Navigating George Mason University: A Guide to Shuttle Routes and Sustainable Transportation
George Mason University (GMU) offers a comprehensive shuttle system, along with other green transportation options, to facilitate convenient and sustainable commuting for its students, faculty, and staff. This article provides an overview of the shuttle routes, focusing on the F50 route, and highlights other eco-friendly transportation alternatives available at Mason.
The F50 Shuttle Route: Connecting Ballston-MU Station and George Mason University
The F50 shuttle route is a vital link connecting Ballston-MU Station with George Mason University's Fairfax campus. This route serves several key locations, making it a popular choice for commuters and students alike.
Route Description
The F50 operates along Route 29, passing through the Pan Am Shopping Center, the Mosaic District, and the Dunn Loring-Merrifield Station. It continues through downtown Falls Church and the E Falls Church Station, eventually reaching Washington Boulevard into the Arlington neighborhood of Westover. The F50 essentially mirrors the path of the former 2A route, and the former 2B route between Ballston-MU Station and Route 29/Blake Lane, offering a familiar and reliable transportation option for those who previously utilized those routes.
Frequency
While the exact frequency may vary, the F50 typically runs every 30 minutes or more. It's advisable to check the real-time shuttle tracking system or the official GMU transportation website for the most up-to-date schedule information. The map displays all stops for a weekday route in one direction. A list of all possible stops in both directions is available for detailed planning.
Other Mason Shuttle Routes
Beyond the F50, George Mason University operates five additional shuttle routes catering to various on- and off-campus destinations. These routes provide access to key locations such as the Vienna Metro, Burke Centre VRE, regional malls, and the Science and Technology Campus (formerly Prince William Campus).

Key Features of Mason Shuttles
All Mason shuttles, along with the CUE Bus, are free for individuals with a Mason ID. This makes them an accessible and affordable transportation option for students and employees. Furthermore, all shuttles are equipped with bike racks, encouraging multi-modal transportation and catering to cyclists.
Construction and Detours
It's important to be aware of ongoing construction projects that may impact shuttle routes and accessibility. Through approximately August 22, there will be some detours and lane closures on the northwest part of the Fairfax Campus as Patriot Circle is rebuilt to the south of its current location between George Mason Boulevard and Aquia Creek Lane. The George Mason Boulevard entrance to campus is also closed this summer as part of the construction of the Petersen Family College of Health and Human Services Building. Additionally, through the end of August, the Sandy Creek shuttle stop will be closed as the Transit Center project begins construction. This new transit center, which is financed by Fairfax County, will quadruple bus capacity at the main shuttle hub.
Sustainable Transportation Options
George Mason University is committed to promoting sustainable transportation practices. In addition to the shuttle system, Mason offers several other green transportation options.
