Learning Support Services (LSS) and The Writing Center (TWC)
Located in the Nancy Thompson Learning Commons, Learning Support Services (LSS) and The Writing Center (TWC) offer multidisciplinary, holistic, and targeted academic support for both undergraduate and graduate students. These services are delivered through various modalities, including one-to-one tutoring, small group instruction, and coaching. Anchored in empathy and evidence-based practices, peer tutors are trained to understand students holistically as learners and design individualized support based on each student’s strengths and academic needs. LSS offers a comprehensive suite of academic support services designed to empower students throughout their academic journey. Services include:
- Subject Tutoring: Individualized support for a wide range of courses from experienced peer tutors. Tutors assist students with course content areas, as identified by the student. Additionally, the tutor reinforces additional academic skills, such as: organizing and developing ideas, building confidence, and personalized academic strategies.
- Academic Coaching: One-on-one work with a coach to develop personalized strategies for success.
- Writing Support: One-to-one writing support covering a variety of areas and assignments, including essay assignments, lab reports, cover letters, graduate school admissions essays, resumes, job applications, or any other writing piece. Writing tutors actively collaborate with students in examining students’ writing processes, challenges, and specified area identified by the student. Tutors help students reflect on their writing goals and offer them viable strategies for becoming skilled, confident academic writers.
- Public Speaking Skills: Guidance through the process from writing content, through practicing public presentation. Public Speaking tutors guide students through the process from writing content, through practicing public presentation. This service covers topics such as: dissertation defense, research presentations, conference presentations, speeches, and mock interviews.
- Supplemental Instruction (SI Sessions): Additional support in challenging STEM, accounting, and academic reading courses. SI sessions are led by highly successful undergraduate students who have excelled in those same courses. SI sessions are regularly-scheduled, informal review sessions that involve collaborative learning activities through which students can clarify course concepts and practice the types of study strategies that will help them truly master the information and skills required by the target course.
- Embedded Tutoring: Targeted writing support in specific General Education (GE) courses.
Math Support
Kean University provides extensive math support to students, recognizing the importance of quantitative skills in accounting.
- GE Math Support: Incorporated into GE Math sections, instructors provide coaching and feedback that guides students toward mastery of math skills in topics such as critical thinking and quantitative reasoning. Students and instructors collaborate on topics covered in class and work on real-world math problems. Students are highly encouraged to bring in their own questions to these interactive sessions. All School of General Studies (SGS) math courses offer GE Math support sessions for students. Instructors offer 2 to 5-hour long GE Math sessions each week for up to 10 student participants.
- The Math Lab: Located in GLAB 308, offers tutoring services to all students in math courses at the 1000-4000 level.
Library Services
Library Services aims to support students, faculty, and other members of the Kean community in their research, scholarship, creative works, and innovative use of technology. Digital and print collections, including OER materials, are selected to meet the teaching, learning, and research needs of students and faculty. You may also participate in tutoring in the Nancy Thompson Library Learning Commons to fulfill this course requirement if your schedule does not match with your professor’s hours.

Opportunities for Underrepresented Students in STEM

Cougar Connections Center of Social Work (CCCSW) offers supportive services designed to enhance and improve student well-being, daily life, and overall collegiate experience by providing campus and community services that assist and support students on their path to graduation. Our goal is to provide a holistic multifaceted approach to social work support services including but not limited to the following basic needs: Food, Shelter, and Clothing Resources; Emergency Financial Services; Case Management Support; Advocacy; Life Skills Development; Safe Space Support; Family Resources; and Career Enhancement.
Center For Veteran Student Success

Behavioral Intervention Team (KUBIT)
Kean University’s Behavioral Intervention Team’s mission is to maintain a safe, supportive, and healthy community for all Kean University students, faculty, and staff. KUBIT is a multidisciplinary team that provides caring support and collaboration through evidence-based risk assessment and interventions for any member of the Kean University community who may be exhibiting disruptive, distressed, changed, at-risk, and/or concerning behaviors. KUBIT serves six major functions for the University: provides consultation, education, and support to faculty, staff, and administration in assisting students who display concerning, at-risk, disruptive, distressed, or changed behaviors; gathers information to assess situations and behaviors involving referred students, recommends appropriate intervention strategies; connects students with needed campus and community resources; monitors the ongoing behavior of students who have concerning, at-risk, disruptive, distressed, or changed behaviors and identifies emerging behavioral and wellness trends within the student population. KUBIT is not responsible for emergencies. Faculty/staff can make a KUBIT referral by filing a report at KUBIT INCIDENT REPORT.

CAPS Academic Advisors
CAPS Academic Advisors are available to assist Freshmen, Sophomore, and Transfer Students (Freshmen & Sophomores) at Kean Union and Kean Online with their academic, professional, and campus engagement goals. During the academic semester, students are to meet with their CAPS Academic Advisor at least once to discuss their academic progress at Kean. Financial Aid and Scholarships: Funding Your Education

Financial Aid
All students are strongly encouraged to complete a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), which will improve their ability to receive needed funding through grants and other types of financial aid. Assists students with all processes of the financial aid process. The department holds workshops throughout the year for students to help them with the FASFA form. Students are assigned a Financial Aid Advisor based on their last name.

Travelearns
Pursue your degree while visiting and learning about a new part of the world through a Travelearn, Kean's short-term study abroad program. The Travelearns occur in the Spring and Summer terms, with locations and classes changing every year. The programs typically consist of lectures and excursions related to a particular topic. Travelearn programs are led by faculty who are experts in the respective program's field of study. Students should anticipate applying for a trip about 6 months in advance.
