College Senior Portraits: Ideas to Capture Your Unique Journey

Graduation photos are a rite of passage, keepsakes that you and your family will cherish for years to come. High school seniors are surrounded by photography on a daily basis, but professional senior portraits go far beyond casual snapshots. This guide is designed to provide clarity and inspiration for creating senior portraits that feel natural, confident, and personal.

Expressing Yourself Through Senior Portraits

School headshots and cap-and-gown photos rarely reflect personality. A professional senior photoshoot allows seniors to express their style, interests, and confidence in a way that feels intentional. Your senior pictures should reflect all the amazing things that make you unique, so let’s work together to create a customized session that’s exceptionally you.

Location, Location, Location

The location you choose for senior pictures sets the tone for the entire session. Here are some ideas:

  • Urban Locations: Alleys, staircases, rooftops, and city sidewalks create modern images that feel confident and stylish, adding texture, contrast, and energy to senior portraits.
  • Parks and Gardens: Parks and gardens offer soft greenery, seasonal color, and timeless scenery.
  • Beaches: Sand dunes, tall grasses, wooden piers, and open shoreline provide variety while keeping the focus on the senior. Beach senior pictures feel relaxed, bright, and timeless.
  • Rustic Locations: Open fields, barns, and countryside landscapes create an authentic, laid-back feel.
  • Sports Venues: Portraits taken at a football field, basketball court, or other athletic venue highlight dedication and achievement. Sports play a major role in many seniors’ lives.
  • Lakes and Rivers: Lakes, docks, and rivers create peaceful backdrops for senior portraits.

What to Wear: Outfits and Style

Choosing what to wear for senior pictures plays a major role in how your portraits look and feel. When planning outfits, think about comfort, movement, and coordination with your location. It's fun to have casual clothes as well as a dressy outfit for your shoot. Here are some tips:

  • Fabrics: Lightweight fabrics like chiffon, satin, organza, and cotton photograph beautifully because they create soft movement.
  • What to Avoid: Avoid neon colors, heavy logos, oversized clothing, or busy patterns. These elements distract from the subject and can reflect unwanted color onto skin tones.
  • Hair and Makeup: Hair and makeup should enhance natural features without looking heavy or overdone. Makeup that is well done is one of the best preparations you can make for your session. It will even out skin tones and help give your photos that extra pop for a model-like look. Makeup should only be slightly heavier than normal. Mascara should be clean and not clumpy. Avoid makeup with an SPF because it tends to create a shine. Summer shine can be controlled by using translucent powder that knocks out shine without adding additional color. Hair style is ultimately YOUR responsibility. Any hair changes during the session should be quick and simple so you have as much camera time as possible.
  • Jewelry: Keep it simple. Big, shiny jewelry can distract from the important subject, you. All that being said, the proper jewelry can really complement your outfit. It’s nice to have a variety to choose from and it doesn’t hurt to bring numerous options with you.
  • Clothing: Wear comfortable clothes and shoes, things you feel confident wearing that fit well: not too baggy or too tight. Please iron clothes and cap and gown for the photos. Group your outfits together on hangers. Make sure items are ironed and ready to go. If you’re self-conscious about your arms, avoid sleeveless or cap-sleeve shirts and tank tops, as they tend to make arms look fuller. Avoid fluorescent colors, logos on your shirts, and overly bright colors. This can make a color cast on your skin that might not be flattering. Bring a variety of colors and mix the level of styles. Some should be dressy, some dressy-casual, and some casual. If you’re comfortable in dresses, bring them! They photograph really well and offer a nice variety from your other casual clothing choices.

Timing is Everything: Season and Time of Day

The best time of year for senior pictures depends on personal style, location, and scheduling needs. The best time of day for senior pictures is when light is soft, even, and flattering.

  • Summer: Summer feels bright and relaxed, thanks to long evenings and golden light. Summer is the most popular season for senior portraits.
  • Fall: Fall senior portraits feature warm tones, layered outfits, and rich color palettes.
  • Winter: Winter senior portraits feel clean, calm, and cinematic.
  • Spring: Spring senior pictures symbolize new beginnings.
  • Golden Hour: Golden hour light reduces harsh shadows, enhances skin tones, and adds depth to backgrounds. Sunset senior pictures are the most popular choice, especially for beach, field, and urban sessions. Sunset sessions also feel relaxed and unhurried.
  • Sunrise: Sunrise senior sessions offer a quieter, more peaceful experience. On the beach, sunrise often brings calm water, pastel skies, and fewer people in the background.

