Understanding UNC Greensboro Tuition: A Comprehensive Guide
Choosing a college is a significant investment, and understanding the costs associated with tuition is crucial. UNC Greensboro (UNCG) aims to provide students with an excellent education at a reasonable cost. This article breaks down the various aspects of UNCG tuition, fees, and financial aid options to help prospective and current students navigate the financial landscape.
Cost of Attendance: An Overview
The Cost of Attendance is an estimated budget of what a student may spend over the course of the academic year. This estimate is based on local cost of living calculations and surveys of the student body. It's important to note that this figure is an estimate, and actual expenses may vary depending on individual circumstances.
Tuition Rates: In-State vs. Out-of-State
UNCG offers competitive tuition rates, particularly for in-state undergraduate students. Full-time, in-state undergraduate students living on campus can expect to pay at least $1,000 less than the average cost of attendance at other North Carolina public universities. Out-of-state and graduate tuition costs are also well below national averages.
As of the most recent data, the school's in-state tuition and fees are $7,662, while out-of-state tuition and fees are $24,014.
Tuition rates are reviewed by the UNCG’s Board of Trustees and the Board of Governors of the University of North Carolina System and set annually by the North Carolina legislature.

Residency Requirements for In-State Tuition
To qualify for in-state tuition and state financial aid, students must apply for official residency determination through www.NCresidency.org. Those who aren’t eligible for classification as a North Carolina “resident for tuition purposes” will be charged out-of-state tuition and not be given consideration for State financial aid. Students can get more information about residency and complete a determination at www.NCresidency.org.
Understanding Tuition and Fees
Tuition is used to support a variety of functions at UNCG, including classroom instruction, student services, maintenance of facilities and infrastructure, need-based aid, and institutional support. Tuition is also supplemented by appropriations from the North Carolina General Assembly.
Required student fees support programs, services, and facilities on campus and online for which state funds are not available and/or cannot be used. Students enrolled in main campus programs can expect these required fees. Depending on student type and major, additional fees may apply.
Here's a breakdown of what the fee covers:
- 85% of the athletics budget.
- Pays for debt incurred on capital projects which cannot be built using state funds. For example: UNCG’s soccer and baseball stadiums, the Leonard J. Kaplan Center for Wellness, the Elliott University Center renovation, and the Anna M.
- Supports the Spartan Chariot campus transportation shuttle system (Weekday Loop, Spartan Village Express, and the Evening Safety Shuttle) which operates during the fall and spring semesters.
- Supports health, counseling, and wellness services at the Anna M. Gove Student Health Center.
Online students pay a different set of mandatory fees charged per credit hour.

Online Programs and Tuition
Online programs offer students an additional value when students receive instruction outside the state of North Carolina. To be eligible for the online tuition rate, students must meet specific criteria:
- Have an official non-resident Residency Determination Service designation prior to the schedule adjustment period for a given term.
- Are admitted to and enrolled in online course(s) in an approved online program.
- Reside outside of the state of North Carolina.
Following an official Residency Determination Service (RDS) designation, an attribute (ONNC) is added to the student’s record automatically within 48-72 hours of UNCG receiving the determination. This attribute will result in tuition being assessed at the Outside NC tuition rate.
Billing and Payment Information
Student bills are issued after registration each semester. Beginning Summer 2023 and forward, the payment deadline will typically occur before classes begin for the semester. Students view their bills via the Student Account Center, which is accessed on the Student tab in UNCGenie. They cannot view their bill or authorize users on UNCGenie without accessing the Student Account Center.
Financial Aid and Scholarships
Seventy-one percent of first-year students receive need-based financial aid, and the average net price for federal loan recipients is $10,907.
The first step to paying for school for most students is applying for financial aid. UNCG financial aid is primarily need-based and may include grants, work-study, and/or loans. UNCG awards a variety of scholarships to select new and current students every year based on financial need and academic merit. Many scholarships are awarded automatically as part of the admissions process for students who apply early.

Graduate Assistantships and Fellowships
Graduate Assistantships are paid positions that support the teaching, research, or service mission of UNC Greensboro and are reserved for students pursuing graduate degrees. Fellowships may be offered by UNC Greensboro or may be part of nationally competitive grants, scholarships, and similar funding opportunities for students.
Fixed Tuition Program
UNCG participates in the Fixed Tuition Program, where all UNC System institutions fix tuition for up to eight consecutive semesters (excluding summer sessions) for North Carolina residents who meet certain requirements.
