Tuition and Financial Aid

Landon School's annual tuition is approximately $50,000. Niche.com lists the high school tuition cost as $49,810. Financial aid is applied toward tuition which includes lunch and significant portions of field trips, books, and most fees. For families considering Landon, understanding the financial aspects is crucial. Landon uses the Clarity Application for financial aid. Families already receiving financial aid must re-apply every year via Clarity to account for any change in a family's financial need. Current Landon families must apply for aid by December 15, 2025. Families new to Landon have a February 1, 2026 deadline to submit the Clarity application. Families in the admissions application process must complete both the admissions application via Ravenna and the financial aid application via Clarity. Included in the calculation of a family’s need are household income, assets, liabilities, family size, and the number of children in tuition-charging schools. Because the interplay of these variables is complex, Landon cannot determine eligibility without a full application.

Academics

Middle School and Upper School utilize rotating block schedules that are similarly designed to maximize students' attention, with breaks for movement and club meetings in between. The Maguire Ethics Scholarship Program, funded by its namesake Cary M. Maguire '46, awards a merit-based scholarship of $10,000 to a student entering Upper School who demonstrates the highest standards of ethics, integrity, and character.

AP Courses and Academic Rigor

There is a debate about whether Landon's academic rigor is maintained even as they plan to exit AP courses. Every private school has or is in the process of removing AP course offerings. They’re certainly relax course pace and scope of content. Now all the no-AP label schools’ teachers can pick and choose what to teach or focus on, and for how long within the course name. They can still give hours of homework a week, you know, for rigor sake. Some argue that private schools don't need to offer AP courses like publics as their rigor is well known and enough for students to do well on AP exams. Privates are far more rigorous than most publics - which need AP courses to prove to colleges that their students are taking challenging courses. Others argue that all the no-AP label schools’ teachers can pick and choose what to teach or focus on, and for how long within the course name. They can still give hours of homework a week, you know, for rigor sake.

One parent shared a positive experience, noting that their son, who had previously aced every class in public school without much effort, is now challenged and thriving at Landon. He is now challenged, struggles with classes, overcomes those challenges - it’s so wonderful to see him rise to his full potential. It’s a long day with the athletics, but he’s loved the guys he’s met on each of his sports teams. Good kids, SMART and motivated, not “bad actors” like someone else said. Another parent mentioned that their kid is bright but absolutely has to work for all his grades. And the minute he takes his foot of the pedal, we see his grades come down.

Arts and Athletics

In collaboration with Holton-Arms School, Landon School performs three productions per year, a musical and a non musical. In addition to acting, students can learn lighting, sound and set design. Additionally, the school teaches arts such as painting, advanced drawing, architecture, ceramics, digital art, sculpture and photojournalism.

Landon competes in the Interstate Athletic Conference (IAC) alongside six other all boys' schools in D.C., MD, and VA. Landon School wrestler Joel Brown was named All-Met Wrestler of the Year by The Washington Post, after a 32-3 season. In 2023, The Landon School's wrestling team won the Interstate Athletic Conference title, its fourth since 2018. The Landon School's hockey team won the Interstate Athletic Conference title in February 2023. In 2022, The Landon School's soccer team beat St. Albans to win the Interstate Athletic Conference championship. Landon School alumnus Kristian Fletcher signed a contract in 2022 to play professional soccer for D.C. United.

Some argue that they like to think they are strong in athletics but for some sports the coaching is sub-par and some players are spending a little too much time in other "extra-curricular activities." Wonder if the coaches realize that some of their players are smoking pot and up to nonsense half the time. It is really too bad that the problem kids get the attention and praise over others who work hard and put in the time. I don't believe the coach-mentor philosophy they tout is really all that.

There are varying opinions on whether the "coach-mentor" system is genuinely effective or just a marketing ploy. Teacher-Coach-Mentor really is a thing. Some believe that the coach-mentor philosophy they tout is really all that. Others describe it as a "Bro code school," suggesting that it may not benefit all students equally.

Student Body and School Culture

The Landon student body is a topic of discussion, with some suggesting the presence of "bad actors" in the upper school grades. There seems to be many bad actors in one of the upper-school grades, how do they manage those students? However, others strongly disagree, highlighting the positive and motivated nature of the students. Good kids, SMART and motivated, not “bad actors” like someone else said.

Controversies and Incidents

In September 2022, several Landon School students were seen in a viral video singing a racial slur while riding the Washington Metro.

In 2022, the parents of Landon student Charlie Schnell withdrew their son after he was accused of drawing disturbing images of Black people and sharing it with a Black classmate. Schnell was bullied over the incident and disturbed by another student's threat of a school shooting. Less than two weeks later, Schnell committed suicide using a Landon banner, and his parents held the school responsible, saying that their biggest mistake was sending their son to Landon. Lawyers for the school sought unsuccessfully to dismiss a lawsuit brought by the student's parents. A confidential settlement was reached in 2025.

In the fall of the 2002-2003 school year, ten Landon students were caught cheating on their SAT exams. Among these students were eight who admitted to the offense one month later after rumors had spread throughout the school. Those eight students were suspended for the remaining month of the fall semester, though they were allowed to take their fall semester exams.

Do you really want to pay that much to have your kid exposed to that kind of toxicity? Non-denominational boys' school: Fills a niche -- non-denominational boys' school. If that is important to you, I believe its the only game in town (could be wrong).
Strong community: The community is extraordinarily tight and the teachers/coaches know the kids very well and on an academic and personal level.
Challenging academics: Our kid is bright but absolutely has to work for all his grades. And the minute he takes his foot of the pedal, we see his grades come down.
Engaged Head of School: Mr. Neill is terrific as HOS. He is academic and philosophical and strategic when you need him to be. And today when construction was causing disruptions during drop-off he was out there being the traffic police and directing cars for over an hour.
