Decoding Control: A Comprehensive Guide to GE Universal Remote Codes
The GE universal remote is a popular and trusted third-party remote, renowned for its broad compatibility and ease of programming. This article provides a comprehensive guide on how to program your GE universal remote to control various devices, offering solutions for common issues and maximizing its functionality.
Why Choose a GE Universal Remote?
GE universal remotes offer a practical solution to managing multiple devices in your entertainment setup. Their multiple device compatibility eliminates the need for a cluster of remote controls. GE remotes are budget-friendly and simple to program. With the ability to program a single remote to work with different devices, and to switch between them by pressing the dedicated input button for the device, such as TV, DVD, CBL, Aux, and more, GE universal remotes offer convenience and simplicity.
Unveiling the Programming Process
There are generally two methods to program a GE universal remote: manual code entry and auto code search.
Method 1: Manual Code Entry
This method involves finding the specific code for your device and entering it into the remote.
Step 1: Finding the Code
- Consult the Code List: Every GE remote is supplied with a print manual and a code book. Locate the TV section of your print or digital code book and find your device brand. There should be several four-digit pins you can try, though your best bet is to start off with whatever code is listed first.
- Check the Battery Compartment: Remove the batteries from the GE universal remote and look inside the compartment. Both the version (CL3, CL4, CL5, or CL6) and remote codes are usually listed there. You can also find the model number, manufacturing country, and code list version.
- Online Resources: If you can't find the code list, look up device codes based on your remote’s version (CL3, CL4, CL5 or CL6), as well as the type (TV, DVD player, etc.) and brand name of the device you want to program into your universal remote. It will contain the model and version numbers, as well as a URL address for online help with finding your remote’s device codes.
Step 2: Entering Setup Mode
Press and hold the Setup button on the remote until the red light on the remote control turns on. Release the Setup button. The red light will remain on. The light is usually at the top of the remote or on the power button.

Step 3: Selecting the Device Type
Press and release the device button on the remote for the type of device you wish to control (for example TV, STR, BLU-RAY, AUD, DVD, CBL, SAT, AUX). For example, if programming the remote for use with your DVD player, press and release the DVD button. If there's no button for the device specifically for the device want to program, choose any other device button. The red light will blink once and remain on.
Step 4: Inputting the Code
Use the number pad to enter the four-digit code. Once the remote registers a code, the red light will turn off.
Step 5: Testing the Code
Point the remote at your device to test out some device commands (power, volume, input-switching, etc.). For example, you may be able to use the remote to power your device off and on, but you may not be able to adjust or control the volume of your device. If everything works correctly, that's all there is to it. If the buttons do not operate the device, return to Step 1 above and use the next code in the list.
Method 2: Auto Code Search
The Auto Code Search is a process where the remote searches through all of the codes stored in its memory to find a compatible code for your device.
Step 1: Enter Setup Mode
Press and hold down the SETUP button on the remote until the red light on the remote control turns on. Release the SETUP button. The red light will remain on.

Step 2: Select the Device Type
Press and release the device button on the remote for the type of device you wish to control, (for example TV, STR, BLU-RAY, AUD, DVD, CBL, SAT, AUX). The red light will blink once and remain on.
Step 3: Start Code Search
With the remote pointed at the device, press and release the POWER button on the remote. The remote will send 10 different codes to the device. The red light will blink once for each code and remain on after sending the 10 codes.
Step 4: Review Individual Codes
With the remote pointed at the device, press and release the VOL ^ button. The remote will re-send the first code of the 10 codes from Step 2. The red light will blink once and remain on. Be sure to wait approximately 3 seconds after each VOL ^ button press to allow the device time to respond to the code.
- If the device turns off, you have found a code for the device. Press and release the same device button you pressed in Step 2. This will store the code in the remote. Go to Step 5.
- If the device doesn't turn off, continue to press and release the VOL ^ button until the device turns off to test the other 9 codes from Step 3. When the device turns off, you have found a code for your device. Press and release the same device button pressed in Step 3. This will store the code in the remote. Go to Step 5.
The VOL down button can be used to go backward through each batch of 10 codes. The red indicator light will flash 2 times after testing the first or last code in each batch of 10.
Step 5: Test the Results
Point the remote at the device. Test the buttons on the remote to see if the device responds as you would expect. If the buttons do not operate the device, return to Step 1 above and use the next code in the list.

Step 6: Repeat the Process for Other Devices
To use a universal remote with different devices, follow the same steps we’ve listed above. The only thing you’ll need to be careful about is pressing the correct input button for the correct device when using the auto search method.
Troubleshooting Common Issues
- Partial Code Functionality: If your remote is programmed, but not all of the buttons are working for a particular device, it could be due to partial code functionality. Your remote may be using a code that only controls some of your device’s functions. Try reprogramming your remote with a different device code.
- Suboptimal Code Issue: If your GE universal remote turns the TV on and off but will not change the channel, it is probably a suboptimal code issue.
- Mute Button: You should see a 'mute' button on your remote that can be used to mute and unmute the volume. If you don't see the mute/unmute button, you can try checking the manual that came with your TV. If nothing else works, contact the manufacturer.
- Shift Mode: If you can’t get your menu to appear or can’t move around in your TV menu and/or your DVD menu, your remote may be using shift mode. Press and release the shift/setup button and then use your menu/information button while the red light is still blinking. If this doesn’t work or if your remote doesn’t have a shift function, try reprogramming your remote with a different device code.
- Programming is Messed Up: All GE, Philips and UltraPro universal remotes and the Philips Roku + TV universal remote can be reset to factory settings using the following instructions. Press and hold the setup button until the red light stays on, then release it. Press and release 0 (zero). The red light will blink twice. Press the rewind button four times. The red light will blink twice.
Advanced Features
- ABCD Buttons: The ABCD buttons, as seen on some 4-device universal remotes, perform various commands depending on the device being controlled. For GE, Philips and UltraPro remotes, these buttons can be used to control advanced DVR functions or a cable or satellite set-top box. The ABCD buttons cannot be programmed.
- App Hotkeys: Increasingly, universal remotes are equipped with one or more app hotkeys that can open your smart TV’s designated streaming app. The app hotkey’s programming relies on the TV's built-in settings, and is, therefore, not programmable.
- Master Volume Control: GE and UltraPro universal remotes come with a master volume control feature. The Philips version of that feature is called primary audio control. When programmed, this audio feature allows you to adjust your volume on the selected device no matter which connected device is in use.
