CCSD Student Calendar: A Comprehensive Guide
Charleston County School District (CCSD) is dedicated to a transparent and collaborative process in developing its student calendar. This article delves into the key aspects of the CCSD student calendar, including the legal requirements, development process, and important considerations like half days and eLearning days.
Legal Framework
The academic calendar is governed by specific regulations outlined in the SC Code of Law Section 59-1-425. These stipulations ensure that the calendar adheres to state-mandated requirements for instructional time and other essential components of the school year.
Calendar Development Process
In spring 2023, CCSD initiated the academic calendar development process for the 2024-25 school year. Recognizing the importance of community input, a diverse group of 56 members volunteered to serve on the calendar planning committee. This committee comprises a representative cross-section of the CCSD community, including teachers, principals, district-office personnel, and parents. To further ensure community involvement, the committee conducted a survey from June 9 to June 21, 2023, to gather feedback and preferences from stakeholders.
Half Days
The CCSD calendar incorporates provisions for half days, allowing schools to reduce the length of the instructional day to a minimum of three hours. However, the number of half days is limited to a maximum of three days per year. This flexibility allows schools to accommodate specific needs or events while still meeting the required instructional time.
Early Release Days
Early release days are managed in accordance with guidelines provided by the SC Department of Education Memo. This memo outlines the regulations and considerations for implementing early release days, ensuring that they are used effectively and in compliance with state policies.

eLearning Days
Charleston County School District is recognized as an SCDE-approved eLearning district. This designation allows the district to utilize up to five (5) eLearning days. These days are reserved for emergency situations, such as inclement weather or utility interruptions, and are not pre-planned days on the calendar. eLearning days provide a valuable alternative to traditional school days, allowing students to continue their learning remotely during unforeseen circumstances.
