Education City Golf Club: A Premier Golfing Destination in Qatar

Education City Golf Club (ECGC), inaugurated in 2019 under the patronage of the Qatar Foundation for Education, Science and Community Development, stands as a revolutionary and holistic approach to developing the game of golf in Qatar. Designed by the celebrated Spanish golfer José María Olazábal, Education City Golf Club offers a unique golfing experience in the Middle East. It is located in Education City to the west of central Doha. For many years, golf in Qatar was limited to a couple of desert courses, where golfers putted out on "browns" rather than "greens". From 1997 the country was able to boast one of the Middle East's first grass championship courses, Doha Golf Club, host venue to the European Tour's Qatar Masters. Now, at last, Qatar is home to a second top-quality grass golf course.

A Vision Realized

The club was conceived by the Qatar Foundation. Spanning 120 hectares (approximately 297 acres), this world-class facility redefines the golfing landscape in the region. This marks Olazábal's first golf course design in the Middle East, and he has expressed that the project is "unlike any other" due to its unique setting within Education City and its integration with the surrounding academic and cultural institutions.

Three Distinct Courses

Education City Golf Club comprises three golf courses, all designed by José María Olazábal, with fairways, greens, tees and rough built to USGA specification:

18-Hole Championship Course: This desert-style course offers an excellent test for your game. The 18-hole championship course takes you through the desert and wadi terrain of Qatar. Olazábal has purposely led the first few holes of the golf course to an ancient wadi wall, allowing its charm and beauty to set the tone for your whole round. Host venue for the Qatar Masters in 2020, this exciting new venue offers unique views of the Doha skyline, the Education City World Cup football stadium, and the older Rayyan Castle. Gently rolling terrain and a profusion of sharp-edged bunkering defines the course, along with several fairway hugging lakes. Above distances are for the 18-hole Championship course.
6-Hole Championship Course: The 6-hole course is the realisation of Education City Golf Club to not only attract newcomers to take up the game but also offer the experience of playing a beautifully manicured championship course in less than 90 minutes.
9-Hole Par-3 Course: The 9-hole par-3 course is designed to allow golfers of all abilities to experience the fun of the game, day or night. The varied short holes create a fun and family-friendly opportunity to test your golf skills.

All three courses are floodlit.

Sustainability and Design

In line with its commitment to sustainability, Education City Golf Club employs drought-tolerant Platinum TE Paspalum grass throughout its courses. This choice minimizes water usage and ensures the courses remain lush and playable year-round. The layout incorporates natural features, such as a wadi (dry riverbed), which adds character and elevation changes to the otherwise flat terrain.

Centre of Excellence: The impressive Centre of Excellence is a state-of-the-art learning facility for golf development. Golfers can receive golf lessons in one of the five private swing studios, or putting studio, which open out towards the Trackman driving range and offer the latest in camera and ball flight technology. The tuition available at the Education City Golf Club Centre of Excellence is provided by an outstanding team of PGA Professionals.

Driving Range: A TrackMan-equipped driving range.

Tournaments and Events

Education City Golf Club has also been a host venue for the prestigious Commercial Bank Qatar Masters, a European Tour event, further solidifying its status as a world-class golfing facility. Notably, the winners of the Qatar Masters held at Education City Golf Club in 2020 and 2021 were Jorge Campillo and Antoine Rozner, respectively.

Location and Accessibility

Education City Golf Club is accessible via car. The distance from Hamad International Airport is approximately 25 minutes. Also in the area around the golf course are the Rayyan Castle, 2022 World Cup Stadium, and Arab Museum of Modern Art.
