Navigating Parking at George Mason University: A Comprehensive Guide

Parking at a large university like George Mason can sometimes feel like navigating a maze. This guide aims to provide a comprehensive overview of parking regulations, options, and alternative transportation methods available to students, faculty, and visitors at George Mason University, using information available.

Parking Permit Information

A valid Mason parking permit is required to park on campus, or you may pay for parking in the visitor parking areas. Parking permits will go on sale on Wednesday, July 22 at parking.gmu.edu. Students who join Zimride, Mason’s free rideshare network, will be able to buy a parking permit two days early on Monday, July 20.

Winter Break Parking

During designated periods, such as the one that included Sunday, January 23, 2022, students may park in the Student General permit parking areas at all times while displaying a valid Mason parking permit. This includes the non-restricted parking spaces in Lots A, C, K, L, M, O, P, PV and the General permit area of the Rappahannock Parking Deck (Levels 2 & 2 with the exception of the segregated visitor area). All other parking areas designated by signage will still be enforced. If your student is planning to leave their vehicle on campus during Winter Break, they should park it in the General permit areas of the Rappahannock Parking deck and not on a surface lot in case of inclement weather.

Understanding Parking Regulations

It's crucial to understand the specific parking regulations to avoid tickets or towing. Pay close attention to signage in each parking area, as restrictions can vary. Certain lots and spaces may be reserved for specific permit types or have time limits.

Alternative Transportation Options

George Mason University encourages the use of alternative transportation methods to reduce traffic congestion and promote sustainability.

Shuttle Services

Mason offers a comprehensive shuttle system with multiple routes serving various on- and off-campus destinations, including the Vienna Metro, Burke Centre VRE, regional malls, and the Science and Technology Campus (formerly Prince William Campus). All shuttles and the CUE Bus are free with Mason ID and are equipped with a bike rack. Through the end of August, the Sandy Creek shuttle stop will be closed as the Transit Center project begins construction. This new transit center, which is financed by Fairfax County, will quadruple bus capacity at the main shuttle hub.

Biking

Mason is also a designated Bicycle Friendly University with over a 1400 bike racks bike pumps, and fix-it stations.

Ridesharing

Students can use Zimride to find or share a ride, or to find a carpool partner.

Construction and Detours

Construction projects can impact parking and traffic flow on campus. Through approximately August 22 there will be some detours and lane closures on the northwest part of the Fairfax Campus as Patriot Circle is rebuilt to the south of its current location between George Mason Boulevard and Aquia Creek Lane. The George Mason Boulevard entrance to campus is closed as well this summer as part of the construction of the Petersen Family College of Health and Human Services Building.
