Ben Platt: From Stage to Screen - Education, Career, and Achievements
Benjamin Schiff Platt, born on September 24, 1993, is an accomplished American actor and singer. The son of film and theater producer Marc Platt and philanthropist Julie Platt, Ben Platt began his acting career in musical theater as a child, appearing in productions of The Sound of Music (2006) and The Book of Mormon (2012-2015). He rose to prominence for originating the title role in the Broadway coming-of-age musical Dear Evan Hansen (2015-2017), for which he received critical acclaim and numerous accolades.
Early Life and Education
Ben Platt was born in Los Angeles, California, the fourth of five children. His family is Jewish. His father, Marc Platt, is a well-known producer of films, TV shows, and theater, with credits including "Wicked" and "La La Land". Ben's upbringing was steeped in the performing arts, fostering his early interest and talent. He has two sisters and two brothers, including actor Jonah Platt.
Platt's formal training began at the Adderley School for Performing Arts in Pacific Palisades. There, he acted in plays like Bye Bye Birdie and Into the Woods. Ben Platt, once a student of ADDERLEY for 10 years, is an American actor who recently took home the Tony for “Best Actor in a Musical” for his work in DEAR EVAN HANSEN on Broadway. He attended Harvard-Westlake School in Los Angeles, graduating in 2011. Instructors who worked with him until his 2011 graduation say he was confident, always ahead of the game, a natural leader. Teacher Ted Walch, who directed Platt in several of the actor’s most prominent roles at the school - including an inventive senior-year performance as the title character in “Pippin” - recalls: “Ben was always early, always had done the work between rehearsals that needed to be done, was the first to learn his lines, to learn his music. Yes, he’s wildly talented, but first and foremost he is on top of his game. He knows what it means to be prepared, to do the work you need to do so that your talent can shine through.”
Michele Spears, who codirected Platt in musicals and coached him in a school improv comedy troupe, says: “He was like a sponge. He would listen and focus and learn from watching everybody else.“We all knew this was where he was heading,” she adds, “and we knew that he would get there. He was so determined. He knew at such a young age, this is what I will do, and then was doing everything he could to give himself the tools to get there.”
After high school, he started at Columbia University in New York. However, he left after seven weeks to fulfill his contract with the musical The Book of Mormon.

Early Career and Stage Work
Platt's professional journey began early. At 9 years old, Platt played Winthrop Paroo in The Music Man at the Hollywood Bowl alongside Kristin Chenoweth. At 11, he appeared in a brief national tour of Caroline, or Change, by Jeanine Tesori and Tony Kushner. At 17, he played Jean Valjean in Kidz Theater's production of Les Misérables.
In 2012, Platt was cast as Elder Arnold Cunningham in the Chicago production of The Book of Mormon. The show premiered at the Bank of America Theatre on December 19, 2012, after a week of previews. The production was well received and closed on October 6, 2013. Critics lauded Platt's performance, calling him a "true revelation in this brand new Chicago production…". His role had been played by Josh Gad in the original Broadway cast.
Breakthrough with "Dear Evan Hansen"
In 2014, Ben Platt started working on a new musical called Dear Evan Hansen. He was involved in early readings and workshops. By 2015, the musical, titled Dear Evan Hansen, had begun production in Washington, D.C. at the Arena Stage with Platt originating the title role. In 2016, Platt once again originated the role of Evan Hansen at Second Stage Theatre. Platt and the cast played a month of previews, beginning on March 26, 2016, before premiering on May 1, 2016. In December 2016, Platt originated the title role in Dear Evan Hansen on Broadway at the Music Box Theatre. Critics hailed his work, calling it "historic" and "one of the greatest leading male performances [I've] ever seen in a musical".
The musical explores themes of social anxiety, grief, and the search for belonging in the digital age. Platt's portrayal of the socially awkward and anxious teenager resonated deeply with audiences and critics alike.
For his performance, Platt won numerous awards including the Tony Award for Best Actor in a Leading Role in a Musical. On March 19, 2018, Platt and Hamilton creator Lin-Manuel Miranda released "Found/Tonight", a mashup of the Hamilton song "The Story of Tonight" and the Dear Evan Hansen song "You Will Be Found". Platt donated a portion of the proceeds to support the March for Our Lives anti-gun-violence initiative, and also performed on stage with Miranda at the rally in Washington, D.C., on March 24, 2018. He was 23 years old when he won the Tony, making him the youngest solo winner in that category at the time.

Upon the release of the film's first trailer on May 18, 2021, the casting of Platt as Evan Hansen and the appearance of the film's version of the character received substantial criticism, with viewers commenting that he, at age 27, was too old to play a high schooler. Platt, however, dismissed the response, comparing his age to those of actors who played high school students in the 1978 film Grease.
In June 2022, it was announced that Ben Platt would produce and star in the musical comedy film Theater Camp. He also co-wrote the film.
