CBCF Scholarships: Reducing Financial Barriers and Empowering Future Leaders
For over three decades, the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation (CBCF), in partnership with CBC Spouses, has been committed to fostering the next generation of leaders by providing scholarships to talented and deserving students. Annually, the CBCF awards more than 300 scholarships to students who demonstrate exceptional leadership abilities through exemplary community service and outstanding academic talent. These scholarships aim to reduce the financial burden of higher education and empower African American or Black students to achieve their academic and professional goals. The scholarship programs support current or upcoming college students across a variety of disciplines, as well as a new need-based scholarship to help reduce the financial barrier to a college degree for low-income students.
Addressing Educational Needs: The CBC Spouses Education Scholarship
Established in 1988 by the spouses of Congressional Black Caucus members, the CBC Spouses Education Scholarship addresses critical educational needs within congressional districts. This initiative was launched in direct response to federal cuts in spending for education programs and scholarships, which disproportionately affected people of color. The scholarship aims to provide financial assistance to academically talented and highly motivated African American or Black scholars, reducing the financial barrier to a college degree for low-income students. The support from the CBC Spouses Education Scholarship allows students to pursue their educational aspirations and contribute to a successful future.
Minimizing Debt for Aspiring Legal Professionals: The CBCF Law Scholarship
The CBCF Law Scholarship, established in 2021, provides financial assistance to students pursuing a law degree. This scholarship award seeks to minimize the debt of higher education that plagues scholars after their completion of the professional degree program, with a goal of increasing the number of highly qualified and competitive law professionals entering the workforce.
Encouraging Scholarly Engagement: The CBCF Essay Contest and Issue Forum
Each year, qualified African-American and Black junior and senior high school students are invited to participate in the Essay Contest and Issue Forum. Students are presented with a topic that embodies some of our communities’ most pressing issues and are asked to write an essay to defend their research, analyses, and opinion. This contest encourages critical thinking, research skills, and articulate expression among young scholars.
Supporting Artistic Pursuits: The Curtis Mayfield Scholarship
Established in 2000 in honor of the late Curtis Mayfield, this scholarship ensures that African American or Black students pursuing a degree in the performing arts receive financial assistance. The Curtis Mayfield Scholarship recognizes and supports the artistic talents of students dedicated to music, theater, dance, and other performing arts disciplines.

Fostering Creativity: The Visual Arts Scholarship
The Visual Arts Scholarship, established in 2006, provides financial assistance to African American or Black students pursuing a degree in the visual arts. This scholarship supports students in fields such as painting, sculpture, photography, and graphic design, enabling them to cultivate their creative talents and contribute to the art world.
Internship Opportunities: Pathways to Professional Development
The Congressional Black Caucus Foundation also offers internship programs to provide students with valuable professional experience. The Summer 2023 Congressional Internship program is offered to rising sophomores, juniors, seniors, and recent graduates who live in or attend a college or university in a Congressional Black Caucus member’s congressional district. Additionally, the Summer 2023 Pathways to the C-Suite Internship program is offered to rising college seniors and recent graduates. These internships provide opportunities for students to gain practical skills, network with professionals, and explore potential career paths.
Application Requirements for CBCF Scholarships
Applicants for CBCF scholarships are typically required to submit the following materials:
- A recent professional photograph suitable for publication. This photograph will be used in reports and biographies both internally and externally.
- A video response discussing their academic interests and/or professional goals and how they will make change in their community with their education.
- A legible copy of their current transcript in a PDF file. The transcript must clearly show the name of the academic institution, student name and information, courses, grades and other information detailed on the transcript (unofficial accepted).
- A resume in a PDF file listing their employment, community service, academic information, extracurricular activities, honors and special skills.
- A recent professional headshot suitable for publication (does not have to be professionally taken).
