Lady Hardinge Medical College: A Century of Excellence in Women's Medical Education

Lady Hardinge Medical College (LHMC), located in Connaught Place, New Delhi, stands as a pioneering institution in medical education, particularly for women. Established in 1916, this public medical college and central government hospital has a rich history and a strong commitment to providing quality medical education, research, and healthcare services. Affiliated with the University of Delhi since 1950 and recognized by the National Medical Commission (NMC), LHMC has consistently produced highly qualified and compassionate medical professionals.

Historical Overview

The college's origin lies in the vision of Lady Hardinge, the wife of Baron Charles Hardinge, the then Viceroy of India. Recognizing the limited opportunities for Indian women to pursue medical education, she took the initiative to establish a medical college exclusively for women. The foundation stone was laid in 1914, and the institution was initially named Queen Mary College and Hospital. However, on Queen Mary's suggestion, it was renamed Lady Hardinge Medical College to honor its founder.

The college began its operations with Kate Platt as the first principal and an initial cohort of 16 students. Initially affiliated with the University of the Punjab, students had to travel to Lahore to sit for their final examinations at King Edward Medical College. Over time, LHMC evolved from an autonomous institution managed by a governing body to being under the formal charge of the Central Government in 1953. Since 1991, the hospital has extended its services to male patients.
