The Wizarding World of Harry Potter is not just any theme park land, but a groundbreaking one that ushered in a new era of theme park artistry. The Wizarding World of Harry Potter - Hogsmeade opened its gates to guests on June 18, 2010, to incredible reception. Among the magical experiences within Hogsmeade is Flight of the Hippogriff, a family-friendly roller coaster that offers a gentle introduction to the world of Harry Potter.
Genesis of a Magical Ride
Flight of the Hippogriff is a junior roller coaster at the Wizarding World of Harry Potter section of the many Universal theme parks. It is present at Universal Islands of Adventure in Universal Orlando Resort, Universal Studios Japan, Universal Studios Hollywood and Universal Studios Beijing. Designed by Universal Creative, the first installation opened at Islands of Adventure on June 18, 2010.
The ride's origins can be traced back to the Flying Unicorn, one of the first attractions added to Islands of Adventure after its opening. Debuting on June 29, 2000, in the park's Lost Continent area, Flying Unicorn was a ride set in an enchanted forest, like something from a fairy tale. Various signs along the queue tell the story of a wizard who found a baby unicorn's horn, which it shed (once every thousand years). He then used the horn to create this ride. The magic from the unicorn's horn is used so that it can fly.
In May 2007, Universal announced the Wizarding World of Harry Potter section. Both Flying Unicorn and another ride, Dueling Dragons, were going to be part of this new area. After running for eight years, Flying Unicorn closed on July 7, 2008, to be rethemed and incorporated into the new area. On September 15, 2009, Universal officially announced the rides for the new Harry Potter area. The attraction soft opened on June 1, 2010, under the new name of Flight of the Hippogriff.
A Rethemed Experience
As part of Universal Orlando's ambitious expansion to create The Wizarding World of Harry Potter - Hogsmeade, the ride was selected for redevelopment to integrate into the new themed land, transforming its whimsical Merlinwood setting into a Harry Potter-inspired experience centered on the hippogriff creature from J.K. Rowling's books. Key collaborators included Universal Creative, which oversaw the overall design and theming, in partnership with Vekoma Rides for the roller coaster system, retaining the original Junior Coaster (335m) model while adapting it for the new narrative. Themed elements were developed under licensing agreements with Warner Bros. Entertainment and J.K. Rowling.

The roller coaster's new backstory is that Hagrid is teaching young wizards how to fly a Hippogriff by using fake replicas of the creature. The line for the ride winds through the Hogwarts Grounds. You'll walk past Hagrid's Hut and the Forest. Then you enter an open area where the Care of Magical Creatures Class is taught. The roller coaster takes passengers on a test flight of the Hippogriff over the Forbidden Forest and Hagrid's Hut. Before the ride starts, you are told to bow to the Hippogriff.
Ride Experience
Flight of the Hippogriff is constructed as a family-oriented steel roller coaster with no inversions, featuring a compact layout designed for high throughput in themed environments. Primary models include the Vekoma Junior Coaster (335 m standard layout) at Universal's Islands of Adventure in Orlando and Universal Studios Japan, and the custom Mack Rides Youngstar Coaster at Universal Studios Hollywood and Universal Studios Beijing. Propulsion systems employ drive tire booster wheels for efficient, low-noise ascent on the lift hill in the Orlando, Japan, and Hollywood locations, enabling a quick 50-60 second ride duration with helical turns and gentle airtime hills. In contrast, the Beijing installation uses a traditional chain lift hill to minimize operational noise in its urban setting.
The ride begins immediately after dispatch from the station, where the hippogriff-themed train ascends the tire-propelled lift hill that weaves through the treetops of the Forbidden Forest, providing panoramic views of Hogsmeade village and building anticipation with increasing wind and ambient sounds of rustling leaves and distant creature calls. From the top, riders get a great view of the entire Wizarding World. The cars then drop and twist through various turns around Hogwarts Grounds. Finally, you return to the start of the track.
A Family-Friendly Thrill
The ride, originally called Flying Unicorn, was one of the first new attractions at Islands of Adventure. The ride's story was about an enchanted forest, like something from a fairy tale. Signs in the waiting line told the tale of a wizard. He found a baby unicorn's horn, which it sheds only once every thousand years. The wizard then used the horn's magic to make the ride's carts fly. Riders sat in carts shaped like mechanical unicorns.

Locations Around the World
A copy of the Orlando ride was built at Universal Studios Japan. It is also part of the Wizarding World of Harry Potter area there. Flight of the Hippogriff was also built at Universal Studios Hollywood and opened on April 7, 2016. Another installation exists at Universal Studios Beijing, opened on September 20, 2021.
Each installation is situated in the Hogsmeade village area of The Wizarding World of Harry Potter themed land, providing guests with an immersive entry point into the Forbidden Forest section of the environment.
