The University of Central Florida (UCF), a public metropolitan research university in Orlando, has grown into one of the largest universities in the nation. A Sprawling Campus: Acreage and Locations

From Humble Beginnings to a Thriving Institution
UCF's origins trace back to the early 1960s, fueled by the growing importance of the space program near Cape Canaveral. In 1963, the Florida Legislature authorized the creation of a new state university in East Central Florida, initially named Florida Technological University (FTU). The university's mission was to educate students for space-age careers in engineering and technology.
The Board of Regents purchased 1,000 acres of land in northeast Orlando in 1964 for $500,000. Local residents contributed an additional 227 acres and raised over $1 million to support the acquisition. Charles Millican, the university's first president, chose the name Florida Technological University and co-designed the Pegasus seal. He also established the university's slogan, "Reach for the Stars," and the campus's concentric-circle layout.
FTU held its inaugural classes on October 7, 1968. In 1978, Trevor Colbourn became the university's second president and recognized the diversification of academic programs beyond technology and science. He changed the name to the University of Central Florida to reflect this broader mission. Colbourn also established the university's honors program, its first satellite campus, and the Central Florida Research Park.

John C. Hitt, UCF's fourth president, served from 1992 to 2018 and oversaw a period of significant growth. UCF increased its academic and research standing and evolved into a traditional research university. Enrollment grew substantially, and the university added an on-campus football stadium, a new basketball arena, more on-campus housing, and the UCF College of Medicine at Lake Nona. Alexander Cartwright is the fifth and current president of UCF.

UCF offers 112 bachelor's, 98 master's, 34 research doctorates, 3 professional doctorates, and 3 specialist degree programs. The university leads all universities in Florida in conferring more than 18,000 degrees a year. UCF is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.
The university fosters research among its thirteen academic colleges and schools and collaborates with corporations such as Lockheed Martin, Disney, Boeing, and SpaceX. UCF researchers received $237.4 million in fiscal year 2025 for funded research.
Student Life and Traditions
UCF has a large and diverse student body, with over 70,000 students. The university has over 400 registered student organizations, intramural sports, and an active Student Government. Spirit Splash, a homecoming tradition, is the only time students are allowed into the Reflecting Pond.

For the 2020-21 academic year, undergraduate tuition costs were $212.28 per credit hour for in-state students and $748.89 per credit hour for out-of-state students. Graduate tuition costs were $369.65 per credit hour for in-state students and $1,194.05 per credit hour for out-of-state students. Tuition for the medical school is $25,490 for both in-state and out-of-state students.

UCF has faced challenges and controversies, including the misuse of state funds for construction projects. In 2018, the university admitted to misappropriating money intended for educational expenses to build Trevor Colbourn Hall. This led to the resignation of CFO Bill Merck. An investigation revealed that UCF had misspent or planned to misspend over $85 million between 2013 and 2018.
