The Long County School District is a public school district located in Long County, Georgia, United States. Based in Ludowici, it serves as the designated school district for residents in grades K-12, with the exception of areas within Fort Stewart.

Public Hearings and Tax Information
Long County Commissioners will hold three hearings to give the public an opportunity to express their opinions about the millage rate in coming weeks. The public hearings are to be held within a 14 day period and one has to be held at 6:00 pm or later.
Property Tax and Millage Rate
Property values have gone up in the Long County for new homes, commercial businesses, and reassessed homes, but the millage rate will remain unchanged. The millage rate will remain the same as last year, it will not increase. Long County BOC used a fully independent firm with Georgia Licensed property appraisers to do the reassessment. We cannot influence that process. Because the county has grown, and the whole tax digest goes up, we are require by law to advertise this as a tax increase. The proposed FLOST will bring some relief as it will be by State Law, 100% dedicated to lowering property taxes.

All appeals must be made in writing on the proper form. According to 2025 Legislature we can no longer add those items to the notices but these charges will be on your tax bills.

Tax Increase Hearings Explained
Georgia law requires a rollback millage rate be computed that will produce the same total revenue on the current year’s digest that last year’s millage rate would have produced had no reassessment occurred. It is calculated to ensure property tax revenue remains stable despite changes in property assessments.

Each year, the board of tax assessors is required to review the assessed value of taxable property in the county for property tax purposes.
When the trend of prices on properties that have recently sold in the county indicate there has been an increase in the fair market value of any specific property, the board of tax assessors is required by law to re-determine the value of such property and adjust the assessment. A general reassessment is required every three years.
As a result of the reassessments, which are required by state law, the existing county millage rate will produce 10% more revenue this year than it did last year.

Long County's Historical and Economic Context
Long County, historically and currently, is a rural, agricultural area. The principal farm crop was once cotton, but by the 1970s it had been replaced by tobacco, corn, soybeans, and cattle. The pine forests of the region have always played an important role in the economy.
