Jared Curtis's Recruiting Journey: A Win for Georgia Over Oregon
The recruitment of Jared Curtis, the No. 1 quarterback in the 2026 class, has been a closely watched saga in the college football world. Ultimately, Curtis chose to sign with the Georgia Bulldogs, marking a significant victory for Kirby Smart's program and a setback for Dan Lanning and the Oregon Ducks.
Curtis's Decision: Georgia Over Oregon
Curtis, a highly sought-after prospect from Nashville Christian School, had initially committed to Georgia before reopening his recruitment and exploring other options. Oregon emerged as a strong contender during this second phase, with Lanning and offensive coordinator Will Stein making a concerted effort to woo the five-star quarterback to Eugene.
Despite the Ducks' efforts, Curtis ultimately reaffirmed his commitment to Georgia. He cited his strong relationship with offensive coordinator Mike Bobo and coach Kirby Smart as key factors in his decision. "Georgia speaks for itself," Curtis told On3. "I’ve built a relationship with Coach Bobo and Coach Smart. I think they’re a powerhouse and they have great coaches all around. They have the players up there and they’re very disciplined."
Oregon's Quarterback Development vs. Georgia's Track Record
Curtis's decision to choose Georgia over Oregon raises questions, particularly given the recent success of Oregon's quarterbacks under Lanning and Stein. In their short time with the Ducks, they have developed quarterbacks Bo Nix and Dillon Gabriel, both of whom earned Heisman Trophy presentations. Nix became a first-round NFL draft pick, and Gabriel was selected on the second day of the NFL Draft.
In contrast, Smart's tenure at Georgia has not been marked by similar quarterback development success. While former Georgia quarterback Jake Fromm played on several NFL teams, he was recently released by the Lions. This difference in quarterback development track records makes Curtis's decision an interesting one.

However, it's also worth noting that when Bobo was the offensive analyst at Georgia, he deserved much of the credit for the development of Matt Stafford, and that was well known by the Curtis family. In fact, Curtis is the closest prototype to Matt Stafford that Georgia has seen.
The Impact on Oregon's Recruiting Strategy
With Curtis heading to Georgia, Oregon is now tasked with finding another quarterback in the 2026 class. The Ducks had seemingly put all their eggs in the Curtis basket after quarterback prospect Jonas Williams flipped to USC. While Dante Moore may return after the coming season, Lanning and his staff will want to ensure they have a plan in place if he doesn't. Four-star quarterback Bowe Bentley could be an interesting option for the Ducks. The No. 7 quarterback in the 2026 class from Celina, Texas already has official visits set in place for LSU and Oklahoma, so the Ducks would need to move quickly.

The Ripple Effect on Other Recruits
Curtis's decision could also influence the recruitment of other top prospects, such as Jackson Cantwell, the No. 1 offensive tackle in the 2026 class. Cantwell has been closely following Curtis's recruitment and has been active on social media regarding the quarterback's decision.
The Current State of College Football Recruiting
Curtis's recruitment also highlights the evolving landscape of college football recruiting, with factors such as NIL (Name, Image, and Likeness) deals and the transfer portal playing increasingly significant roles. Some suggest that "House" money, or extra funding, is impacting the recruiting cycle, potentially leading to schools overpaying or overvaluing certain recruits.

The influence of NIL collectives and the potential for "exit fee clauses" in player contracts are also changing the dynamics of recruiting and player movement. The House settlement is a last-gasp attempt by the NCAA to remain relevant in big-time college football and basketball.
The Significance for Georgia
Curtis's commitment is a significant win for Georgia coach Kirby Smart, who has signed three five-star quarterbacks out of high school. Curtis would be the first five-star quarterback Georgia has signed since Prince Avenue Christian’s Brock Vandagriff in 2021. He transferred to Kentucky after the 2023 season and started for one season there. Georgia hasn’t signed a quarterback as highly ranked as Curtis since Justin Fields in 2018. Fields was named the nation’s No. 2 prospect behind Trevor Lawrence. Fields spent one season as a backup before transferring to Ohio State.
Smart signed Jacob Eason out of Washington state in 2016. He had originally committed to Mark Richt. Georgia won national championships in 2021 and 2022 with Stetson Bennett who came to the school as a walk-on, went to junior college and then transferred back. Jake Fromm was a top 50 prospect and a four-star quarterback who helped lead Georgia to the national title game in 2017. Carson Beck, a four-star prospect ranked No. 254 overall, quarterbacked Georgia to the SEC championship game in 2023 and 2024. The Bulldogs won last season.
Curtis's Fit in the Georgia Quarterback Room
The Bulldogs currently have four quarterbacks on the roster who came via signing classes. All could return in 2026, but that seems unlikely in this age of player movement. Gunner Stockton would be a redshirt senior, Ryan Puglisi a redshirt sophomore and Ryan Montgomery and Hezekiah Millender should be redshirt freshmen.
Nashville Christian coach Jeff Brothers believes Curtis's competitive nature will drive him to compete for a position and make an impact wherever he goes. Brothers also noted that Curtis graduating in December and arriving in January will help him adjust to college football, but there will still be a learning curve.

The Uncertainty of Recruiting
While Curtis has recommitted to Georgia, the recruiting process is far from over. As Brothers said, "there’s a long time before signing day. The world we live in, the dynamics of college football ever changing, there’s noting guaranteed until you put your name on a sheet of paper and even these days, heck, when you put your name on paper, you can still be gone by Christmas."
In fact, there was a projection that Curtis would commit to Vanderbilt, but that did not come to pass.
