The Ultimate Guide to LSU Sorority Recruitment

Louisiana State University (LSU) boasts a vibrant Greek life, with sororities playing a significant role in campus culture. With approximately 1500 potential new members participating in Panhellenic recruitment each fall, understanding the process and how to stand out is crucial for anyone considering joining a sorority at LSU. This comprehensive guide will provide you with the information you need to navigate LSU sorority recruitment successfully.

LSU Panhellenic Council: The Governing Body

The Louisiana State University Panhellenic Council (PHC) serves as the governing body for 13 sororities on campus. Its purpose is to guide and support sorority relations within the university, foster intellectual accomplishment and sound scholarship, and cooperate with the college administration in maintaining high social standards. The PHC establishes guidelines, facilitates recruitment, and promotes the growth and development of the sorority community. It also compiles rules governing recruitment, new member periods, and initiation on campus.

According to Anna Kate Jackson, the President of LSU Panhellenic, joining an LSU Panhellenic sorority provides opportunities for sisterhood, service, and leadership, creating a Greek experience that extends beyond college years. The LSU Panhellenic community consists of dynamic women with diverse skills, beliefs, and backgrounds.

LSU Panhellenic Sorority Chapters

LSU is home to 12 Panhellenic sororities that participate in fall primary recruitment and one non-Panhellenic sorority, Sigma Alpha, which holds its own events and does not participate in primary recruitment. LSU’s sororities are located off of West Lakeshore Drive.

The Panhellenic sororities at LSU include:

Standing Out: Making a Strong Impression

With a large number of potential new members, it's essential to stand out during recruitment. Sororities begin looking at potential new members as early as January, so it's beneficial to get on their radar as soon as you commit to LSU.

Letters of Recommendation (Rec Letters)

Letters of recommendation or Recruitment Information Forms (RIFs) are crucial for helping the recruitment team get to know you. Even if you don’t know a member of the chapter, you should still try to obtain these. Reach out to older family members and friends who have attended college and their network. Ask teachers and coaches as well.

GPA and Transcript

Your high school GPA and transcript will influence the number of chapters you are eligible to visit during each round. The minimum GPA to participate in recruitment is a 2.7 high school GPA while enrolled in 12 credits, but this may limit your options. Each chapter has its own minimum GPA requirements, which will impact your choices. Maintaining good grades through graduation is vital, as even a small drop in GPA could affect your chances of receiving an invitation from your preferred houses.

Social Resume

Your social resume should highlight your character attributes and academic and social achievements. Remember, this is not a job application.

Recruitment Video

Your recruitment video is your opportunity to showcase your personality and make a memorable first impression. Take your time, rehearse, and be your authentic self.

Social Media Presence

While not mandatory, if you have a social media presence, ensure it is clean and reflects positively on your character. Sororities may check your accounts, regardless of privacy settings.

Gamma Chi Groups

Potential new members (PNMs) are divided into groups and assigned a recruitment counselor, known as a Gamma Chi. Gamma Chis are sorority members who disaffiliate from their chapters during recruitment to provide unbiased advice and guidance to PNMs.

Ice Water

Ice Water is the first and most casual round. PNMs watch a three-minute video from each chapter at LSU. Women mostly wearing athleisure since it’s typically what PNMs find themselves most comfortable in; however, the women can wear anything they would like

Philanthropy Round

The Philanthropy Round allows PNMs to learn about each chapter's service initiatives. PNMs are required to wear a T-shirt provided by the Panhellenic Council. This year’s theme was “home is where the heart is,” so a wide view of Sorority Row and the lake was displayed on the shirt.

Sisterhood Round

The Sisterhood Round focuses on the bonds of sisterhood within each chapter. PNMs typically wear brunch attire. The sorority typically does some sort of ceremony to allow the girls into a more intimate version of their sorority.

Bid Day

On Bid Day, Gamma Chis reveal their own sorority affiliation after providing unbiased advice throughout the week. PNMs receive a card revealing their assigned sorority.

Financial Considerations

Each chapter's dues vary. New member dues typically range from $1,388 to $3,074 per semester, with the first semester being the most expensive. The Panhellenic Council offers scholarships, with most financial aid available after new members are initiated around October of their first semester.
