Historical Context
The journey of Cuesta College began in 1916 as a division of San Luis Obispo High School, but it ceased operations in 1919 due to the United States' involvement in World War I. Later, Cal Poly established a junior college division that operated from 1927 to 1932. A private institution, Miramonte College of Atascadero, filled the gap from 1933 to 1936. In 1936, the county's second public junior college was formed as part of the San Luis Obispo High School District, but it closed in June 1959.
The modern Cuesta College was established later. In April 17, 1963 the district approved the junior college. In October 5, 1965 the college was named Cuesta.

Cuesta College has two campuses: the main San Luis Obispo campus and the North County Campus in Paso Robles. The main campus is located on State Route 1, approximately six miles from both the beaches of the Pacific Ocean and the city of San Luis Obispo. The North County Campus is situated twenty-nine miles northeast of the main campus.
The San Luis Obispo campus features KGUR, a radio station that streams on Twitch and maintains a strong presence on Instagram. The Harold J. Miossi Cultural and Performing Arts Center, featuring a 450-seat main theater and a 100-seat experimental theater, along with teaching facilities, was renamed following a significant donation from the Harold J. Miossi Charitable Trust in 2018. The gymnasium was also renamed Gilbert H. Stork Gym, after former college president Gilbert H. Stork.

Cuesta College offers degrees and certificates in 77 different fields. Popular programs include: Liberal Arts and Sciences/Liberal Studies, Business Administration and Management, General, and Health Professions and Related Programs. As of 2020-2021, the in-state tuition and fees were $1,338, while out-of-state tuition and fees were $8,702. There is no application fee.
Cuesta College is accredited by the Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges. In 2012, the college was placed on "show cause" status by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges, but its accreditation was renewed in 2013 with an upgraded status of "on warning." The college's accreditation was later reaffirmed, and sanctions were dropped.
