Choosing where to live during your freshman year at High Point University is a significant decision. Your dorm will be more than just a place to sleep; it will be a hub for studying, socializing, and creating lasting memories. This guide provides an overview of the freshman dorm options available at HPU, helping you find the perfect fit for your needs and preferences.
Finding Your Place at HPU: An Overview of Freshman Housing
All residential properties at High Point University are considered on campus, ensuring a convenient and immersive college experience. From traditional residence halls to suite-style and apartment-style living, HPU offers a variety of options to suit different lifestyles.
Applying for Housing: Key Dates and Requirements
The housing application process is an important step in securing your preferred living arrangements. Here's what you need to know:
- Enrollment Deposit: A $500 enrollment deposit must be paid prior to completing your Housing Application.
- Application Opening Date: The Housing Application typically opens on January 14th for all first-year students. For example, the Housing Application opened at 9:00 AM on January 14, 2025, for all first-year students.
- Housing Contract: The housing contract must be signed before the application is considered complete. If the student is under 18 years of age, a parent or legal guardian is required to complete the proxy form.
- Honest Survey Responses: Students should complete the survey and answer the questionnaire as openly and honestly as possible to help Housing Services find the best match.
Housing Assignments: How They're Determined
Housing assignments for first-year students are determined based on the admissions decision type and the date the enrollment deposit is paid. While every attempt is made to place students in their top preferences, this is not always possible.

Traditional Residence Halls
- Women's Complex (McEwen, North, Wesley, and Yadkin Residence Halls): These halls offer traditional double occupancy rooms with hall-style bathrooms in North, Wesley, Yadkin, and the third floor of McEwen. McEwen also features select double occupancy suite-style bedrooms with a shared jack-and-jill bathroom on the first and second floor. Living in McEwen provides convenient access to the library, Slane Student Center, and many academic buildings. As one student shared, "Living in McEwen I was able to be near the library, Slane, and close to almost all of my classes."
Suite-Style Living
- R. G. Wanek Center: This center offers suite-style double occupancy rooms with jack-and-jill style shared bathrooms, as well as select single occupancy bedrooms with jack-and-jill style shared bathrooms.
- University Center 2: Similar to Wanek Center, University Center 2 provides suite-style double occupancy rooms with jack-and-jill style shared bathrooms and select single occupancy bedrooms with jack-and-jill style shared bathrooms. One student raved about the location of UC2: "The UC isn’t far from anything on campus and coming home to this building, sitting up on a hill, makes me smile every time. I couldn’t be happier with where I am living and wouldn’t trade it for anywhere else."
- Blessing Hall: Blessing offers three or four-bedroom suites. A resident noted, "It’s great having the privacy of my own room while still being able to hang out with my friends in the living room. One of my favorite things about Blessing is it is easy to study and take charge of your academics at hand." Another student added, "You can get away from your room by just going one door down and feel like you’re in a whole other building. I absolutely love living in Blessing."
Apartment-Style Living
- Wilson Hall Apartments: These apartments feature double occupancy rooms with a shared common area and bathroom in each unit.
Honors Housing
- Finch Hall: Honors Scholar students are typically required to live in Finch for their first and sophomore years. Finch offers single rooms. One student shared, "Deciding to live in Finch was one of the best decisions I could have made. I love the set up of having a roommate and sharing a bathroom with another room. Living in a suite made it easier for me to get to know at least two other girls besides my roommate." Another student noted, "Living on the Honors floor has been one of my best experiences here at High Point. You have never experienced any greater educational bond with a group of people than my new found friends on the honors floor. The honors floor has been my refuge from an often chaotic college life." The honors college provides names of first-year students who are required to live in Finch to the Office of Student Life Housing team.
Understanding Housing Tiers
HPU utilizes a housing tier system, which may influence the cost of your room. For example:
- Housing Tier 2: Includes three or four-bedroom suites in Blessing, single rooms in Finch and McEwen, and double occupancy rooms in University Center 2 and R.G. Wanek Center.
- Housing Tier 5: Includes single rooms in University Center 2 and R.G. Wanek Center.
It's important to note that the published rates are preliminary and subject to change. Final rates are typically approved at the March Board Meeting preceding the fall semester for which the new rates apply.
Additional Resources
- Waitlists: If you are not initially assigned to your preferred dorm, you are welcome to add yourself to any other waitlists via the Housing Portal on a first-come, first-served basis. Student Life will manage waitlists until the end of July.
- Accessible Housing: High Point University is committed to providing accessible housing for students with disabilities. Housing accommodations ensure that students with disabilities have equal access to college education and university life. Students who are registered with the Office of Accessibility Resources and Services (OARS) and approved for a housing accommodation(s) will be offered a housing assignment from Student Life that addresses the functional limitations of their disability and meets the requirements of their accommodation(s). If students accept the accommodation(s), they will be assigned to that location at a standard room rate. Students who decline their accommodations offer will participate in the general housing selection process. You can find more information online about accessible housing at www.highpoint.edu/oars/housingaccommodations.
The Roommate Experience
Living in a dorm often means sharing a space with a roommate. This can be a rewarding experience, providing opportunities for friendship and personal growth. One student shared, "I share a common area with 3 girls, and we enjoy cooking together. We share the bathrooms, but each have our own room, so its the best of both worlds. Since I am an only child, the dorm has given me the experience of living with girls that are becoming like sisters. Its fun to have friends to talk to every day, but sometimes we do argue. Mostly about keeping the place clean!"
The Springs: An Exceptional Option
While not specifically mentioned as a freshman dorm, The Springs deserve mention for its exceptional staff. According to one resident, "The staff at The Springs are truly amazing! They are so kind and helpful! They made my stay enjoyable and it felt like home. They actually care about their residents. I love that they offered to feed my pet while I was away for the weekend."
Embracing Dorm Life
Dorms are truly a wonderful part of the college experience. As one student put it, "Everyone at some point or another has their door open and when walking through the hall everyone is so friendly. This is perfect for rainy days if you don’t want to leave!"
