Cheryl Hines: From Improvisational Roots to Hollywood Star
Cheryl Ruth Hines, born September 21, 1965, is an American actress, comedian, director, and producer. She is best known for her role as Cheryl David on HBO's Curb Your Enthusiasm. Her career reflects a blend of comedic timing, improvisational skill, and a commitment to using her platform for advocacy.
Early Life and Education
Hines was born in Miami Beach, Florida, to James and Rosemary Hines. Much of her childhood was spent in Tallahassee, where she was involved with the Young Actors Theatre. This early exposure to performing arts ignited her passion for acting.
After graduating from Leon High School in Tallahassee, Hines initially pursued cosmetology school. She later attended the University of Central Florida (UCF), earning a degree in communications in 1990. During her time at UCF, she gained unique performance experience working at Universal Studios Florida Theme Park in Orlando. She recreated Janet Leigh’s iconic shower scene from Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho, performing before a live audience.
Early Career and The Groundlings
In 1994, Hines moved to Los Angeles to pursue her acting career. She worked as a personal assistant to director Rob Reiner, handling errands and organizing events. She also worked as a bartender at the InterContinental hotel. Her coworkers supported her acting aspirations by raising money to fund her first improvisational comedy class at The Groundlings Theatre.
The Groundlings Theatre is an improvisational ensemble that has helped launch the careers of many comic actors. One of her teachers there was Lisa Kudrow. At the Groundlings, Hines honed her skills in improvisation and sketch comedy, skills that would prove invaluable in her breakout role.

Curb Your Enthusiasm is known for its improvisational style, where actors are given a plot outline but improvise their dialogue. Hines's background in improv made her a natural fit for the show. Larry David lauded her comedic instincts and lack of ego, noting her ability to elevate scenes and sacrifice herself for the sake of comedy.