If you love warm tones, dramatic skies, and a relaxed evening vibe, sunset is ideal. If you prefer soft light, minimal crowds, and a peaceful atmosphere, sunrise may be the better option.

Posing and Movement

Posing is one of the biggest concerns seniors have before their session. A successful senior session includes a mix of classic portraits, candid moments, and subtle movement. Some of the strongest senior portraits come from subtle movement. Adjusting hair, shifting weight, or walking naturally brings life and authenticity to images.

  • Posing for Girls: Senior girls often enjoy portraits that include movement and expression. Simple props like flowers, jackets, or books can add personality when used naturally.
  • Posing for Guys: Senior guys typically prefer relaxed, straightforward posing.

Cap and Gown Photos: Creative Ideas

Cap and gown pics are some of my faves because I’m super proud of all the young adults I get to know who are just setting out on their journeys in life. I love capturing the joy, the excitement, and even the nervousness of what lies ahead for all of them. Here are some exciting ideas to do cap and gown pics if you’re looking to steer clear of the boring and lean more toward the creative and artistic.

  1. College T-Shirt with Cap & Gown: This one is a great way to show off your future plans and share the excitement with everyone! Share these pics with Grandma and Grandpa and close family friends as a way of announcing what the future holds. You’ve worked hard to get there, so go ahead and share your success!
  2. Decorated Graduation Cap: Everyone loves to decorate their mortarboard caps in unique ways that reflect their individual tastes and personalities. Whether you’re a musician or a mechanic, your skillset sets you apart, so show it off! Even if your school frowns on letting you walk with a decorated cap, consider purchasing a second one to decorate for photo-op fun. Many high schools don’t allow decorated caps during your actual graduation, but that doesn’t mean you can’t show it off during your senior photo shoot!
  3. Cap Toss: This is the signal for all grads that they have “officially” made it! Hats fly high in the air, rousing cheers ensue, parents get teary-eyed, and flocks of newly-graduated seniors set out on the adventure of a lifetime. Again, some schools frown on the toss now (because of eyes getting poked out and such), but it’s always a hit to re-enact it for senior pictures. We’ll find a nice open area so you can toss your cap as high as you want! Or for a different twist, toss it towards the camera! Of course, my favorite option is always BOTH!
  4. Those Eyes!! Be sure to let the tassel and the graduation year show!
  5. Walk Away: Whether you’re tossing your cap high in the air or tossing a confident glance over your shoulder, the walkaway is a symbolic photo of moving from one stage of life to the next. I love to find a beautiful outdoor venue for this shot so I can capture sunny, blue skies that surround clients as they walk toward the future.
  6. The Details: Whether you want to be silly or serious, capturing the details in your graduation tassel is a great way to share your school colors, your grad year, and all your hard work. Hold it in front of your face and be silly…or look at it pensively as you reflect on your years in high school.
  7. Show Your Personality: Whether you want to be silly or serious, showing off your graduation tassel is a great way to share your school colors, your grad year, and all your hard work. Hold it in front of your face and be silly…or look at it pensively as you reflect on your years in high school.

College Gear and Memorabilia

One thing I really love about my senior portrait sessions is the ability of my clients to personalize your sessions. You get to show off your unique personality and style with your outfit choices, your props you bring and special poses you might want to try. One thing I encourage my seniors to bring to their sessions is their upcoming college gear and memorabilia. This is such an awesome time to not only celebrate where you are headed for the next chapter of your lives, but to also let everyone know your choice of college by including these portraits in your graduation announcement cards! They are such a great addition to your cards and can really make them unique to you! Here are three ways you might incorporate your future college into your senior portrait’s session.

