University of Nairobi: A Comprehensive Overview of Programs and History
The University of Nairobi (UoN), a leading institution in Sub-Saharan Africa, stands as a beacon of higher education in Kenya. Based in Nairobi, the capital city, UoN is the oldest and largest university in the country. With a rich history dating back to 1956, the university has evolved into a comprehensive institution offering a wide array of academic programs and contributing significantly to research and development.
Historical Evolution
The inception of the University of Nairobi dates back to 1956, with the establishment of the Royal Technical College. The Royal Technical College of East Africa (RTCEA) welcomed its first cohort of students in October 1956. In 1961, the East Africa High Commission, acting on the recommendations of a working party that had reviewed the institution’s academic standards, elevated RTCEA to a university college. With this change came a new name, Royal College, Nairobi, making it the second university college in East Africa, following Makerere in Kampala, Uganda. The institution underwent a series of transformations, reflecting the changing educational landscape in Kenya and East Africa.
Key Milestones:
- 1956: Founded as the Royal Technical College.
- 1961: Transformed into Royal College, Nairobi, a constituent college of the University of London.
- 1964: Renamed University College Nairobi as part of the Federal University of East Africa.
- 1970: Became the independent University of Nairobi.
UoN officially became a university in 1970. Since adopting the name the University of Nairobi, the institution has expanded. In 1970, a college was started at the former Templer Barracks, Kenyatta University College, which later became Kenyatta University and later gave rise to Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology in 1988.
