EA Sports College Football 25: Reigniting the Dynasty

The highly anticipated return of the EA Sports College Football franchise has fans buzzing with excitement. While microtransactions and multiplayer modes might be on the radar for some, the heart of the game lies in Dynasty Mode. This mode allows players to build their own college football empire, crafting fantasy worlds where anything is possible. The thrill of building something from the ground up, much like constructing a castle from blocks, is a deeply satisfying experience that the old NCAA Football games captured perfectly. Moving Hawaii to the Pac-12 and winning national championships with a five-star QB named Talladega von Oelhoffen is way more fun.

Choosing Your Dynasty: A World of Options

With 134 teams to choose from, the decision of which program to guide to glory is a significant one. To help navigate this vast landscape, here's a breakdown of teams into different categories, offering a guide to Dynasty Mode enjoyment.

Option 1: The Sentimental Choice - Your Favorite Team

Sometimes, the best place to start is with the team you already love. Whether it's Maryland or any other school close to your heart, leading your favorite team to national prominence can be an incredibly rewarding experience.

Option 2: Power Conference Underdogs - Rise to Greatness

For those seeking a challenge within the established power structure, taking over a non-blue-blood program in a major conference offers a unique opportunity. This path allows for manageable recruiting, exposure to top-tier opponents, and the satisfaction of achieving greatness where it's least expected. Guiding Oklahoma State to a national title is barely a lesser feat than doing it at Tulsa.Teams to consider: Arizona, Arizona State, Arkansas, Baylor, Boston College, BYU, California, Cincinnati, Colorado, Duke, Georgia Tech, Houston, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Iowa State, Kansas, Kansas State, Kentucky, Louisville, Maryland, Michigan State, Minnesota, Mississippi State, Missouri, NC State, North Carolina, Oklahoma State, Pitt, Purdue, Rutgers, SMU, South Carolina, Syracuse, TCU, Tennessee, Texas Tech, UCLA, Utah, West Virginia, Wisconsin.

Option 3: The Group of 5 Hipster Menu - Hidden Gems

This category caters to those who appreciate unique settings, historical significance, or a roster that's not starting from scratch. Enjoy playing on Boise State’s blue turf, EMU’s dystopian gray turf from Stranger Things, Appalachian State’s mountain field surrounded by stunning forest, or UTSA’s now-retro surface at the Alamodome. The goal is to revitalize programs with potential and turn them into consistent winners.Teams to consider: Appalachian State, Arkansas State, Boise State, Colorado State, East Carolina, Eastern Michigan, Fresno State, Georgia Southern, Georgia State, Jacksonville State, James Madison, Marshall, Middle Tennessee, North Texas, Northern Illinois, Ohio, Old Dominion, San Jose State, South Alabama, South Florida, Southern Miss, Toledo, UTSA, Utah State, Western Kentucky, Wyoming.

Option 4: Football Masochism - The Ultimate Challenge

For the truly dedicated, this option presents the ultimate test of coaching ability. These programs come with inherent challenges: limited resources, lack of national attention, and the need for creative strategies to build a winning culture. The satisfaction of turning a perennial loser into a contender is the ultimate reward.Teams to consider: Akron, Ball State, Bowling Green, Buffalo, Central Michigan, Charlotte, FAU, FIU, Kent State, Louisiana, ULM, Louisiana Tech, Miami (Ohio), Nevada, New Mexico, New Mexico State, Sam Houston, Temple, Texas State, Troy, Tulsa, UConn, UMass, UTEP, Western Michigan.

Option 5: Playbook Schools - Offensive Identity

This category focuses on teams with unique offensive identities. Army, Navy, and Air Force will run various versions of the flexbone option in the game. Kennesaw and Coastal will be quite optionish too, I am led to believe. Enjoy running a bunch of RPOs at UCF, sampling coordinator Brennan Marion’s “Go-Go Offense” at UNLV, and deploying the agonizingly slow mesh point between the QB and running back at Wake Forest. These teams offer a chance to master a specific style of play and potentially export it to other programs.Teams to consider: Air Force, Army, Coastal Carolina, Kennesaw State, Navy, UCF, UNLV, Wake Forest.

Option 6: Transplant Candidates - Conference Chaos

This option allows players to reshape the college football landscape by moving teams to different conferences. You could do your own tikkun olam by creating a Big 12 lifeboat for Oregon State and Wazzu. You could undo our entire Dead Letters debut episode and put Tulane back in the SEC, where it was a power in the middle of the 20th century. You could exact payback against the Alabama board of trustees by depositing UAB in the SEC. You could bump Memphis up to the Big 12 now instead of waiting for real life. This offers endless possibilities for creating dream conferences and rivalries.Teams to consider: Hawaii, Memphis, Oregon State, San Diego State, Tulane, UAB, Washington State.

