Understanding Fork Union Military Academy Tuition and Fees
Fork Union Military Academy (FUMA), a Christian, college preparatory boarding school for young men in Grades 7 through 12 and postgraduates, aims to educate, develop, and inspire young men in a college preparatory, Christian, military environment. A key consideration for families exploring this option is the cost. This article provides a comprehensive overview of FUMA's tuition, associated fees, and available financial aid options.
The Cost of a Military Education
Tuition at most college preparatory military boarding schools ranges from about $25,000 to over $60,000 per year. Operating a high-quality boarding school is not a cheap endeavor, and many boarding schools charges $50,000 to $60,000 or more per year. Fork Union Military Academy's yearly tuition (boarding students) is $36,600. Tuition international students is $44,850.
What the Tuition Covers
It’s important to determine what is included in the school’s tuition price, and what is not included. Some schools may charge additional fees for required items and services. Tuition is the basic price you pay to attend the school and receive instruction.
Understanding Fork Union Military Academy's Tuition Structure
Fork Union Military Academy is a not-for-profit Christian school and does its best to keep tuition low. Helping students come to Fork Union is something viewed as part of their Christian mission.

Fork Union Military Academy offers families three payment plan options. All payment plans are managed through FACTS Tuition Management. Additional Savings and Considerations
It is important to factor in the savings you might realize from enrolling your child in a military school. According to the U. S. Department of Agriculture, the average family spends at least $23,000 per year on a child’s expenses such as food and clothing. Don't forget to add up how much money you'll save by not having to feed, house, and entertain your teenage boy for 9 months of the year. Depending on how voracious your son's appetite is, that can be a significant cost savings for you!
Financial Aid and Scholarship Opportunities
Affordability is a big concern today for many parents. Tuition and fees for a military school can look like an imposing number to many families. Sometimes a school with a lower tuition price can end up costing a family more than a school with a higher tuition price simply because one school offers more financial aid to the family. More than half of FUMA's US domestic boarding students receive some level of financial aid, ranging from $1,000 to $30,000 or more. Financial aid grant amounts will only be discussed once a student has been accepted for admission. Any award will only be valid for a stated period of time so that, if an awardee elects not to enroll in the Academy, another family can benefit from the grant assistance. Simply put, if your son is accepted we will work hard to help find the resources for him to attend.
Types of Financial Aid
Need-based financial aid: Grants that are based on demonstrated financial need. Schools use need-based financial aid to help enroll students who would otherwise not be able to afford to attend the school. You will usually need to complete a financial aid application that takes into account your family’s income, assets, and financial status.
Merit-based scholarships: Aid grants that are based on the student’s academic abilities, athletic abilities, or other special talents, rather than on demonstrated financial need.
A large percentage of families receive financial aid awards to offset the costs of attending boarding school. In fact, as a national average it’s as many as 36% of families or more according to statistics compiled by the National Association of Independent Schools.

There are a huge variety of organizations that offer private scholarships for students in K-12 schools. You can find well-known national foundations, such as the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation, that provide scholarship grants for high school students. There are also many regional, state, and local organizations that provide secondary school scholarship opportunities. Just as an example, in a recent online search I came across The Korean American Scholarship Fund that provides scholarships to Korean American students, as well as to descendants of American veterans who served during the Korean War.

Other Avenues for Financial Assistance

- Coverdell Education Savings Accounts and 529 plans are investment programs that allow you to save money for future education expenses for your child or other designated beneficiary. While these programs were originally intended for higher education purposes, such as college costs, changes in the law in 2017 and 2025 mean that some of these invested funds (up to $20,000) may be available to use for K-12 educational expenses including ACT/SAT prep classes and related expenses. Rules for these savings programs may vary from state to state, so you will want to check with your financial advisor to determine whether you may be able to use these funds to help pay tuition at Fork Union.
- US veterans who have not fully utilized their GI Bill amounts may be eligible to use those amounts for our tuition. Our business office staff may be able to help provide you with more information based on your individual circumstances.
- Fork Union Military Academy offers a significant discount on tuition for new US students entering the Academy in grades 7-12 with a parent or guardian serving on active duty/reserve component, or retired from the US military. Discounts are also available for parents who are active or retired ordained Christian clergy, as well as discounts for alumni of the Academy.

Fork Union Military Academy offers a Tuition Protection Plan. The Tuition Protection Plan offers the only means by which any tuition adjustment or refund can be made for students who leave school before the end of the academic year.
