Each year, over 150,000 college students flock to the Boston area to study at over a dozen universities. Among these, the five Colleges of the Fenway (COF) stand out as a unique consortium. Nestled within a 0.7-mile stretch in the bustling Fenway area of Boston, the Colleges of the Fenway offer a collaborative educational ecosystem. This consortium comprises five distinct institutions: Emmanuel College, Simmons University, Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences (MCPHS), Massachusetts College of Art and Design (MassArt), and Wentworth Institute of Technology. The COF collectively represents more than 12,000 full-time undergraduate students, nearly 700 full-time faculty, and more than 2,300 course offerings.

The Colleges of the Fenway: A Closer Look

The Colleges of the Fenway is a consortium of five distinct institutions in Boston that collaborate to provide resources, experiences, academic opportunities, and more to students across all campuses. Each of the five colleges within the COF has its own unique character and focus, contributing to the diverse educational landscape of the consortium.

Emmanuel College

Emmanuel College is a Catholic, residential, liberal arts college on a beautiful 17-acre campus. It is located a 10-minute walk from Fenway Stadium. As a small, Catholic, liberal arts college, Emmanuel provides an intimate academic experience, with all classes taught by professors and capped at 35 students. Emmanuel’s 2,000 career-minded students choose from 70 majors, including a new direct-admit nursing program. The college offers programs in business, humanities, education, health sciences, and nursing. Students also benefit from a huge internship network, including positions with Boston’s pro sports teams.

Simmons University

Simmons University empowers 1,700 female students as leaders in high-demand professional fields through its all-women undergraduate program. Founded in 1899, Simmons has put the needs of its students first for more than 100 years. It is a women-focused liberal arts school that prioritizes marginalized genders and boasts an extremely inclusive community. Simmons has excellent support programs for LGBTQIA+ students, students struggling with mental health, and students with learning differences. Students love learning in small classes from professors who are often active practitioners in their field. The university is a four-year, private, non-sectarian undergraduate women’s college with a comprehensive liberal arts and professional curriculum, and four coeducational graduate professional schools. Simmons' mission is to provide transformative learning that links passion with lifelong purpose.

Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences (MCPHS)

MCPHS has been preparing students for healthcare careers since 1823! MCPHS is a healthcare-focused university that offers a wide range of articulation programs that allow students access to accelerated tracks to advanced degrees, including their most popular 6-year Pharm-D program. Perhaps best known for its pharmacy school, the college offers over 100 programs to 4,000 students in health and management. Students learn in interactive lab spaces and clinical settings, benefiting from proximity to many health organizations. MCPHS’s location in Boston provides students with unmatched access to the vast number of hospitals and biotech companies in the area.

Massachusetts College of Art and Design (MassArt)

Massachusetts College of Art and Design (MassArt) appeals to artists and creators with standout programs serving 1,700 students in animation, illustration, fashion design, jewelry, painting, arts education, fibers, film, communication design, sculpture, and more. MassArt is the country’s only public art university. It offers a wide variety of BFA programs that center on studio work rather than traditional classes. Students engage in a first-year Studio Foundation program that allows them to explore mediums before declaring a specialty. Throughout their BFA program, students are able to take classes in other mediums of interest as well.

Wentworth Institute of Technology

Wentworth Institute of Technology offers many hands-on, project-based classes and a flagship co-op program to its 4,000 students wishing to study engineering, computing and data science, design, management, and other sciences. Founded in 1904, Wentworth is a STEM-focused institution that prioritizes hands-on, project-based learning. All students participate in at least 2 semesters of paid co-op programs, where they are able to work in the field, gain experience, and network with professionals. The university is a nationally ranked university offering project-based, hands-on education through bachelor’s degree programs in areas like engineering, architecture, computer science, applied mathematics, business management, construction management, design, cybersecurity and applied science. With over $300 million in campus improvements recently completed, students enjoy cutting-edge equipment and new apartment-style housing.

Collaborative Opportunities

The Colleges of the Fenway provide numerous collaborative opportunities for students across the consortium. Shared initiatives among the five colleges are aimed at enhancing the quality of education, enriching student experiences and reducing costs through sharing of resources.

Cross-Registration

Students within the COF have the opportunity to cross-register for courses at other institutions within the consortium. Collaborative student opportunities include formal cross-registration which allows access to over 1,500 courses otherwise not available on the student's home campus. Students may cross-register up to 60% of their courses at other institutions. For example, students may take American Sign Language at Simmons, or painting at Massachusetts College of Art.

Shared Resources and Activities

Through the Colleges of the Fenway you can take courses, attend events, participate in intramural sports, join performing arts programs and clubs, and much more at any of the member institutions. The COF hosts yearly events like block parties, carnivals, movie nights, intramural sports, and fitness classes. All the clubs and organizations of each of the five COF member institutions are open to you. Students may use career centers, intramural sports, performing arts, student life programs and activities, and study-abroad opportunities at other schools in the consortium. Students may also participate in shared social events planned by the Colleges of the Fenway and various groups throughout the campuses. The Colleges of the Fenway Center for Performing Arts invites all students to participate in dance, music (jazz, orchestra, choir) or theatre, including performance, instruction, choreography, playwriting, and technical theatre.

Location and Accessibility

Nestled within a 0.7 - mile stretch, the COF campus is conveniently positioned between the excitement of Fenway and the renowned Longwood Medical Area. Each institution’s campus is a short walk from one another.

Key Locations

The Colleges of the Fenway encompass several key locations:

Main Office: Located on 1 Palace Road, Boston, MA - the COF office is located next to the Isabella Stuart Gardner Museum and inside of the Public Safety building.
DMC & MassArt Auditorium: The Design and Media Center (DMC) is located at 621 Huntington Avenue, with the studio spaces accessible within the DMC building.
Atrium & W-300, White Hall: The Atrium is situated in the main academic building, the Atrium is a central gathering area on the MCPHS campus.
Common Grounds Café, Knight Board Room, & Linda K. Paresky Conference Room: Common grounds is located in the first floor of the Main College Building, Common Grounds is a popular student gathering space. The Knight board Room is situated in the Main College Building and can be accessed from the administrative offices.

A New Minor in Health Humanities

A new minor in Health Humanities offers students a broad perspective. Simmons University and the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Science (MCPHS) have created a shared program in Health Humanities, funded by a Davis Grant. Professor Teresa Nelson's entrepreneurship class seeks to build unity on campus with their company, SimScenes Stickers.
