Navigating the Emerson Student Portal: A Comprehensive Guide
The Emerson Student Portal serves as a central hub for students to manage their academic journey, access important resources, and stay connected with the Emerson community. This guide provides a comprehensive overview of how to effectively use the portal, covering everything from initial account activation to accessing grades and requesting accommodations.
Getting Started: Activating Your Emerson Account
After registering for courses, the first step is to activate your Emerson Account. This account provides access to campus computers and networked services. Your username will typically be in the format of firstname.lastname or firstname_lastname.
Accessing Emerson Resources from Anywhere
Once your Emerson Account is activated, you can access Emerson resources from any device, anywhere, by visiting the Learn Anywhere page. This page serves as a gateway to various online tools and platforms essential for your studies.
Online Courses: Canvas and Zoom
Emerson College utilizes Canvas for online asynchronous courses. Canvas is also used for online synchronous courses, which provide live instruction via Zoom. Canvas is used for posting course materials, assignments, Zoom links, and discussion boards. Therefore, students should log in to Canvas at least 24 hours before their first course starts to ensure access. Course content, including the syllabus, should be available for student viewing on the first official date of the course, although some instructors may publish their content earlier. If you experience issues logging into Canvas, the IT Help Desk is available to assist you.
Emerson ID Card: Accessing Campus Buildings
All Emerson students, staff, and faculty are required to have an Emerson ID card to access any building on the Emerson campus. If you are a returning student taking an in-person class, you do not need a new ID card.

Dropping a Course
If you need to drop a course, you may do so via your Student Portal.
Student Agreement
For every semester of active enrollment, all Emerson College students are required to review and affirm the electronic Student Agreement, which outlines your rights and responsibilities as an Emerson student. During the checkout process to enroll in a course, you will be asked to complete a required checkbox field to affirm your student agreement each semester you are enrolled. Semester dates can be found on the Emerson College academic calendar.
Accessing Grades and Transcripts
Grades are available at the end of the semester and can be accessed under "My Enrollment History" via your Student Portal. To order digital or paper transcripts or to request enrollment verification, visit the Certifications and Transcripts page of the Registrar's Office.
1098-T Tax Documents
Per IRS guidelines, 1098-T tax documents are issued only to students who have completed credit-bearing courses (undergraduate or graduate credit). You may provide your receipt to your tax professional to determine eligibility to claim these expenses for your taxes. Emerson College is not a tax advisor and cannot provide tax advice. Consult the IRS or a tax professional for more information about the tax credit and your eligibility.
International Students
International students are welcome to enroll in online non-credit courses. For in-person courses, Emerson College is not currently authorized to issue I-20’s for study in its non-credit courses. Depending on an international student’s immigration status and personal circumstances, enrollment in a non-credit course may be permissible or may result in an immigration status violation. Maintaining valid immigration status while in the United States is the responsibility of the individual, not Emerson College. Emerson staff cannot advise individuals about their immigration status.

Accommodations for Students with Disabilities: The SAS Portal
Emerson College's Student Accessibility Services (SAS) utilizes an online system called the SAS Portal to manage the student accommodation process. Students who wish to receive accommodations must follow the steps outlined by SAS before meeting with a staff member who will confirm or deny their request. Previously, SAS used a manual system, which created delays for student accommodations to be implemented in their courses. The SAS Portal modernizes this process and makes it easier for students to access their accommodations and for faculty to track and maintain student accommodation information. Professors can upload their exams into the interface and view information about students’ specific accommodations.
Requesting Semester Academic Accommodation Letters
Although your approved accommodations will be available throughout your time at Emerson, each semester you will need to request your semester accommodation letters. Here's how:
- Step 1: Access the SAS Portal by selecting “Student” and using your Emerson credentials to log in. Screen reader users can toggle on Accessibility Mode by clicking the View Options button in the upper left corner of the screen.
- Step 2: Select Accommodations > Semester Request.
- Step 3: Select Add New and select the correct semester from the drop-down menu.
- Step 4: Choose Submit for All to request accommodation letters for all of your courses or select Review the Renewal if you want only specific accommodations for specific courses.
- Step 5: When your SAS staff member is able to review and confirm the accommodations, the letter will be activated for your professors to view in the portal. You will also receive a copy of the letter.
Contact SAS with any questions, as this is a new process. If you wish to discuss your accommodations, you should reach out to your SAS staff member.
