About George Washington Carver
George Washington Carver, an iconic figure in American history, overcame immense challenges as an African American student, scholar, and inventor. Born into slavery in the 1860s, Carver faced significant adversity from an early age. Carver's passion for learning led him to seek education at various institutions, even though discrimination and racism posed constant obstacles. He encountered numerous setbacks, as many institutions denied him admission due to his race. Nonetheless, he persisted and eventually earned acceptance to the Simpson College in Iowa. Carver's academic journey continued as he pursued his graduate studies at Iowa State Agricultural College (now Iowa State University). GWCSL Scholarship details
Up to 100 full-tuition scholarships are awarded to incoming undergraduate US first-year students directly out of high school as part of the George Washington Carver Scholastic Leadership (GWCSL) Scholarship program. This award opportunity is available to students enrolling at Iowa State for Summer or Fall 2025. Students will be notified by April 2026 if they are selected to receive the GWCSL Full-Tuition Scholarship. The scholarship is renewable for an additional three years (for a total of four years or eight semesters of undergraduate study).
Basic Eligibility Criteria
To be eligible for the GWCSL Scholarship, applicants must meet the following criteria:

- First-Year Student Status: Be a new, direct out-of-high-school student for the entry term of Summer 2026 or Fall 2026. Prospective students who have been out of high school for over one year and have not gone to college are not eligible.
- Citizenship: Be a U.S. Citizen or Permanent Resident.
- FAFSA Submission: A FAFSA must be submitted by the priority deadline of February 1, 2026.
Renewal Requirements
The scholarship is renewable for an additional three years (for a total of four years or eight semesters of undergraduate study), provided the student:
- Maintains a cumulative 2.50 Iowa State grade point average.
- Completes 24 new credit hours each academic year at the university.
- Attends all required meetings, programming, and events.
- Remains continuously enrolled.
- Enrolls in and successfully completes the UST 106 and UST 205 courses.
Essay Requirements
Applicants are required to submit essays addressing the following topics:
- Essay 1: Describe your leadership experience and/or significant participation in an organization(s) open to all but whose mission seeks to advance the success and opportunities of populations historically underserved in higher education.
- Essay 2: As an African American student and scholar in the later 19th century/early 20th century, George Washington Carver's life and work demonstrate triumph through adversity and unjust systems. George Washington Carver exemplified how education and the advancement of art, science, and humanities could improve the human condition. How might your academic and professional goals honor Carver’s legacy and positively impact the human condition?
- Essay 3: George Washington Carver was advised to attend Iowa State by his professor at Simpson College specifically to enhance his interest in science and agronomy. Reflecting on your background, academic/school experiences, and life experiences, explain how an education from Iowa State University with students from a wide array of backgrounds will uniquely contribute to your academic success?
Academic Achievement Awards
Iowa State offers recognition awards to students who fulfill specific academic requirements. These awards are available to students enrolling for the Fall of 2026.
GPA and Test Score Requirements
- Grade Point Average (GPA): Minimum cumulative high school GPA (4-point scale) rounded to the nearest hundredth or second decimal place. Iowa State uses a weighted GPA if it is a school-wide policy and the weighted GPA is listed on the final official transcript for all students. We accept weighted GPA, provided the school’s weighted grading system does not award more than one additional quality point to the grade earned in weighted courses.
- Test Score: Minimum ACT composite or minimum SAT Total (Reading and Writing+Math) is used. We accept a student’s best composite score. If more than one test is reported, a superscore will be calculated using all individual tests for which we have official results.
Important Dates and Deadlines
- Priority Date: March 1. Apply immediately to be considered for remaining scholarship funds.
- Final Transcript and Test Score: Awards are offered based on preliminary or self-reported academic information, but all awards are contingent upon receipt of the official, final high school transcript and test score verifying the requirements have been met. The award will be withdrawn if all requirements have not been fulfilled.
Award Details
- Students will be offered the highest award value they qualify to receive based on their cumulative GPA to the second decimal.
- Awards can be updated during the year if their GPA or test score improves.
- An award will be adjusted if the final GPA changes from the GPA reported at the time of admission/application.
First-Year Student Status
- A student must enroll at Iowa State University for the fall semester immediately following high school graduation to qualify for a first-year student award; a student who has attempted college coursework following high school graduation (with the exception of the summer term) is not eligible for first-year student awards. Students enrolling for spring term can be eligible as long as they have not taken college courses after high school graduation.
Eligibility with Other Awards
- These awards are not tuition specific. They can be used toward a student’s total University bill and be combined with scholarships offered by an undergraduate college, department, or the Office of Student Financial Aid. Awards may be reduced or eliminated if the total award amount from all sources of aid exceeds the cost of attendance.
Renewal Requirements
- To renew these awards the student must remain continuously enrolled at Iowa State University on a full-time basis in good academic standing with a minimum of 12 credits per semester, be assessed resident tuition and maintain a minimum 2.50 cumulative grade point average. These awards are available during fall and spring semesters only, not during the summer term.
