE&RN staff recently traveled to Texas for the Plano Walk to Fight Lymphedema and Lymphatic Diseases. This event gave hundreds of Texas supporters and many attendees from other states the opportunity to join forces, find out more about LE&RN and raise financial support to continue our mission to fight lymphatic disease and lymphedema though education, research and advocacy. This was the latest walk from the Lymphatic Education & Research Network following on the tail of the NY Walk to Fight Lymphedema and Lymphatic Diseases, our most successful walk to date and the groundbreaking California Run Walk to fight Lymphedema and Lymphatic Diseases.
Elevating Patient Voices Through Storytelling and Advocacy
LE&RN is committed to elevating patient voices through storytelling and advocacy. LE&RN partnered with Boston Lymphatic Symposium to present a first look at 'Jodie’s Body'. This powerful film highlights lived experiences within the lymphatic disease community and reflects our ongoing commitment to elevating patient voices through storytelling and advocacy.
A Personal Journey with Lymphedema
Donovan, who spent seven seasons in the Houston Astros minor league system before moving into coaching and front-office leadership, noticed unexplained swelling in his leg. Doctors literally told him they didn’t know what it was. With strong family support, he learned to advocate for himself and lead with perseverance.
