Navigating the FAFSA Deadline and Financial Aid at NOVA Community College

Securing financial aid is a crucial step in making higher education accessible. This article provides comprehensive guidance on navigating the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) process, understanding financial aid options at Northern Virginia Community College (NOVA), and exploring additional resources to help fund your education.

Understanding the FAFSA and its Importance

The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is a form completed by current and prospective college students in the United States to determine their eligibility for student financial aid. The FAFSA is the gateway to federal student aid, including grants, loans, and work-study programs. Many states and colleges also use FAFSA information to award their own aid.

When applying for admission at www.nvcc.edu, provide your Social Security number (SSN) on the admission application. This ensures your FAFSA will be received and linked to your file.

Key Steps After Submitting Your FAFSA

After submitting your FAFSA, the Department of Education will send you a Student Aid Report (SAR) online. Read the comments on your SAR and verify that your FAFSA was not rejected. Verify if additional information has been requested by frequently checking your To Do Items. Log into myNOVA and click: SIS: Student Information System. Click on the "Action Items & Messages" tile.

NOVA's Financial Aid System: A Detailed Look

NOVA utilizes the Student Information System (SIS) accessible through myNOVA to manage financial aid. It is essential to regularly check your SIS account for updates and action items related to your financial aid application.

How Aid Offers are Determined

You may then review the type(s) and amount(s) of assistance you were offered by logging into myNOVA and clicking SIS: Student Information System. Note that aid offered prior to the term census (which is the last day to drop with a tuition refund for the longest session of the fall, spring, or summer term) is based on anticipated full-time enrollment in courses required for your program.

Enrollment Requirements and Aid Eligibility

Select and enroll in your courses before the term census date (i.e. the last day to drop with a tuition refund for the longest session of the fall, spring, or summer term). Pell Grant eligibility is determined by the credits in which you are enrolled and are attending as of that date. Aid can only be offered for courses that are required for your degree or certificate. Pell Grant maximum of $7,395.

Electronic Disbursements and Tuition Refunds

NOVA has contracted with NelNet to process electronic financial aid disbursements and tuition refunds to students.

External Resources and Events for College-Bound Students

Beyond FAFSA and NOVA's internal system, numerous external resources and events can aid students in their college and financial aid journey.
