Granite Education Foundation Programs: Empowering Students and Strengthening Communities
The Granite Education Foundation plays a vital role in supporting students and schools within the Granite School District. By providing essential resources and opportunities, the Foundation helps to reduce barriers to learning and ensure a more equitable education for all students. This article explores the various programs and initiatives undertaken by the Granite Education Foundation, highlighting their impact on students' lives and the community as a whole.
Providing for Basic Needs
Many students face challenges outside the classroom that can significantly impact their ability to learn. The Granite Education Foundation recognizes these challenges and offers programs designed to meet students' basic needs, ensuring they come to school ready to focus on their education.
One of the most impactful ways the Foundation addresses these needs is through the provision of essential supplies. For instance, the Foundation provides clothing, shoes, hygiene kits, and school supplies to students in need. A poignant example illustrates the transformative effect of this support: a family of four elementary-aged children, experiencing chronic homelessness and attending multiple schools in a single year, received these vital resources from the Foundation. These children, who previously lacked possessions of their own, were given new clothes, shoes, backpacks, and supplies to share.
- Student Weekend Kits: These kits are designed for students in need, providing them with essential items to take home for a night or weekend.
- Snack Kits: Teachers, administrators, and social workers distribute snack kits to students in need, ensuring they have access to nourishment throughout the day.
- Hair Kits: Recognizing that many students lack access to proper hair care, the Foundation provides hair kits containing the necessary tools to help students maintain personal hygiene and boost their confidence.
- Clothing and Infant Supplies: New clothing is a heavily requested item from school staff. The Granite Education Foundation works hard to provide this resource to all schools. Whether it be for a student whose shoes are coming apart due to wear, a family who recently moved who doesn't have coats for Utah's cold winters, or for school personnel to have on hand when students have accidents at school, Granite Education Foundation works hard to provide this resource to all schools.
- Hygiene and Lice Kits: Personal hygiene education is an important piece of growing up. The Foundation affords schools access to hygiene kits, feminine hygiene items, and lice kits. Hygiene kits may be distributed to an entire classroom for a lesson or several may be given out to a family in need to alleviate their financial burden.
- Backpacks and School Supplies: In reducing barriers to learning, Granite Education Foundation believes students should have the basic necessities of learning in the classroom. Equity and equal access to opportunity are a major priority of our programming. Many schools request enough backpacks filled with school supplies for their entire student populace and make them available at back-to-school registration nights, so anyone who needs the resource has access. At the same time, struggling families who recently moved to Utah or from another district may receive these backpacks to level the playing field for those new students.
By addressing these fundamental needs, the Granite Education Foundation creates a more supportive and equitable learning environment for all students.
Supporting Academic Enrichment and Extracurricular Activities
Beyond providing basic necessities, the Granite Education Foundation invests in programs that enrich students' educational experiences and expand their opportunities. These initiatives range from funding arts programs to supporting academic achievement and providing access to transportation.

- Arts Programs: The Foundation recognizes the importance of arts education in fostering creativity and enhancing students' overall development. For example, Ella Murray was able to implement new music/art program for PK-3rd. The funds also support the JH/HS academic achievement program offering opportunities for the upper grades to learn more about the arts. Ella wrote a grant proposal that she presented to Granite Educational Enrichment Foundation for $3300.00 to establish this program. The foundation trustees were excited to fund this opportunity for our students. Donations made to GEEF by alumni and friends of Granite Schools made this presentation possible. GEEF has supported numerous and varied programs both on and off campus. Art - Jesus Moroles, world renowned, granite sculptor. Linda Spears Jr. Science - Mars Rover presentation Dr. Holland C.
- Grant Programs: Teachers can submit requests for grants for class programs/projects, field trips, equipment, books and other supplemental materials.
- UTA Fare Pay Cards: UTA Fare Pay Cards are an important resource requested by social workers and counselors across the District. Monthly bus passes allow students who live far away from District bus lines transportation to and from school. Students who participate in afterschool activities or need transportation to work to support their family utilize this resource as well. Alleviating the burden of transportation on struggling families and students directly impacts their opportunity to learn.
- Vision Assistance: Vision exams and eyeglasses are available through Granite Education Foundation for students and families who are unable to cover the cost. Students without insurance or unable to replace a broken pair can count on school nurses to put in requests, so students are able to see the board and teacher clearly!
These programs demonstrate the Foundation's commitment to providing students with a well-rounded education and opportunities to explore their interests and talents.
Fostering Community Engagement and Partnerships
The Granite Education Foundation understands that strong community partnerships are essential to its success. By engaging with alumni, local businesses, and other organizations, the Foundation expands its reach and amplifies its impact.
- Alumni Engagement: The Foundation actively seeks to involve alumni in supporting its mission. One example is the "Operation Panther Cubs" campaign, which aims to construct a new Panther Cub Den. As of June 24, 2024, the campaign had garnered over $131,000 in contributions from more than 100 donors. This project kicked off during mid May 2023, with the main objective to establish a network of alumni contacts who would, in turn, assist in soliciting fellow alumni/friends to supplement funds needed to construct a new Panther Cub Den.
- Shop-A-Thon: The DISCOVER and Kohl's Shop-A-Thon is a back-to-school shopping spree for over 400 students across the Granite School District! The Foundation is lucky to partner with several partner organizations to put on a major party and provide every student in attendance with a sizeable Kohl's gift card.
- Deseret Industries Vouchers: These vouchers are provided through the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints Humanitarian Service donations. This donation allows social workers to submit a request for assistance. These requests can be turned into a voucher for shopping at any Deseret Industries store. For families struggling to furnish a new apartment, students without beds, or students needing additional clothing items to what we can provide, these are an excellent resource.
These collaborations demonstrate the power of collective action in supporting students and strengthening the community.
