Chelsea Career and Technical Education High School (Chelsea CTE), formerly Chelsea Vocational High School, stands as a public Career and Technical Education (CTE) high school committed to providing students with rigorous academics integrated with specialized career pathways. Located at 131 Avenue of the Americas in New York, New York, Chelsea CTE offers hands-on training and prepares students for both college and immediate entry into the workforce.

Overview of Chelsea CTE

Chelsea CTE distinguishes itself by offering specialized CTE pathways in Visual Art & Design, Computer Systems & Networking (CISCO), Cybersecurity, and Computer Systems & Telecommunications (AI). These programs expose students to hands-on learning experiences, allowing them to develop practical skills and earn professional certifications.

The curriculum at Chelsea is designed to ensure that all students can pursue their chosen CTE sequence while earning a regular or advanced regents high school diploma. The school's approach involves integrating CTE coursework with traditional academic subjects, providing a well-rounded education.

Academics and Instruction

All students are required to take the same classes as the average high school student, with the exception that the foreign language requirement is only 2 credits (one full year instead of three). The only language offered at Chelsea is Spanish. In the requirements for an Advanced Regents diploma, the foreign language proficiency regent is exempted due to the many hours of their CTE sequences, averaging a full hour every day. The shops (Information technology & Graphic design) are all pre-approved programs by the Department of Education and related industries.

Teachers at Chelsea CTE emphasize reading skills, employing close reading techniques to help students understand meaning and how words fit together. Students also develop their debating and discussion skills by learning specific rules for effective communication.

The school offers six Advanced Placement (college-level) courses, allowing students to earn college credit while still in high school. Advanced math and science courses include algebra II, calculus, chemistry and physics.

Career and College Readiness

All students take a career and college readiness courses from grades 9 through 12. In their junior and senior year, students are dismissed early from school for paid employment and internship opportunities. The school hosts two career and college fairs annually and two career days. It has a fulltime career/college advisor. Most students graduate with test scores high enough to enroll in college without remedial help, and all earn professional certifications that help them find jobs.

Career & Technical Education (CTE) Programs

Chelsea CTE offers three Career & Technical Education (CTE) programs: CISCO Networking, Computer Systems & Telecommunications, and Graphic Design. Each program includes three certification exams for students to earn credentials for job opportunities directly after high school.

CISCO Networking

The Chelsea Technical Academy/Cisco program exposes students to hands-on learning experiences whereby students configure network routers and switches to secure, expand, and optimize data networks in various organizational settings. All students have the opportunity to earn a number of professional certifications that lead to lucrative information technology careers.

Visual Art & Design

The Visual Art & Design program exposes students to hands-on learning experiences in visual art practices, design principles, design of professional publications, photography and retouching, layout media, and the design of multimedia web pages. Students increase their knowledge of visual literacy and design elements, make use of physical and online tools (Adobe Creative Suite of application software), and have opportunities to earn a number of professional certifications. In graphic design, students might study design elements in the work of Harlem Renaissance artist Romare Bearden, or color theory in Kehinde Wiley's work, the artist who did a portrait of Barack Obama.

Internships and Apprenticeships

Students explore careers through apprenticeships at places like Chase Bank, Amazon, the Drawing Center, Magic Box Production, or in their former elementary school. The high school hosts visitors, such as the costume designer from Big Apple Circus, who shared how the costume and circus poster designers had to work together to convey a cohesive message.

Culture and Environment

A group of students and leaders help advise the administrative team about needed changes from a variety of perspectives. Every two weeks students take part in community building circles by grade level. Using the restorative justice model, they focus on repairing harm and building understanding by involving all parties in a fair and respectful process. The majority of the students report that they feel safe in school on the NYC School Survey.

Building and Facilities

Chelsea CTE shares a century old building with NYC iSchool. Although the building does not have a gym, it has a weight room. PSAL sports teams are campus-wide. Students are allowed off campus for lunch (if they keep their grades up), but the neighborhood has few affordable food options.
