Jamil Niner Student Pantry: A Comprehensive Guide for UNC Charlotte Students and Supporters

The Jamil Niner Student Pantry at UNC Charlotte is dedicated to supporting the health and well-being of its community by providing access to essential food and personal care items. This article serves as a comprehensive guide to the pantry, covering everything from eligibility and shopping procedures to donation guidelines and volunteer opportunities.

Who Can Shop at the Pantry?

Currently registered UNC Charlotte undergraduate and graduate students, as well as current employees, are eligible to shop at the pantry. The pantry utilizes a 'self-selection' model, empowering individuals to determine their need for assistance. As long as you are enrolled at UNC Charlotte, you qualify.

What Information Do I Need to Provide?

Students are required to complete an online form under the Appointments tab, providing their student ID number and the number of dependents (minors) in their household. The pantry does not ask invasive financial questions.

Appointment Scheduling and Walk-In Availability

It is highly recommended that students schedule appointments for Tuesdays and Thursdays. Walk-ins are specifically welcomed on Wednesdays between 11am - 3pm. Please note that available shopping appointments are limited each week.

To request diapers for dependent children, please fill out the diaper form the day before your appointment.

Cost and Location

Shopping at the pantry is completely free. The Jamil Niner Student Pantry is located at 1224 John Kirk Drive, Charlotte, NC. It's situated left from the bus stop and past the Adult Care Center. Please do not walk through the yard of the house next to the pantry.

Available Items

The pantry provides a variety of items, including:

  • Perishable and non-perishable food items
  • Personal hygiene products
  • Household items
  • Period products
  • Bread
  • Fresh produce
  • Frozen vegetables
  • Items specific to shoppers with dependents (small children)

Fresh items such as bread and fresh produce are available in limited quantities on a first-come-first-served basis.

Policy for Late Arrivals

Shoppers who arrive more than 15 minutes outside of their appointment time will be asked to wait until other on-time appointments have shopped. This policy is in place due to the increased shopping activity the pantry has experienced in recent semesters and to guarantee a smooth shopper experience for everyone.

Donations to the Pantry

The Jamil Niner Student Pantry relies on the generosity of donors to maintain its services. The pantry appreciates all donations of food, but requests that food donations be healthy to help support the students, faculty, staff, and families who depend on the pantry to meet their nutritional needs.

Accepted and Needed Items

Please refer to the pantry's list of needed/accepted items for specific details. All food items must be within their "Best by/Use by" dates to ensure food safety. The Pantry does not accept raw/frozen meats.

Donation Drop-off

To ensure food safety, all food donations should be dropped off during regular pantry business hours:

  • Tuesdays & Thursdays: 11am - 4:30pm
  • Wednesdays: 11am - 3pm

Staff can properly receive and process items during these hours. Leaving perishable food items in the Donation Drop Box or at the pantry during non-business hours presents food safety concerns that limit the pantry's ability to process and distribute these donations to student shoppers. Do not leave perishable food items at the pantry when the pantry is not open.

Non-food items such as toiletries can be left in the Donation Drop Box at the end of the driveway next to the garage door during business hours. The address is 1224 John Kirk Drive Charlotte, NC 28262.

Monetary Donations

Those interested in making a monetary donation can designate the Jamil Niner Student Pantry to make a direct donation.