  1. College T-Shirt/Hoodie: College gear is so exciting once you get your acceptance, and wearing your gear is a great way to tell everyone where you will be spending the next four years of your life. Make sure to keep it simple with your collegiate colors with big, bold lettering. Incorporate with something simple like jeans or shorts.
  2. College Banner: Not only are these perfect for the walls in your room, but these are perfect props to bring to your session. We can do some poses with you holding the banner out from you where that is in focus, or we can have it on the ground next to you where you are sitting.
  3. Custom Cookies: I had a senior mom bake custom shaped cookies for her daughter to have at her senior session. It was such a fun way to show off where she would be attending college. She held out the cookie while wearing her college t-shirt.
  4. Props: They’re great! Bring props that help show who you are. Some popular choices are: Sports equipment (soccer ball, basketball, softball bat, etc.), Sports uniforms, Musical instruments, Activity related items (dance, art, school clubs, etc.)

With todays rigid and bland Senior Picture yearbook requirements, many are finding it hard to get excited about their Senior Photo Session. So, let’s dive into all the ways to let your true self shine during your session.

  1. Include Your Pet: If you love your animals like I do, then it is no question… ALWAYS include your bestest furry friend in your Senior Pictures. Including a dog in senior pictures adds personality and emotional connection.
  2. Highlight Your Sport: Some of my fondest high school and college memories were made on the soccer field. There is so much growth that comes from the training and competition that playing sports provides. You should absolutely be proud of how hard you’ve worked and highlight that as such a major point in your life.
  3. Showcase Your Hobbies: Got a super sweet record collection?! What about a special skill or unique activity you participate in?!
  4. Include Family and Friends: They have been, and probably will continue be, your biggest cheerleaders getting you to this monumental time in your life. All we need is a few minutes to get your closest friends and family in for a few shots! They should absolutely be a part of the session that celebrates you!
  5. Feature Your Car: I will always remember my first car and I have a feeling many others might share in that sentiment. There is just something about being young and having the freedom to drive.
  6. Urban Exploration: Although the outdoors is breathtaking and beautiful, there is just something about a city landscape.
  7. Winter Wonderland: If you are a Bend Oregon Highs School Senior or any Central Oregon High School Senior, snow is a guaranteed winter forecast. This makes for some incredibly magical Senior Photos.
  8. Golden Hour Magic: Don’t skip out on Golden Hour for Senior Photos!!! Especially if you’re taking your senior pictures in Bend, Oregon! You don’t get better late summer/early fall sunsets than in Central Oregon.

Practical Tips for a Successful Session

  • Arrival: Arrive early or on time to your appointment. Showing up late means you lose camera time, and we don’t want that.
  • Style: You’re unique and beautiful. Follow our guidelines but be yourself in how you dress. Be fashionable Wear clothing that’s stylish and put a lot of thought into your choices. This is a unique opportunity and we want you to look amazing!
  • Plan on changing quickly: The faster you change, the more time we have to photograph and the more photo choices you’ll have later.
  • Hair: Bring hair spray, clips, pins, and whatever else is needed to keep your hair out of your eyes if it’s windy. Also bring a brush and mirror for quick hair touch-ups. Do not make drastic changes to your hairstyle right before your photo session. This could add unneeded drama to your life.
  • Tanning: Tan lines are a distraction and take away from your photos. We suggest you use a tanning bed and varied swimsuit tops to minimize any existing tan lines. If you choose to tan outside or in a tanning bed, don’t overdo it. We don’t want you looking orange and leathery.
  • Friends & Parents: Friends or parents are welcome and often can be a help. However, if they distract you, it may be best to meet them when the session is over. You’re welcome to have a couple of shots with a boyfriend, best friend, sibling, or parent at no extra charge.
  • Weather: Don’t worry about clouds because they actually even out the light and make for ideal shooting conditions. But falling rain is an issue and we will have to reschedule.
  • Undergarments: Please make sure the colors of your undergarment coordinate well with your outfits and don’t show through your clothing. If you need a strapless, please bring one to your session. Tucking or moving straps will not always work or give the most pleasing look. Check ahead of time to ensure that undergarments don’t leave unpleasing lines underneath your clothing. Dress code is required for yearbook photos.
  • Finger & Toe Nails: If you paint your nails, make sure they’re done well for your session. Chipped nail paint will show and distract from you. Avoid bright colors that will distract from you and may not work with all your outfits.

Don't Forget the Yearbook!

Don’t let some basic “yearbook requirement” extinguish that extraordinary personality of yours. Your Senior Photo Session should be as unique as your are!