Option 7: Defy Gravity - Restore Former Glory

This category is for those who want to rewrite history and bring back the glory days of programs that have fallen from grace. Want to pretend we live in a world where Miami can still build the best roster in the country? The game will permit that. Want to ignore the systematic breakdown of all of Nebraska’s advantages under Bob Devaney and Tom Osborne? It’s right there for you. Want to make sure a smart-kid school is invested in football at the highest level? Want to deny the shifts in recruiting that have hobbled Virginia Tech? Want to convince yourselves that Mississippi powerbrokers won’t find a way to fuck up Ole Miss? The world is your oyster. This is a chance to rebuild dynasties and prove that anything is possible.Teams to consider: Miami, Nebraska, Northwestern, Ole Miss, Rice, Stanford, Vanderbilt, Virginia, Virginia Tech.

Option 8: Cop Mode - The Powerhouses

For those who simply want to dominate, this category features the traditional powerhouses of college football. These teams have built-in advantages in recruiting, facilities, and prestige, making them ideal for players who want to win championships right away.Teams to consider: Alabama, Auburn, Clemson, Florida, FSU, Georgia, Liberty, LSU, Michigan, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Oregon, Penn State, Texas, Texas A&M, USC, Washington.

New Features and Gameplay Enhancements

EA SPORTS has revealed several exciting features that will enhance the Dynasty Mode experience.

Wear & Tear System

As the hits add up, players wear down with the Wear & Tear System. This adds a new layer of realism to the game, forcing players to manage their roster and make strategic decisions about player usage.

Pre-Snap Recognition

Pre-Snap Recognition makes the decision behind every snap matter more. This feature highlights the importance of player experience and decision-making, making each game feel more strategic and engaging. Do you trust in your high-skill seniors, or take a risk with your untested freshman?

Homefield Advantage

Game-altering homefield advantages rattle your rivals in college football's toughest places to play. The game aims to immerse players in the most iconic settings, stadiums, and traditions of college football, from The Big House to The Swamp, Tuscaloosa to College Station, and everywhere in between.

Pageantry & Traditions

Revel in the storied traditions that electrify college football stadiums every Saturday. This feature captures the unique atmosphere and excitement of college football, making each game feel like a special event.

Dynasty Mode Deep Dive: Coaching Staff and Skill Trees

Coaches will have a substantially more complicated skill tree in CFB25, with 11 possible branches, branches that provide boosts to recruiting, tactics, motivation and more. Developers told us that even over a 30 year coaching career, you won’t be able to max out every single branch. No coach, even Nick Saban, is perfect at everything, so you’ll need to make strategic decisions about what kind of coach you want to be.

That starts with your coaching staff. For the first time in the series, players can now specifically hire offensive and defensive coordinators…individuals who will have their own coaching skill trees. If your head coach is a more recruiting-focused guy, do you hire recruiting-centric assistants to double up on those bonuses (and potentially unlock new boosts)? Or do you hire coordinators whose skillsets compliment that of your head coach? Do you fire a coordinator who might be a poor fit, but is close to some of your biggest recruits?

Those coordinators could also potentially leave to become head coaches in the offseason. Or maybe a current head coach is somebody you could hire to be a coordinator.

Shaping the Conferences: A Commissioner's Dream

For all the cool features in College Football 25, my favorite is the ability to customize conferences in dynasty mode. If you hate the bullshit current day conference configurations like I do, this is your opportunity to play the role of college football commissioner and make things the way you like. Whether that's reverting conferences to a previous iteration, or blowing things up and making Penn State play in Conference USA - it's all up to you!

Every single conference has two divisions, eight conference games, and a conference championship. I know that everyone -including myself- became out on the idea of divisions at some point in the four-team playoff era, but I've changed my tune. Divisions didn't always give us a conference championship between the two best teams, but it did give us some extremely weird shit - I need that in my college football.

Every power five conference -Big Ten, SEC, Big 12, Pac-12, ACC- is back to their rightful number of teams: 12. Some are back to a previous era, while others welcome in some new faces.

Every other conference -American Athletic, Conference USA, Sun Belt, MAC, Mountain West- has 14 teams and some major shakeups. I tried my best to make these moves seem as logical as possible.

A Glimpse at Conference Realignment Possibilities

Here are some potential conference setups to inspire your own:

  • Big Ten: Featuring traditional powerhouses and the addition of Notre Dame.
  • Big 12: A return to its classic form.
  • SEC: Maintaining its traditional rivalries and adding new contenders.
  • Pac-12: The OG Pac-10 is back, joined by Boise State and Utah.
  • ACC: A throwback to the conference's glory days.
  • American Athletic Conference: A reincarnation of the Big East, with added flavor from teams like Army, Houston, and App State.
  • Mountain West: The classic Mountain West you know and love, with some slight differences.
  • MAC: Re-adding Marshall and Temple to a conference.
  • Sun Belt: 13 of the 14 teams come from Alabama, the Carolinas, Louisiana, Virginia, and Florida.
