Coppell Student Media Guide: The Sidekick
Introduction
The Sidekick is the official student-produced media outlet providing news and information published by Coppell High School students. This guide outlines the policies and practices governing the publication, emphasizing student autonomy, ethical considerations, and community engagement.
Editorial Independence and Decision-Making
Any decisions affecting the publications on all levels will be made by the student editors. The student editors and staff who want appropriate outside legal advice regarding proposed content should seek attorneys knowledgeable in media law such as those of the Student Press Law Center. The adviser will not act as a censor or determine the content of the paper. The editorial board and student editors will determine the content, including all unsigned editorials. The views stated in editorials represent that of a majority of the publication’s staff.
Content Guidelines and Standards
The publications will not publish any photos, illustrations etc. Staff members will strive to correct errors prior to publication. The Sidekick student editors reserve the right to withhold a letter or column or other submission and/or return it for revision if it contains unprotected speech or grammatical errors that could hamper its meaning. The student editors reserve the right to remove comments that violate this policy, including but not limited to those with profanity, bullying or demeaning language or factually incorrect claims that are potentially harmful.
Transparency and Ethical Considerations
Transparency is important. The program does not honor requests to “remove” or “delete” content published online. Ethically, along with all other journalistic publications, the program does not delete or remove content. The content will not be reviewed by anyone outside of the student editors aside from the adviser prior to its release to the public.
Parental Notification and Non-Disclosure
Any parent or guardian who wishes to not have their student included in student media must submit the appropriate non-disclosure agreement with the Coppell High School administration.

Staff Expectations and Conduct
The editors are selected each May. All individuals involved with The Sidekick are considered a team, with each member expected to complete all assigned stories, pages, photos, etc. on or before the assigned deadline. Major infractions will result in immediate loss of privileges from staff duties and dismissal from the leadership team, if applicable. Minor infractions will be given a verbal warning for the first one. The second one results in a loss of staff privileges. Each member of the student editors and adviser will attend a meeting with the staff member in question to discuss the issue.
Beyond the Newsroom: Student Life and Community Engagement
The Sidekick not only informs but also reflects the diverse interests and activities of the Coppell High School community. From covering winter weather hobbies to addressing student anxieties, the publication aims to connect with its audience on multiple levels.
Finding Warmth in Winter Activities
Winter weather does not have to stop hobbies. With snow and ice becoming an annual issue for Texas, we need more hobbies to keep us busy. DIYing clothing is always a good idea. If you have a shirt that you do not wear often, you can easily refresh it with paint. If you are designing a shirt, make sure to put a piece of cardboard inside the shirt while painting so it does not bleed through. On the topic of DIY, any art form is a good hobby. Expressing yourself creatively has no limits. You can doodle in a notebook, or create a full universe with unique characters of your own. Painting is extremely therapeutic and simple. Reading is a great hobby no matter what the weather is, but it is extra special when it is cold and you have a warm drink in hand. Cold weather and music mix together perfectly. Conan Gray and Billie Eillish have great winter-esque music. Listening to vinyls and CDs are also perfect for winter weather. Binge watching shows is amazing when you are huddled up in blankets. Some binge worthy shows are “Stranger Things”, “Brooklyn 99”, “Abbott Elementary” and “Arcane.” Each of these shows have different themes and vibes to fit every kind of person. “Stranger Things” is thrilling and nostalgic. “Brooklyn 99” and “Abbott Elementary” combine realistic days as a teacher or cop with humor. Hobbies bring joy to everyone. Even when it’s freezing, you can still find some warmth in activities you love.
Addressing Student Concerns
Z was interested in The Sidekick because she loves to write. If you are looking for a way to combat testing anxiety, this episode is for you. High school’s grade oriented and competitive nature can make test day seem like an impossible hurdle rather than just a regular day. The college application and selection can be daunting for many students who may not know where to start.
Community and Current Events Coverage
After winter weather hit Coppell last weekend, Coppell High School faculty and students received unexpected days away from campus.
