Does a Minor Show Up on Your Diploma? Understanding Degree Recognition

Earning a college degree is a significant achievement, and many students choose to enhance their education by pursuing a minor in addition to their major. A common question that arises is whether a minor appears on the diploma itself. This article aims to clarify how minors are recognized upon graduation, focusing on diplomas and transcripts.

Minor Completion and Official Records

The completion of a minor is officially recorded on the academic transcript. To have a minor officially recorded on the transcript and diploma, the student must petition the department or office administering the minor for admission to the minor. College of Letters and Science students must petition to enter a minor through the department or office administering the minor. School of the Arts and Architecture; Engineering; Music; Nursing; and Theater, Film, and Television students must also obtain school approval.

Diploma vs. Transcript: What's the Difference?

It's important to distinguish between a diploma and a transcript. The diploma is a formal document certifying the conferral of a degree. The transcript is a comprehensive record of a student's academic performance, including courses taken, grades received, and any honors or distinctions earned. Majors appear on the official transcript. Minors and concentrations are added to the transcript at the time of degree conferral. Majors are not printed on the diploma unless honors are awarded in the major.

How Minors Are Recognized

While the major is typically the primary focus of the diploma, the minor is usually not explicitly printed on it, unless honors are awarded in the major. Instead, the transcript serves as the official record of the completed minor. The transcript provides a detailed overview of the student's academic achievements, including the specific minor earned. At the time of degree conferral, minors and concentrations are added to the transcript

Syracuse University Specifics

Syracuse University awards degrees and certificates four times per year: in May, June or July, August, and December. Each undergraduate school and college certifies the completion of its students’ degree requirements. Minors are also certified by a student’s school/college. For graduate students, certification of degrees and certificates of advanced study may be handled by their department or by the Graduate Certification office in 304 Lyman Hall. Once certification is complete, the Registrar’s Office posts the award and orders the diploma. When posted, the degree appears on the academic transcript.

Filing a Diploma Request

Graduating students must notify the University that they intend to graduate through the File Diploma Request process, accessed through MySlice. Only students who complete this process are included in degree certification review. Log in to MySlice > Student Home > Academics > Diploma Request.

eDiplomas: A Digital Alternative

eDiplomas are an electronic version of the paper diploma. They cannot be printed. However, you can provide the PDF as confirmation of the completion of degree. The eDiploma is a certified PDF of your diploma. You will receive your eDiploma when your diploma is ordered, after your degree is conferred. For alumni, an eDiploma can be ordered for a one-time charge of $5. A Secure ID is required to order your eDiploma, however if you do not have your Secure ID, you may request one at Michael Sutter, by choosing the Request Secure ID button.

Important Considerations for Graduation

The last day to obtain the required approval(s) is Friday of the second week of the degree-expected term. Late entry to a minor may result in a degree award date for the following term.

Name on Diploma

Your Primary Name on your academic record will appear on your diploma, unless you specify a Diploma Name. Your Diploma Name is a preferred name you choose for your diploma. Your request will be reviewed and you will be notified when it is processed. International students need to be aware of the implications of having diploma with a different name from their official student record. Review your Primary Name in Student Center. If you wish to correct your Primary Name you must do so prior to your degree date.
