Brunswick Community College (BCC) is dedicated to providing accessible, high-quality, student-centered programs and services. These programs are designed to facilitate student success, including certificate, diploma, and associate degree programs, with options for professional licensure. Online programs cater to working individuals or those unable to commute to the college.
Continuing Education and Workforce Development
Brunswick Community College's Continuing Education and Workforce Development division offers educational training for trades. This training enables individuals to secure jobs in high-demand industries. The trades courses are designed for students seeking programs that accelerate the development of employability skills. These courses also lead to national credentials. Students enrolled in workforce development trades courses can experience a series of interconnected educational training programs. These programs can be completed in six months or less.

Trades Courses Offered
Blueprint Reading
This course covers the basic principles of blueprint lines, views, symbols, dimensioning procedures, and notes. Students will also learn how to price various tasks required for new construction, understand and decipher a variety of trade drawings, and apply methods for material ordering and job cost.
Boat Engine Repair
This course covers two- and four-cycle engines used for marine vessel propulsion. Emphasis is placed on design, cooling systems, lubrication systems, and air intake systems.

Building Inspection I
This certification-related course is designed for Building Inspection I code enforcement officials. Course participants will gain a better understanding of the Building Code, Residential Code, and the Accessibility Code of the NC State Building Code. They will also be able to apply the codes in the inspection field.
Building Inspection II
This certification-related course is designed for the education and training of Building Level II code enforcement officials. These officials have the responsibility of inspecting all types of construction up to 60,000 square feet. The course builds upon the information presented in the Building Level I Standard Inspection Course. Upon completion, course participants will have a better understanding of the Building Code, the Residential Code, and the Accessibility Code of the NC State Building Code. They will also be able to apply the Codes in the inspection field.
Carpentry
This course provides instruction related to the core skills used by carpenters in residential and commercial settings. Topics include safety, hand/power tool use, site preparation, measurement and layout, footings and foundations, construction framing, and other related topics.
Advanced Carpentry
This advanced course is designed to build upon skills learned in previous carpentry courses. Safety, measurement, tools and equipment, products and materials, carpentry and framing, exterior finishing, interior finishing, building codes and inspections, and energy efficiency will be taught through a combination of lecture and project-based activities.
Construction Academy
This accelerated 10-week course provides hands-on training, mentorship, and assistance in finding internships and employment. Students will have the opportunity to obtain an OSHA-10 certification and NCCER certification. Thanks to a grant from the Carolina Association of General Contractors, the course is TUITION-FREE and includes a BONUS OF $750 for completing it. Seating is limited.

Basic Construction
Students will be introduced to light construction building trades. Emphasis will be placed on safe work practices, personal protective equipment (PPE), tools, and the proper and safe use of the tools. This course is designed to provide the student with entry-level training to become employed in the light construction industry.
Construction Project Management
This course will prepare individuals with backgrounds in construction to advance to supervisory or management positions. Such positions may include project manager, superintendent, estimator, supervisor, and inspector. Coursework includes safety, planning, scheduling, estimating, blueprint reading, supervision, and building codes. Upon completion of the course, students will be qualified to manage construction projects. This course includes the use of Microsoft Project Management software.
Electrical I Residential
This course prepares students for entry-level light construction and basic residential electrical installations. Topics include static electricity, OHMs law, DC circuits, alternating & direct currents, indicators, transformers, capacitors, electronic, safety, green building practices, blueprint reading, and regulatory NEC requirements for residential facilities. The skills acquired prepares the student for immediate employment in the electrical field. Students will also have the opportunity to obtain a 10-hour OSHA safety card, NCCER, and GreenLee certifications.
Electrical II Commercial
This course covers load calculations, conductor selection calculations, practical lighting applications, hazardous locations, overcurrent protection, distribution equipment, transformers, commercial electrical services, motor calculations, voice, data, & video, and motor controls. This course requires Electrical Tech I as a prerequisite.
Electrical Lineworker
This course prepares individuals to work as lineworkers in the preparation and repair of electrical utility facilities. This is a 10-week, 400-hour course designed to prepare individuals for a good paying and exciting job as an Electrical Lineworker. Upon completion, individuals will possess the necessary skills for employment in the electrical utility industry. During this training, individuals will be given the opportunity to obtain certifications in 3m Safety, Competent Person Trenching, as well as CDL permit prep. Students will have interviews after Graduation. Course content is aligned with learning outcomes defined by the Carolinas Energy Workforce Consortium.

