Why Choose DistroKid?
As a student musician, you need affordable, reliable tools that won’t distract from your studies. DistroKid stands out as a prominent choice for music distribution, especially for aspiring artists and educators in the music realm. One of its most significant advantages is the speedy delivery it offers to major streaming platforms such as Spotify, Apple Music, and Amazon Music. Musicians can expect their music to be available on these platforms in as little as a few days, enabling them to share their art promptly with a global audience.
Another key benefit of using DistroKid is its royalty structure. Unlike many traditional distribution services, DistroKid allows artists to retain 100% of their earnings from music sales and streams. This is especially beneficial for students who may be entering the music industry with limited financial resources. The user-friendly interface of DistroKid simplifies the distribution process, making it accessible for those who may not be tech-savvy. With just a few clicks, users can upload their songs, select platforms for release, and manage their music catalog efficiently.
DistroKid also provides unique services such as automatic revenue splits among collaborators, which is particularly advantageous for musicians working with bands or co-writers. Additionally, the platform offers cover song licensing options, allowing artists to release songs they have not originally composed without legal obstacles.
Support and Resources for Student Musicians
As student musicians embark on their journey to share their music with the world, having access to the right tools and resources can make all the difference. DistroKid not only offers a generous discount for students and educators, but it also provides a plethora of support mechanisms tailored to meet the unique needs of emerging artists.
One of the key resources available on DistroKid is its comprehensive library of educational material. This includes music distribution guides that inform users about uploading songs, choosing release dates, and effectively managing their music catalog. Additionally, the platform provides tutorials that cover essential topics such as copyright issues, maximizing revenue from digital platforms, and marketing strategies specifically aimed at building a fanbase.

For those looking to expand their skill set, external resources complement DistroKid’s offerings. Various online courses focusing on music production, marketing, and performance are available, often at a discounted rate for students. These courses can provide additional insights and techniques that are invaluable for aspiring musicians.
Managing Your DistroKid Account
It's important to understand how to manage your DistroKid account, including aspects like payment, upgrades, and downgrades. At this time, it is not possible to pay for DistroKid charges using the earnings in your DistroKid Bank. DistroKid requires payment using Visa, Mastercard, Discover, or American Express cards. When you enter your card details in DistroKid, they go straight to our credit card processor and never reach our database or servers. Unfortunately, if your credit card isn't working, there's not much DistroKid can do to help. Your bank or credit card provider sends the decline code directly to our credit card processor, so we recommend reaching out to your bank or credit card provider for more information in the case of a declined card. Sales tax may be applied to your recurring and one-time payments according to the applicable sales tax rates in your country, state, province, territory, county, and/or city at the time of the charge. Tax rates vary by locale.
Upgrading Your Subscription
Yes, you can upgrade your plan at any time. Yes, you can always upgrade your subscription unless you are already subscribed at the Ultimate 100 plan. The full cost of the upgraded subscription is due at the time of upgrade, but you will also receive a refund for the time remaining in your previous subscription. If you upgrade your plan before the end of your current subscription, you will receive a refund for the time remaining in that subscription. If you upgrade within 14 days of first signing up AND within your first year of membership, you'll automatically receive a full refund for your previous plan.
Downgrading Your Subscription
From there, you'll see the option to downgrade your subscription. Please note that the new, lower subscription will take place on your next renewal date after scheduling a downgrade; subscription plan downgrades are not applied immediately. Your current subscription and its benefits will continue until the next renewal date. Keep in mind that if you choose to downgrade, you will lose the features available in the higher subscription plan once your downgraded plan begins. From there, click "Downgrade." This will bring you a page where you can select the plan you wish to downgrade to. If you select a plan that offers less artist slots than the number of artists in use on your account, you will be brought to a page where you can select which artists to keep on your account. When the downgrade is processed, all other artists will be removed from the account, and all of their releases will be removed from services (unless they're opted into the Leave a Legacy album extra). To select the artists to keep, check the box to the right of the artist name(s) on this page. Once you have checked the artist(s) you want to keep, click the button on the bottom of the page to keep the artist(s) and continue. Next, you'll be brought to a page to confirm the downgrade. The page will display the new plan that you will be downgraded to, the date that plan will start, and which artists you are keeping on your account. If a downgrade is scheduled, you will see a reminder of this scheduled downgrade. To cancel the downgrade from there, click on "Cancel downgrade." You can also cancel a downgrade if you're on a release page for an artist that is scheduled to be removed from your account when your downgrade processes on your next renewal date.
Lapsed Subscriptions and Music Removal
If you stop paying your annual subscription fee, your DistroKid releases may be removed from the services you delivered them to. You will continue to have access to DistroKid and can log in to your account, and you will still receive any earnings owed to you. To prevent your releases from being removed due to a lapsed subscription payment, please make sure to keep a valid credit card on file on your DistroKid account. You can also opt your releases into our Leave a Legacy album extra to protect your releases from being removed in the event of a subscription lapse. DistroKid subscriptions automatically renew every year on the date the subscription was first created. If the charge fails, we'll give you ample notice before removing any of your music from streaming services - we know you don't want any surprises when it comes to your music. If your music is removed from streaming services after your payment lapses, your releases will be automatically restored once you update your credit card information and allow the past-due charge to succeed.
