The Application Process

Interested students are encouraged to apply for the Sophomore Summit. The application typically includes a cover letter and a transcript or list of classes taken.

In the cover letter, applicants should express their interest in Cornerstone Research and economic/financial consulting. They should also provide examples of leadership and/or relevant life experiences that have shaped their personal and professional goals.

Cornerstone Research recognizes that some institutions may not issue grades for recent semesters. In such cases, applicants are still encouraged to submit a transcript or list of classes taken.

Point72 Academy: A Parallel Path to Investment Success

While the Cornerstone Sophomore Summit focuses on economic consulting, another noteworthy program that shares a similar goal of cultivating talent is the Point72 Academy. Founded by Jaimi Goodfriend, Head of Investment Professional Development and Point72 Academy Director, the Academy aims to identify and train the next generation of great investors.

Goodfriend, recognized in The Hedge Fund Journal’s 2019 “50 Leading Women in Hedge Funds” report, envisioned the Academy as a program to source talent in new and different ways. The Academy trains analysts for roles in long/short equity investing, which is a cornerstone of Point72's business.

Academy Structure and Goals

A typical career path for someone in the Academy program often includes participating in the Academy Sophomore Summit, interning as a Summer Academy Associate, working as a full-time Academy Associate; before becoming a full-time long/short analyst assigned to a portfolio manager team.

The Academy seeks performance, not just pedigree. Applications are received from many colleges, which include - though not exclusively - elite institutions. Academic performance is certainly one criterion that is heavily used, but the Academy seeks the right fit. Many successful applicants have spent ten weeks on the internship program.

Curriculum and Diversity

The Point72 Academy curriculum has expanded as the reality of investing has changed, with data being the biggest change. The first ten weeks of the program cover statistics, accounting, economics, finance, modelling, financial statement analysis, M&A, corporate finance, data science, sequel and coding, operational management and balance sheets. They also cover business models and how companies make money, using alternative data to verify this. Internal and external expert guest speakers add other perspectives. The composition of the classes has become more diverse.

Point72 recruits from a range of disciplines: history, music, maths, philosophy, and liberal arts, as well as finance and economics. Extracurricular achievements such as athletics can speak to passion and a competitive nature, but first and foremost they want a real intellectual passion for stock picking, investing and thinking about companies. You have to love spending hours on meticulous data analysis and synthesis.

The experiences of Eckerd College and its approach to global education also shares the common aspiration to training leaders of the world. As Bud Risser said: “And you can’t do that if you stay in one country. It’s just that simple.”