General Contractor Prep
This course will help prepare individuals for the NC Building Contractor’s Licensure Board Certification exam. Class will emphasize codes, cost estimation, blueprint reading, and construction terms. The first class will be oriented to assist you with completing your application to the NC Building Contractors Licensure Board. Books are required.
HVAC I
The purpose of this course is to prepare students to make a successful start toward becoming craftsmen in the HVAC field. The course will familiarize students with mechanical codes. Students will have the opportunity to obtain National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER) pocket card as well as OSHA ten-hour pocket card upon successfully completing required exams. Coursework includes lecture, handouts, and hands-on experience. A book is required, and class is limited to 12 students.
HVAC II
This course is a continuation of Heating and Air Conditioning I and is designed to provide students with advanced skills in the subject matter. The course will venture into a more in-depth study of the Heating and Air Conditioning industry. You will have the opportunity to obtain your CFC Certification. The course will better familiarize the student with mechanical codes. This is a National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER) class. A book is required, and class is limited to 12 students. Pre-registration is required.
Industrial Maintenance Technology I
This course introduces individuals interested in working as industrial maintenance technicians to electrical, mechanical, and processing lines systems used in industrial facilities. Level I covers Industry fundamentals, industrial wiring systems, fundamentals of pneumatics and hydraulics, welding basics, mechanical fundamentals, as well as motor controls, Siemens PLC’s sensors, and robotics. The course includes NC3 Certifications: Festo, Greenlee, & Lincoln, as well as OSHA 10. Students who complete this program and pass the Certified Industry 4.0 Associate will be well-rounded machine technician operators. They will ensure that the system is running at maximum capacity with an understanding of the role of each component and device. Students who pass the Certified Industry 4.0 Technician Applied comprehensive knowledge exam will be skilled technicians who are able to assess and analyze the system as a whole. They can manage, investigate, repair, and troubleshoot 4.0 systems to maximize operation and process control. They will understand how individual components interact with each other to make the whole system run efficiently.
Machine Technology Level I
This course introduces machining operations as they relate to the metalworking industry. Topics include machine shop safety, measuring tools, job planning, lathe operations, drilling techniques, milling operations, surface grinding, and job layout strategies. The instructor also emphasizes machine maintenance, soft skills, and teamwork. Students will have the opportunity to earn third-party credentials through the National Institute of Metalworking Skills NIMS. A book is required.
Plumbing
This course prepares plumbing technicians for entry-level employment. The course focuses on the basic installation, maintenance, and repair of plumbing systems and components. Topics include safe use of tools, implementation of standard practices, and installation/maintenance of piping, fittings, valves, appliances, and fixtures used in plumbing systems. Students have the opportunity to earn OSHA, as well as NCCER Credentials.
Small Engine Repair
This introductory course will explore basic engine operation, ignition systems, fuel systems, compression systems, and small engine maintenance. Students will experience project-based activities, teamwork, and various employer locations.
Solar PV Installer
This course provides instruction on the fundamentals of Solar Photovoltaic systems. Students will learn design criteria, installation, safety issues, and maintenance of photovoltaic systems, construction skills, and applied math skills. Upon completion, students will have the knowledge base for an entry-level position with a dealer/installer Solar Photovoltaic industry. NCCER Certification. Prerequisite Electrical I & II.
Welding I
The purpose of this course is to prepare students to make a successful start toward becoming craftsmen in the welding trade. Students learn to use gases and/or welding processes and to braze and solder metal parts according to diagrams, blueprints, or written specifications. Students will have the opportunity to receive National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER) pocket card as well as OSHA 10-hour pocket card upon successful completion of required exams. A book is required, and class is limited to 12.
Welding Refresher
Brunswick Community College is offering a Welding Refresher course during the Summer. This will be a 100% hands-on class.
Online Programs
BCC offers a variety of online certificate, diploma, and associate degree programs for students, including those related to professional licensure. Online programs make education possible for individuals who are working or unable to commute to the college. BCC provides a variety of online degree, diploma, certificate programs, and support services to help you succeed.
Test Proctor Costs
BCC students taking BCC courses and testing at another location are responsible for finding an acceptable testing site and obtaining approval from their instructor if a proctored exam is required at a non-BCC site.
Additional Supplies Required
Some assignments require students to have a microphone and/or webcam to complete. Most laptops come with these pre-installed, but if your computer does not have them pre-installed, webcams and microphones are available at most office supply stores and others that carry computers and/or computer supplies. A webcam and microphone are required for tests that require the use of Respondus Monitor.
