Harper Murray has quickly become a prominent figure in the world of collegiate volleyball. Her exceptional talent and dedication have earned her numerous accolades and recognition. This article delves into her career, highlighting her achievements, challenges, and future prospects.
Freshman Year Success
Nebraska volleyball star outside hitter Harper Murray could not have had a better freshman season for the five-time national champions, vaulting herself into national stardom by winning the Big Ten Freshman of the Year, garnering All-Big Ten First Team honors, and being named an AVCA All-America Third Team member. Despite falling short to Texas in the national championship match, Murray had one of the best freshman campaigns in program history.
Accolades and Achievements
As a freshman, Murray's performance was nothing short of outstanding. She secured the Big Ten Freshman of the Year title, earned a spot on the All-Big Ten First Team, and was honored as an AVCA All-America Third Team member. These accolades underscore her immediate impact on the team and her potential for future success.Murray ended the season with the highest kills per set average by a Husker freshman since Kadie Rolfzen (3.46) in 2013. She also notched double-digit kills in 23 matches and had eight double-doubles on the season. Murray averaged 3.67 kills per set on .343 hitting with 2.33 digs per set in the first three matches of her career. She received Big Ten Freshman of the Week accolades again on Sept. 18 after 12 kills on .417 hitting with six digs, four blocks and three aces at Stanford, and 17 kills on .308 hitting with 10 digs and three blocks vs. Kentucky. Murray recorded 17 kills on .368 hitting in a 3-1 win at Indiana on Sept. 30 and was named Big Ten Freshman of the Week for the third time after her performances at Purdue and Indiana. She put down 14 kills with 15 digs in a 3-2 win over No. 1 Wisconsin.

She added 10 kills, 12 digs, and four blocks in the regional final sweep of No. 7 Wisconsin and was named the NCAA Lincoln Regional Most Outstanding Player. She recorded 20 kills, 15 digs, three aces, and a career-high six blocks in the NCAA Semifinal against No. 2 Penn State and was named to the NCAA Championship All-Tournament Team.

Murray led the Huskers with a career-best 3.54 kills per set on a career-high .295 hitting percentage. As a six-rotation player, she also contributed 2.16 digs per set, 0.60 blocks per set, and a team-high 34 aces. She totaled a career-high 4.21 points per set for the season.

Career Milestones
Murray finished the season with 1,181 career kills, ranking 19th all-time in school history and 10th in the rally-scoring era. Her 109 career aces are the sixth-most at NU in the rally-scoring era.
Notable Games
Murray was named to the NCAA Lincoln Regional All-Tournament Team after a career-high 25 kills, nine digs, three aces, and two blocks against No. 6 Texas A&M. She was named Big Ten Player of the Week on Oct. 13 after 16 kills on 25 error-free swings (.640) at No. 12 Purdue. She had 23 kills on .340 hitting with a season-high 15 digs and five blocks in a 3-2 win over No. 7 Kentucky on Aug. 31. She notched 17 kills and 10 digs in a 3-2 win at No. 18 Creighton on Sept. 16. She posted 15 kills to open the season in a 3-1 win against No. 3 Pittsburgh on Aug. 22.
Overcoming Off-Court Challenges
Unfortunately, what followed was a turbulent offseason for the Michigan native, having multiple run-ins with the law. She was suspended from the Nebraska Spring Match in April but will face no suspension for the upcoming season.
Team Support
Murray made her first appearance in a press conference setting since the national championship ended last December this week. When asked how she felt about her teammates' support during her offseason, Murray looked in the direction of a Nebraska spokesman before shaking her head. Teammate and co-captain Merritt Beason stepped in to provide an answer.
“One thing that our team focuses on a lot is understanding each other and in certain moments, maybe Harper needs a little bit more. In certain moments, maybe Harper needs to be alone, things like that,” Beason said. “Each of us are all different and all unique in our own ways. For us, this entire summer, it’s just been continuing to build those relationships. Not just her, for all of us. Continuing to figure out what each person needs at each moment."

I think we’ve done a really good job of helping Harper through all the stuff that she’s had to deal with, but also that’s just the culture of Nebraska volleyball. It’s not just been her.

“I think working on the little things and staying disciplined because that’s something coach (Cook) is always on us for,” Murray said. “Other than that, off the court, just building relationships like Merritt said.”
High School Career
