Comprehensive Vision Care at Boston University Eye Associates
The Department of Ophthalmology & Vision Sciences, situated on the campus of Boston Medical Center (BMC) and Boston University Chobanian & Avedisian School of Medicine in Boston's South End, offers a wide array of services. The department is dedicated to providing comprehensive and referral subspecialty care, addressing a full spectrum of ocular diseases. This commitment extends beyond the main campus, reaching into the southern suburbs and neighborhood health centers throughout Boston.
Extensive Patient Care and Surgical Expertise
The department manages a high volume of patients, recording 67,000 patient visits annually. The ophthalmologists perform over 4,800 surgical procedures each year, demonstrating their extensive surgical expertise. The faculty and residents also extend their services to the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Jamaica Plain, further broadening their reach.
Training and Education
A core mission of the Department is the training of the next generation of ophthalmologists. The department is actively involved in training future ophthalmologists. The department trains four residents per year in a three-year training program, in addition to offering subspecialty fellowship training. Medical students are encouraged to participate in elective rotations on our service, providing them with valuable exposure to the field.
Research and Advancement
Advancing the understanding and treatment of eye disease is also core to the mission. The department houses basic scientists working in the Massachusetts Lion’s Eye Research Laboratories, as well as clinician scientists, all dedicated to advancing the field.
State-of-the-Art Facilities
The BMC campus clinics are now combined into a single, new, state-of-the-art facility in the Yawkey building. This consolidation enhances the patient experience and streamlines operations.
