DATCU: A Legacy of Service and Support in North Texas
DATCU Credit Union stands as a testament to the power of community and the enduring value of service. Originating in the midst of the Great Depression, DATCU has grown from a small credit union serving educators to one of the largest in Texas, with over 100,000 members. Its history is deeply intertwined with the well-being of the communities it serves, particularly in North Texas.
The Genesis of DATCU: A Response to Economic Hardship
The story of DATCU begins in the 1930s, a time of widespread economic hardship. Educators, witnessing the struggles of their colleagues, sought a solution to provide financial assistance and stability. On the campus of what is now the University of North Texas (UNT), two educators conceived the idea of a credit union to support their fellow teachers. This vision led to the establishment of DATCU, built on the principle of people helping people.
According to DATCU’s Vice President of Marketing, Susan Passariello, “Even from the very beginning, DATCU was a service-oriented idea.” By pooling their resources, these educators aimed to offer lower interest rates on loans, a crucial lifeline during the Depression.
A Strong Affinity for Education
For the first several decades, DATCU's membership was exclusive to teachers. This history has cultivated a strong connection to schools, teachers, administrators, and students in the community. DATCU's commitment to education extends beyond financial services. In 2018, DATCU donated $1 million to Denton ISD for the installation of new digital scoreboards at athletic facilities.
These scoreboards offer valuable extracurricular learning experiences for students, who gain practical skills by operating the equipment. This investment demonstrates DATCU's understanding that community support goes beyond monetary donations.

Community Service: More Than Just Giving Money
DATCU recognizes that true community service involves personal engagement and relationship building. The credit union actively participates in various initiatives that uplift individuals and foster strong community bonds.
DATCU's involvement extends to non-profit and civic organizations. The Board of Directors and executive team encourage employees to serve on the boards of local non-profits and civic groups. To promote staff volunteerism, DATCU recognizes a "Volunteer of the Year," further incentivizing their participation.
An example of employee dedication is a recent branch manager who, concerned about food insecurity among children, organized food drives throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, even in her own neighborhood.
Passariello emphasizes that DATCU's commitment to community service stems from a recognition of the support it has received from the community.
Navigating the COVID-19 Pandemic
Like all organizations, DATCU was impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. However, Passariello notes that DATCU experienced minimal disruption to its operations. To protect members and employees, DATCU temporarily closed its lobbies from March to June 2020.

Despite these challenges, DATCU ensured uninterrupted service by providing all services through drive-thru lanes, with employees wearing masks. Loan applications, paperwork, and other transactions were efficiently handled through the drive-thru.
DATCU also equipped its employees with laptops, enabling them to assist members remotely. CEO Glen McKenzie personally visited branches to ensure that the team had the necessary resources. Passariello believes that DATCU's ability to maintain service levels during the pandemic contributed to its continued success.
Evolving Needs in the Community
Passariello has observed changes in the community's needs during her tenure at DATCU. While the spirit of service remains constant, the demand for assistance has increased.
Denton has seen a rise in the number of non-profit organizations, such as Serve Denton and the Denton Community Food Center, reflecting the growing need for community support. Passariello also notes a significant increase in attention to mental health issues, an area that has gained prominence in recent years.
A Future of Continued Support
DATCU remains committed to its mission of serving the community through various initiatives. With over a billion dollars in assets, DATCU anticipates that its philanthropic efforts will expand in the future.
