Broward College North Campus: A Hub of Academic Excellence and Career Opportunities
Broward College, established in 1959 by the Florida Legislature, stands as the third-largest institution within the Florida College System (FCS). With a mission to "Transform students' lives and enrich our diverse community through academic excellence, innovation, and meaningful career opportunities," Broward College caters to over 51,000 students, supported by a dedicated team of more than 3,300 full-time and part-time faculty and staff. The college offers a wide array of academic programs across eight career-related pathways, including specialized certificates, and two and four-year degrees, serving first-time college students, adult learners, and career professionals alike.
The Genesis of Broward College
In 1957, Florida initiated a visionary program to establish a network of two-year colleges, providing Floridians with opportunities to complete undergraduate education or pursue two-year technical programs tailored for the workforce. Just 17 days after his appointment, founding President Joe B. Rushing began assembling his team. On September 6, 1960, the Junior College of Broward County welcomed its inaugural class of 701 students. Classes were held at the former Naval Air Station Junior High, situated on the western edge of what is now the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport. A faculty of 28 and staff of 19 greeted the students on this historic opening day.
Expansion and Innovation
The 1970s marked a period of significant growth and innovation for Broward College. The college introduced its first television-based classes and reached an enrollment of 12,000 students. Broward College received their very first gift from Ralph R. Bailey. Bailey Hall was named in honor of Mr. Bailey, a Hallandale engineer and real estate investor. The hall opened with a dedication gala in 1979; Governor Bob Graham was the guest of honor for the ceremony. This decade also saw the opening of several campuses and centers, including North Campus on February 27, 1972, and the Willis Holcombe Center on October 1, 1973. South Campus began offering classes in August 1977 in a satellite center, with the current campus opening on January 17, 1978.
The North Campus: A Pillar of Broward College
The North Campus, established in 1972, plays a vital role in Broward College's commitment to providing accessible and high-quality education. North Campus opened its doors February 27, 1972. It serves as a key location for students pursuing various academic and career paths.
Recognition and Growth
In 1980, Broward College celebrated its 20th anniversary with the naming and dedication of several halls, including John Payne Hall, Handleman Hall, Ferris Center, Joe B. Rushing Hall, and Meyer Hall. The college also introduced weekend classes and consolidated sports from all campuses into one unified team.

Scholarships and Continued Development
In 1995 Broward College received their first donation from Edward Seese. The Seese donation was given to Broward College to be given as scholarships to students known as the "C Scholarships". The college held its first outdoor graduation ceremony on the Central Campus Library lawn in 1998.
Transition to Broward College
The early years of J. David Armstrong, Jr.'s presidency saw the transformation of Broward Community College into Broward College, with the addition of baccalaureate programs designed to meet specific community needs. Broward's inaugural class of baccalaureate students began their studies in January 2009 at the Judson A. Samuels South Campus and graduated in December 2010.
Academic Support Services
Broward College is committed to student success, offering a range of support services through its Academic Success Centers (ASC). The ASC, located in Building 62 | First Floor at 1000 Coconut Creek Blvd on the North Campus, provides tutoring and resources in a comfortable and collaborative environment. Students can schedule tutoring appointments using the WCOnline appointment system. The ASC is a member of the College Reading and Learning Association (CRLA) and strives to be nationally recognized for its innovative initiatives that address the evolving needs of the college and the community. All of the ASC services are available to currently enrolled Broward College students. Students are encouraged to utilize ASC resources early and often.
