Unlocking Opportunities: The Enduring Benefits of High School Alumni Associations
High school alumni associations play a vital role in fostering community, supporting current students, and providing lasting benefits for graduates. These organizations serve as a bridge between the past and the present, connecting alumni with their alma mater and with each other, while simultaneously contributing to the school's ongoing success. From scholarships and networking opportunities to legacy building and community involvement, the advantages of engaging with a high school alumni association are numerous and far-reaching.
Supporting Future Generations: Scholarships and Financial Aid
One of the most significant contributions of high school alumni associations is their commitment to supporting current students through scholarships and financial aid. Many associations, like the San Fernando High School Alumni Association, prioritize awarding scholarships to deserving seniors.
For instance, the San Fernando High School Alumni Association, founded in May 2002, exemplifies this commitment. Its purpose is threefold: to support the vision and mission of the school, to provide a support base for current SFHS students by awarding scholarships to deserving seniors, and to provide a networking structure for all SFHS alumni. Each year, the association awards scholarships to graduating seniors, with larger amounts allocated to those attending four-year universities and smaller awards for those attending community colleges or technical schools.
The USC Alumni Association and its related entities award nearly $4 million in alumni scholarships to continuing students each year. Individuals must apply for scholarships during the academic year prior to the year of funding. These scholarships are awarded annually by USC regional alumni around the country. SCion Scholarships are awarded annually by the USC Alumni Association to continuing undergraduate students. Trojan Women’s Network scholarships are awarded annually by the Trojan Women’s Network through the USC Alumni Association to continuing undergraduate students. Please note that awards are competitive. Awards may vary based on awarding group and can range from $1,000-$3,000+ per year. Alumnae scholarships are merit-based and awarded based on the requirements set forth by each group, which are listed below. Awards will also be based on demonstrated academic strengths, leadership, and community involvement.
These scholarships can be a game-changer for students, helping them to afford tuition, books, and other educational expenses. By investing in the next generation, alumni associations contribute to a brighter future for both the students and the community as a whole.

Building a Strong Network: Connecting Alumni and Facilitating Opportunities
Beyond financial support, alumni associations provide invaluable networking opportunities for their members. These networks can be instrumental in career advancement, mentorship, and personal growth. Alumni events, such as reunions, career fairs, and social gatherings, create platforms for alumni to connect with one another, share their experiences, and forge lasting relationships.
For example, Buckley Alumni Association is 4,300 strong and fellow Griffins take pride in their school. Our mission, with the support of the alumni engagement board, is to continue to fuel that appetite by expanding engagement and service opportunities for alumni around the globe and to encourage your continued involvement to ensure the Griffini community remains robust, vibrant and supportive.
The Alumni Engagement Board (AEB) is a 29-member group of energetic and dedicated alumni whose mission and purpose is to engage and serve all alumni; nurture lifelong connections between the school, its graduates, and students; and champion goodwill and philanthropic support for Buckley. They help develop strategies for connecting, engaging, growing, and retaining an engaged and diverse alumni community through 6 AEB committees, and help fulfill its goals in accordance with the school’s mission and vision.
These connections can lead to job opportunities, internships, and valuable advice from seasoned professionals. Moreover, alumni networks can provide a sense of belonging and camaraderie, reminding graduates that they are part of a larger community that extends beyond their high school years.
Giving Back to the School: Supporting Programs and Initiatives
Alumni associations often play a crucial role in supporting various school programs and initiatives. This support can take many forms, including fundraising for specific projects, volunteering time and expertise, and advocating for the school's interests. By giving back to their alma mater, alumni help to ensure that current and future students have access to the resources and opportunities they need to succeed.

Preserving History and Tradition: Maintaining a Sense of Community
High school alumni associations also serve as custodians of the school's history and traditions. They often maintain archives of historical documents, photographs, and memorabilia, ensuring that the school's legacy is preserved for future generations. Alumni events, such as reunions and homecoming celebrations, provide opportunities to reminisce about the past and celebrate the school's unique culture.
By preserving history and tradition, alumni associations help to maintain a sense of community and belonging among graduates. They remind alumni of their shared experiences and the values they learned during their time in high school. This sense of connection can be a powerful force, inspiring alumni to stay involved with their alma mater and support its ongoing success.
