Galen College of Nursing, with its main campus in Louisville, Kentucky, has a rich history and a strong focus on nursing education. Founded to address the growing demand for nurses, Galen has evolved into a multi-campus institution offering a range of nursing programs. This article delves into the college's history, academic programs, accreditation status, and recent challenges.
Historical Overview
Galen College of Nursing was established over 30 years ago in Louisville, Kentucky. Recognizing that traditional higher education pathways alone could not meet workforce demand, Galen became an independent education institution in 1993. The college's single-purpose mission of educating future nurses quickly transformed lives. In 2020, HCA Healthcare acquired Galen College of Nursing, uniting two organizations dedicated to nursing and quality care. This investment has enabled Galen to expand its reach and deliver quality nursing education across the country. To date, more than 47,000 nurses have graduated from Galen.
Academic Programs
Galen College of Nursing-Louisville, founded in 1989, offers various focused programs designed to help students enter nursing or advance their nursing careers. These programs include:

Galen's nursing education is designed to deliver quality education, emphasizing hands-on experience and innovative learning resources. The college is recognized as a Center of Excellence in Nursing Education by the National League for Nursing, a designation held by fewer than 10% of nursing institutions. This recognition is designed for nursing schools or healthcare organizations that have achieved a level of excellence in a specific area.

Recent SACSCOC Warning
Following a review by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC), the board issued a warning to Galen College of Nursing in Louisville. The board issued the sanction on June 26. It will review the sanction in December. An institution can be on a warning for two years maximum. The college is still accredited while on its current six-month sanction. The SACSCOC issued Galen the warning because it said it determined the institution had not demonstrated compliance with student achievement, student outcomes regarding educational programs and also regarding archived information. In a statement provided to The Courier Journal, the college said: "Galen College of Nursing received a warning from SACSCOC during a routine off-site review earlier this year. The issue isn’t that we did not meet the metrics being measured, but in how we reported the data to SACSCOC. This is a correctable documentation issue, not a reflection of performance.
In April 2024, Galen College of Nursing submitted a fifth-year interim review, a mandatory report submitted halfway through an institution's 10-year accreditation cycle. The interim review committee found compliance concerns in that report regarding certain accrediting standards, causing Galen to submit a referral report. The governing body's Board of Trustees issued the warning after reviewing the referral report, according to a disclosure statement released by the regional accrediting body.
The SACSCOC said in that statement a warning can be imposed by the board:

- After "significant non-compliance with the core requirements or … the accreditation standards" of the accrediting body;
- For failure to make timely and significant progress toward correcting deficiencies that led to non-compliance;
- Or for failure to comply with SACSCOC policies and procedures.
At the six-month mark in December, the Board of Trustees will review a monitoring report submitted by Galen that is supposed to address the non-compliant standards, then reconsider the accreditation status.
From there, the board has five options:
- Remove the institution from a warning without an additional report;
- Remove the institution from a warning and request a follow-up report;
- Continue accreditation while on a warning and request another monitoring report, possibly with a special committee authorized;
- Place the institution on probation while continuing accreditation and request a second monitoring report, possibly with a special committee authorized;
- Remove the institution for failure to comply.
Because an SACSCOC accreditation includes all components of an institution, including all branch campuses, off-campus sites, distance learning programs and all other programs, the disclosure statement said "the warning status applies to the entire institution."
